Newest kid on the block wondering what's a good time to start in the morning? I figure 9am is ok but does anyone start earlier? If you do, are the (sleeping) neighbors irate?

8:30 or 9:00 is my usual time on the yard.
Started once at 7am and a customer requested I do not arrive before 9 in the future. I was behind from a three day rain and didnt worry about it.

I'm with 65Hoss.
M-F residentials gets 8AM start, I know which of my customers are up at 8.
Commercial doesn't matter but the cities have a contractor start time of 7am. If you make noise before that, you are asking for a ticket.

If the weather report is predicting rain, I'll be on the first jobsite at 0700 but no sooner. If the weather is expected to be clear I'll usually head out the door between 0730 and 0800.

Wow 5:30! What time do you set your alarm for? We used to start at 7:00, now it's 7:30 'cause my partner got tired of me rollin' in at 7:11 or so every day. I'm not a "morning person".

We can work on the industrial (commercial) side of the base anytime day or night. On the housing side, we usually won't go in there anytime but between 7:30 AM and 8:00 PM unless of an emergency. Its not a big deal starting early because in a military community everyones usually up early. Its hard because you can never make anyone happy because there are always the day sleepers that work night shift.
The only time we really get serious complaints from the housing side is when we bring the street sweeper or equipment through after 8 P.M.

I would like to srart early & get done early, but
around here,in the spring, fall, the lawns are soaking wet
until about 10:30.I mean water mist sprays out all over
the place, and the grass clumps up badly and the build up
under the deck is nasty. The only way for me to do a clean
job is to bag it.Then I have a thousand lbs of grass in
the bed.

Cutntrim, I usually get up around 4:45. It's tough, but it helps me get it all done so i can spend time with the family on weekends. A freind of mine got me starting this early. Luckly I have a few commercial jobs that are not around anything.

What can I say, I'm self employed!
My commercial accounts I try to start as early as I can, daylight in some cases, residential I never get there before 8:00-8:30.
I try not to do any residential on Saturday either........strictly commercial.
The few commercials I have I start at 6:30. Some residentials I will start at about 7:15 if I know it's ok with the owner. So far, no complaints.

i usually start at about 9 am. my guys work until 5:00 - 5:30 pm and i go and do more work or some b.s. stuff until about 9 - 10 pm. sometimes when we have to get something done real fast we start at 8 am and work until about 5 pm or whatever it may be. i work 7 days a week in some way shape or form. latest i have ever cut grass was i think about 10 pm in the evening on a friday night. something around that time give or take a half hour. then i went back and collected money from the people. no complaints. now if i work past 9 pm it is only at my yard or inside at my house.

Out the door at 8:45am Mon. thru Fri. Load up equipment, be on the first job no later than 9:10am.
Matt sometimes works on Saturday depending upon the workload.
No work on Sunday though.
Must be nice to start at 9 am! Our crews start at 6:30am, our heavy eqipment guys are on site at at 6:30am checking oil and fuel plus warming up equipment. Quitting time depends on the job. most are in at 5 pm heavy equipment guys are off the machines at 3:30. Of course there are times when we had to turn on the lights. One in particular comes to mind, we had a public golf course that was to open the next day local goverment and the local congress man where to open it. We had 2000 sq ft of pavers to finish so we pulled the trailers up and turned the lights on, worked til midnight on that one:) Told the CG that next time he better have the site ready a few days before or we might not get it open the next time.

Would love to start earlier so our day could end earlier! But with 2 kids, it wouldn't be fair to disrupt their lives and make them get up any earlier than they now are. Even now that school is out, we stick with this same schedule.
Two parents working is rough, but we justify it by telling ourselves that we are fortunate to get 4 months out of year to give them lots of attention. Sorta like getting a maternity leave every year for 4 months

hey just 1 question for all you guys that start before 8:00, how do you manage not making your lawns look like crap from all the dew on the lawn? we start around 10 and the lawns are still wet but nothing close to 8:00a.m. if we started that earlier it would be like we were cutting in the rain without getting wet, not that i don't mind cutting in the rain but i hate double cutting if i don't have to.

Start in the morning - never. Usually around noon or 1:00 pm.

I'll answer for the majority of us that are out before 8:00. When you've got a large enough client list there are bound to be commercial (and some residentials) that are less prone to dampness, and won't clump as bad as some others. We tweak our list so the early lawns fall into that category. Otherwise, there's maintenance or landscaping chores that aren't affected by dew on the lawn.

this morning we started at 5:30. tommorow 7:00. It all depends on where we will be working. I have started as early as 4:00 A.M. We rarely work past 7:00, normally 6:00. Just depends on whether it's commercial residential and location.

4 ? AM ? 4 o'clock comes twice in a day? if I have to get up at 4 to cut lawns I would quit that very day. that is borderline insanity. I can handle some 14 hour days, but I start them at 7 and go to 9. Dave g
