I was just wondering how many of you have a spare trailer tire with you on your travels? I just picked one up yesterday from Fleet Farm, $65, tire and rim. I think it is deffinately worth it, what do you think?

I dont really have the room, and its a dual axel so i can just drive to a tire store, everything is real close by around here.

Just occurred to me this winter that it may be a good idea to have one. I called the local trailer sales place that I bought my trailer from and he let me have a tire and rim for $25. I just keep it in my truck. Good peace of mind.

I have a spare for the 25 ft. trailer. None for the 16 footer. :blob3:

I use tandon trailers, blow one ( and it can get real exciting) and I just limp in to get another. I'm carring so much spare stuff now I don't hardly have room for my stuff.

Most 1/2 ton trucks run a 15" rim, and I think that most trailers run a 15" rim. It wouldn't hurt to run a different size for a short while on your trailer, I don't think they're straight axles.

Actually, right now, we need to get a new spare tire and rim for our 'burb. We had a flat, and we noticed that someone had put 6 lug rim in for a spare! (ours is a 5 lug)[the size was wrong too]

Yep, My spare is an old used car tire. Works great as a spare. I have it mounted in the corner of the trailer.

Dont have a spare, when I catch up with this insano raino I will have time to assess the situation. I think the truck spare may fit the trailer. Otherwise I will flop to a Tire Plus for a relacement.

There are a ton of things to prepare for, this is a far from dull occupation.

I have to have one, because though my main trailer is a tandem axle, it sags right down if a tire goes. I've seen some trailers without one of the wheels before, and these were sitting right up level. These ones had housetrailer axles on them though, so they no doubt had a much heavier suspension.

Always have spare mounted on trailer. Asked for extra wheel and tire when they made my trailer. Also have an extra spare for the truck. Most times you can see a softness when you pick up a nail, and it's easier to go back to garage and change it, instead of fighting with spare mounted under truck. Also pneumatic jack at shop is a lot easier than truck jacks. Had to change one right away on trailer last week - picked up a 1/4" bolt right in middle of tread. How do those things stand up to spear your tires???

that's why you gotta get a tire plug kit. it's the sticky rope stuff.this stuff works GREAT.you can get a big box of 'em and the tool at pep boyz. i've plugged sidewalls with this stuff (took about 4 of 'em) and had no problems.works like a charm on the mower tires also.i usually throw on a good used skin when the threads start to show on the old one.

I used to have big problems with blowing out trailer tires and bending wheels. My last trailer, we must have bent 15 wheels or more and knocked twice that many tires off the bead. I started airing up my tires to 60 psi  No problems since. Well....except nails, screws, bolts, glass, sheet metal, clothes hangers.... :p I try to keep plugs for at least 5 holes.

As for the tires, I started buying new ones. I got tires of paying clowns $35-40 for used ones.

guess i should be at least getting one for the truck. I left it at the car wash about 2 years ago, it was gone when i came back tog et it just 15 minutes later. Thankfully i havent needed it yet. Dont have one for the trailer either tho. If i get one i think its the same size, all i really need is for the same lug nut pattern, maybe i could get one of those mini tire things.
I have a can of fix-a-flat, (but i think i lost the hose for it) as long as its not a blow out that stuff works great (i think)

I had a flat two weeks ago that cost me about three hours of prime mow time to fix. I bought a spare rim and tire this week. Does anyone know where I can find a bracket to mount the spare on my trailer.

Thanks Bill Craig

I got my spare tire backets at my trailer supply store, but I have also seen them at major auto parts stores and at the local "super" stores (Wal-Mart, Meijer, etc.)

I made my spare tire carrier form a piece of unistrut and all thread. and two 5/16 bolts. Cost? about $14.00. That includes a full ten ft stick of unistrut.
As for spares, I carry one. along with a jack and a fourway. But I would really like to get one more spare. A flat is one thing, but a blowout at speed on the front axle, will in a lot of cases, also take out the tire on the rear axle. This is quite messy.
David

I will try and get a pic of my tire carrier.

Most trailers have dexter axles with the 5-lug pattern.

If you have one of these, it is the same bolt pattern as a full size Ford car. (Crown Victoria 1979-2001, Lincoln Town Car 1980-2001, Mercury Grand Marquis 1979-2001, Lincoln Mark VII 1984-1991, Lincoln Mark VIII 1992-1998).

Plenty of these cars in the junkyard, some even have mini-spares which will get you home without taking up too much space.
