I want to overseed but do not want to do both procedures. I'm not going to dethatch. Which method will produce better results?

Which process you choose is totally dependent on your lawn. If you just want to thicken up an already healthy lawn, aeration might be better. But if your lawn is really thin and bare, the seeder might do a better job. Without looking at a lawn or knowing more about it like the thatch you mentioned, I dont think any one can answer the question except yourself

Agreed, that would probably be the easiest way to get good results

I'm with you Matt. You should do both if you want a good result.

Soil test a def., can get one for like $8. If your still down to one or the other I would aerate, then over seed. You might not get the same results as if doing both but for not seeing the lawn. Thats the cheapest way to go.

Soil Test for $8, check you local farming store. Many will give you a bag and as long as you bring back a piece of earth in it. Around here they will test it for less than $8, or you can go to HomeCheapo and get one in the gardening section. Im pretty sure you can tell which will be more accurate.
