Recoil starter rebuild

Hey all!

I have an older Honda Engine (1996) and the recoil was sluggish. Turns out there was dirt that mixed with the grease in the spring and caused it to recoil slowly. I wanted to fix this problem before fall came, but unfortunatally i created an additional problem for myself! I managed to put the spring back in it's place, however how do the spring and shield get back together? I'm stumped! Has anyone done this before that can lend a hand?

All you do is install the spring in the pulley then set the pulley in the housing then rotate counterclockwise, The hook on the end of the spring will catch on a tab sticking up in the housing.

Now....Some new springs will not have a small enough loop where the hook will catch the tab, In that case you need to bend the loop of the spring smaller to where the little hook is against the center of the pulley where the center hole is. Then it will catch the tab.

Thanks for the input! It wasn't too hard, just had to take some time to think about how the mechanics work... you were right, i needed to turn the spool counter clockwise, i also had to detatch the black handle from the rope to allow for the spring to compress.
