I am looking at three machines, CAT 236, 242B and Case 85XT. Use is for lot clearing, pushing over some 4 to 6 inch trees, loading material in dump truck. Looking for a machine in the 2000lb lift capacity and with enough hp to get the job done. I am looking at the three machines above. CAT 242B is low time, less than 500 hours, CAT 236, 1500 hours and CASE 84XT has 1000 hours. Your opinion would be appreciated. I have heard good things about both Case and Cat controls.

We used to have a case 1845c it had almost 4000 hrs and still ran like day one when we first bought it brand new. Only problem we had was a safty relay went out. Other than that we just changed the oil every 250 hours and put diesel in it. Great machine.

Now we have a Cat 246B and its got about 500 hrs on it. Love it to. So far its been a great machine.

I would recommend either brand.

I don't like vertical lift machines (like the 242B) mainly because of the crappy visibility. This isn't a Cat problem, just about every other vertical lift machine has terrible visibility. If I had to buy something in this size range, I'd go with a 248B or a Case 430.

The Case 85XT is a bit of a cobbled together machine that really doesn't work right. The 75 is near bullet proof and I haven't heard anything but praise for the 95 but the 85 just doesn't cut the mustard. A local contractor who had an 85XT drove my older 246B for an hour and traded his 85 2 weeks later for a new 248B like I did. Its not really a Case versus Cat thing in my scenario (85 XT anomolies aside) but the Cat service is better here.

I'm with Scag on the 242, I guess you can learn to live with those loader arms but unless vertical lift is essential I'd stick with the radial if possible.

I have owned an 85XT and it was not my favorite machine. My biggest issue was lack of power. Our requirements are difficult here. Our elevations start at 4500 and go to 10K inside a 90 mile radius. However I have talked to other guys (one who currently owns 18 85XT's loves them. I really liked the size of the machine. I have always been a fan of the controls CASE puts in their machines. The new 400 series has an excellent control system. I currently only buy the high hp turbo machines and they handle our terrain much better. There is a new guy on this site who owns a 445 (new version of the 85XT) and it sound like they like it. The best answer is to demo these machines, DOING WHAT YOU WILL EXPECT OF THEM IF YOU BUY IT, kind of demo. Then see what you think. I also prefer the radial linkage for visibility and simplicity. However they don't dump into the center of tall sided trucks as well.
