I need a new coil for my shindaiwa t270 trimmer since the wire broke off inside it. The price new is $105. I've looked on e-bay and found coils for like chainsaws and stick edgers. The coils have different part numbers but can they be interchanged?

If they could be interchanged, they would not have different part numbers. But if you want to give it a try, what have you got to lose?

I know Echo and I believe most handheld equipment manufacturers have a lifetime warranty on the coils in their engines. Why not check with your dealer first to see?

Help me out here. Are we talking coil as in the spring that retracts the rope starter? Or a coil as in the ignition of the engine? The rope starter on my T270 just recently screwed up. It is about 90% out and won't rewind. Fortunately, the thing runs so well, I can start it after just a couple pulls with only 10% of the rope. When I get some downtime, my desire is to get it repaired. I tried to do it myself, but to tell you the truth, I hate fooling with those things. It took me about five minutes of effort before I realized I was about to make a bad thing worse. Sure hope it doesn't cost $105.:dizzy:

Ignition coil..........
Go ahead and try it, my guess is that the mounting holes for the coils will be different. 105 for an ignition coil is ROBBERY.

I wondered if maybe they are diff. part numbers due to the length of the wire from the coil. Some things need a longer wire and since its all one part it would be a different part number.

As long as you have enough length, you can cut off, or tuck away any excess length.

yes, its the plug wire.

.... you can cut off, or tuck away any excess length.Sorry; I did not finish the thread.
What I meant by this comment is, if you find a coil that has the proper hole pattern, will bolt up, and has the correct "leg" length such that it mates to flywheel, then any excess length of the plug wire is not an issue.

Revisit your dealer and get in his face man. Seriously though, I can get a ignition coil for my 17hp kawi for 55 dollars and it is much much larger than your shindy coil, they are trying to rip you off.

Well, I can tell you that the 2004 list price on that coil was around $85, so I'm sure with the cost of importing them and updated pricing, that the cost could be around $100 (by the time you pay shipping)
Also, from my "where used" list, that coil is used on the following models 300, 300S, 353D, 360, 377, C27, C270, E304D-350Z, E353D-400Z, PB270, T27, T270, T272, T272X, T300
And also.. the cost of something is not determined by the physical size of it.

Yah, maybe you should do the same. The common twin cylinder coil lists for around 40. The common one for the single cylinder 17 lists for around 45.
Dealers dont control list prices
anyone have the shin part number? I can check what current list price is.

Had to have it same day, yadda yadda. Point is why is the ignition coil 1/3rd the price of the machine?

Well, I guess you could switch over to Ryobi or Poulan stuff.. then you'll have a coil that is the whole cost of the machine (ok, that is probably exagerated)
Maybe that is why Shindaiwa has a lifetime warranty on the ignition components for internal failures.

Guess they designed the wire to snap off before the internals fail then
If thats the price then so be it, just seems real high for what it is.

Pictures would still help to get an idea of exactly where it "snapped off"
In the price list I have its 81 and some change.
Kawasaki twin coils are some of the cheapest around. I also think that they seem to fail the most.
A coil for a 5.5HP honda lists for 85-90 I think. We sell the engine for 330. Makes no sense to me. But the newer Hondas that are made in Taiwan. The T1's and UT1's have a coil that lists for like 30. And to top it off the Honda coils do not come with the spark plug cap...that is another 15 dollar item...but the old ones can be reused.

Sounds old.. what year is your price list dated, and is it book form or electronic?

Thanks for the Input so far. I am still looking for a solution now that I have some free time and the season is pretty much over. I think the coils would have to have a different part number if the plug wire was longer. With this being said is there anyway to determine if the insides of the coils are the same? For example would a coil from a t260 perhaps fit the t270. I've been looking on e-bay but I havn't seen much for the 270 yet.

shindaiwas site says there is a limited lifetime warranty on transistor units, ignition coil, excitor coil, pulser coil, and solit and flexible drive shafts, repaired at shindaiwa dealers, you are responsible for the labor.

When did that go into affect? Units sold before may not be covered by that...So if you dont have a proof of purchase you may be SOL on that one.

I have a t270 in storage that I was planning on turning into a power pruner. I'm going to go check it out today to make sure it still starts-as I haven't even seen it in a year. If it's gummed up, I'll sell you the coil out of it for cheap.
