I would like to buy an aerator during the fall. What should I look for? Which ones do you like?

Not a mower attachment...a walk behind.

For a walk behind machine.
I would would investigate into a cam type machine. The old drum and chain type are rough on the operator. After a long day behind our Ryan LA IV and V'S , the workers are done in. The Ryan's are tough machine's will last forever and a day,and have a high rate of Square feet per day , less moving parts, but are a major bear to operate. The cam type machine's inflict much less operator fatigue, and all and all are more productive machines.
As our Ryan walk-behinds die, they are being replaced with plugr, cam type aerators.

does anyone know what the price range is of the plugr. I watched the video on there website and it definetly looks like its better spend the money on a plugr instead of a conventional aerator.

As the owner of a plugr and a lesco split drive drum. The plugr is alot better at removing plugs and doesn't beat your body. Also I can push it up in the back of the truck with ramps. It is slower than a drum type aerator. When looking at the plugr get the hydro unit. With out it the plugr sucks on hills.

I agree as well get the hydro. It is true the Plugr is slower, but for the need we have for it, small stamp Chicago lawns, to small for a tow behinds and surburban lawns with fenced back yards, the Plugr is perfect.
Less operator fatigue , the ability to pull good quality plugs, places the Plugr right at the top of the list for walk-behind machines. The PLUGR we have has had no problem pulling out good 2.5 to 3 inch plugs. The Plugr produces a good spacing pattern and the machine lays more plugs per foot than our Ryans

Think I paid around $3000 for my Plugr 800 last spring, the hydro model is another grand or so.

I can tell you what not to get - We got a couple of Bluebird 530's - they leave you (er - by you I mean employees:laugh:) dead beat tired at the end of the day.
As everyone else has suggested - look into the Plugr Hydro - for a wb aerator - I dont think it can be beat.

They now make a new pl1600 which aerates 45" inches wide. Looks like a great machine. I have a pl800 the second best aerator ever used, Ga30 would be the best, but to costly for lawn care work.

I just watched the video on Plugr's website. It looks like a great machine. How is it able to spin right around without tearing up the turf?

here's a pic of the 42" core aerator that goes on one of my 230 Steiners. Does a great job and when you need to turn, simply raise and no tearing of turf.............Lynn

How hard is it to get the Lesco into the back of a pickup? I was hoping to be able to load a classen or lesco split drive in the back of a pickup w/ ramps, but didn't know if it would be possible.

I did not see one word about the Turfco TurnAer aerators. They are the latest in aeration technology. Rolling drum type aerators that you drive and can ride behind. Fast, low maint and very easy on the operator. I am 59 with a bad back and can run one for hours. It is almost fun. You can drop off the ride on sulky and walk with the unit to trim and do tight areas and they come in two sizes. One for 28 inch gates and one for 36 inch gates. The bigger one will do over an acre an hour. I know. See them at Turfco.com or call 800-679-8201

Three point hitch is a better option than tow behind. Let the hydraulics pick up the unit at the end of the row. Back into tight spots, lower and go. I have a Turfco 42" three point hitch and love it.

Are you looking for new or used? I have put an older snapper aerator in the market place earlier this year. It is similar to the plugr style and is cam opperated. Just a thought at about 1/4 the price. good machine and has a Briggs I/C indestructable engine.

The plugr weights in at 276lbs and has no rolling resistance. I am 37 and have no problems. As for the lesco, on my ramp I have a rubber mat so the drum has so traction to grab on too. I can get it up on the back of the truck but it is a struggle. The lesco never gets used anymore on my part. I don't think I ran 2 tanks of gas through it. To big and bulky for me. Good luck on your purchase.

Sounds like the plugr is the way to go.
I use a Ryan with the drum and chain and maintain 1 acre at my cottage and I have to agree.... following the Ryan is alot of work!
It DOES however do an EXCELLENT job except for uneven surfaces as it tends to lean to the left or the right. "too and fro" if you will??

Anyone have any insight to 25inch versus 19? Is the added width outweighed by the loss of manuverability? I can't afford both at this time, but would like to pick up either a 19 or 25 ASAP.
