Interesting cracked lateral line tee we came across today during a repair call. The inside of the 2" SCH 40 pipe was cracked all the way to the end inside the tee. Probably has been in the ground 30 years and finally gave out.

Pipe weevils.

Looking at the damage, it looks more like it gave in.

Roots around?

Neither weevils (wtg Boots) nor roots around. Very sandy soil in the middle of a soccer field. :)

Looks like it was a small leak and the water cut it over time.

Looks like it was a small leak and the water cut it over time.

I suspect this also. There is a Toro 640 sprinkler within about 10' of this tee (tee supplies the sprinkler) so the initial leak probably went undetected. That combined with the very sandy soil let it go undetected until the final crease/crack allowed large amounts of water to appear.

To show you how things work around here, the soccer field this is on is used by outside groups. The report of the leak went directly "downtown" instead of to the site. Of course, panic sets in when it's the public calling in a problem instead of a site reporting a work order so we jumped on it. Had it fixed and area re-graded in less than an hour.
