help!!!

I was mowing on e of my customer's house when i heard a knocking i turned the mower off looked over everything and didn't see or feel if anything was wrong or loose. all of a sudden blade to blade belt popped off,pulley was loose and the spindle feels like it was broken on the inside i could not take my mower to the mechanic cause it was too late and it was closed . does any one have any idea might be wrong.

i have a 48" walk-behind ransomes , it is pretty old

When you say the spindle felt like it is broke. Can you give some more detail? Also was the belt broken or have any chunks missing from it?

do you keep it greased? sounds like the bearing has broken apart.
