what is the best way to spread compost?

I was wondering what is the best way to spread compost on the lawn. I see some spreader companies say their spreader will spread compost and I have also seen the Bannerman walk behind compost spreader. What is the best way that you have found to do this backbreaking task?

Use a hydroseeder and spray it out.

a tractor mounted spreader will also work well.
