Hey guys, I've recently started drinking Powerade and I really like it. I remember one of you guys mentioning that gatorade or something is not good to drink while mowing, etc.? What was that about and what about powerade? Is a better drink to drink while working? What do you guys drink? Let's talk!

VIBE RAY--in my opinion the sports drinks are important. my routine includes water only untill I feel the need for a pick me up. this is usually about mid afternoon and then I stop for a gator or power aid. I stay away from the blue stuff though! YUCK!

I don't know what's in it but it always tears my tummy up! I haven't drank any Gator or Power Ade this year, Coke and water only.

It works pretty much like this...

Water is BEST!

People will tell you it is bad for you to drink the Sports Drinks because they can alter the electrolyte balance in the body. It is OK to drink Sports Drinks provided you do it in moderation. KEY WORD: MODERATION!

Having said that, I will tell you this. I drink water almost the entire day. Around the half way point and at the end of the day I will have a Sports Drink. If it is excessively hot and I am sweating faster than I am able to drink, I increase the amount of sports drink I consume.

I like the Grape flavors but they are not the fastest absorbed. The clear/translucent drinks are best because the body can break them down faster and get them into your system.

Whatever you do... DRINK!

I hope this was helpful.

Soda is the worst. Stay away from high sugar. I think Powerade is great for you. I drink it after hockey and it makes you feel better I think.

Vibe,

everybody has their own opinion and here is mine:

I have always been involved in sports and hard work and have always drank gatorade to help replenish the electrolytes that your body is using up by sweating. Medical research shows that the body must replenish electrolytes, and with excessive sweating they are lost. Excessive amounts of electrolytes is hard to achieve if you're sweating and merely drinking sports drinks. Concerns should be taken if oral supplements are being taken. Anything you don't sweat out will be excreted through urination and will not harm you, and although water is a form of hydration, it DOES NOT replenish electrolytes lost. I have a 5 gallon cooler for water and a 3 gallon cooler for gatorade and I go through at least 3 gallons of gatorade a day. Just like in Homer's case, if it bothers your stomach don't drink it. But I wouldn't have made it through the heat of last summer if not for my gatorade.

And like Mark said Drink, Drink, Drink.

I have never drank Powerade before. I always drink Gatorade. I hate water, and drink way too many coke when I get home. The only thing about Gatorade is that all my shirts turn white by the end of the day. I guess it is from the salt or something in the gatorade.

For you guys that drink Gatorade, how do you usually buy it? Pre-mixed or in concentrate? If you buy concentrate, do you prefer the powder or the liquid?

I see that Grainger carries both the liquid and powdered concentrate.

Sports drinks are the worst thing you could put in your body. They raise your insulin as fast or faster then candy. This insulin spike will make you tired and lite headed. Their main ingredient is sugar which is fructose. Not only will this insulin spike effect your performance, the sugar not burned by your body will end up stored as fat. Contrary to what most think the american diet is backwards and one should be consuming high protien, low carbohydrates, and moderate fat for constant energy. A good pick me up during the day would be a protien drink and water. If your not pissing clear you are simply not consuming enough water.

Nick,
If this is true why do so many professional atheletes drink the stuff?

I'm a water man too. Gatorade sounds good to me when I'm hot and really thirsty, but if I drink it I only get thirstier and my stomach feels like crap. I tried Powerade once and thought it to be harder to stomach because of the carbonation. The important thing though is to stay hydrated. So again, drink drink drink, just not beer! Russ

Jones,

Do they (really) drink it? Pro football players use cups that say Gatorade and water coolers that have the logo as well, but water is what they are drinking.

If you get thirsty your to late. On hot days pre-hydrate. Drink alot before you start and during.

I agree w/ the water, esp. if you are in a high humidity area like the deep south. If you are working hard, then you should always feel like you have to use the bathroom. And you should see clear. Down here it is "pace and hydration". I always strive for these two. Kevin

Not meaning to get too off topic, but just a quick tip for those that are not already doing this.
Put your water bottle in the freezer the night before. Gives you ICEY cold water most of the day.
Nothing worse then being really thirsty and hot and swigging on WARM water!! uuggh!

I agree!!! Uggghhh!!!! But sometimes when it's warm (like from a hose, mmmmm!), it's easier to drink a whole lot of it, so at least THAT'S good for you!
So far, the only powerade flavors I like are Mountain blast and fruit punch. I get them in either: (3) 64 oz. bottles for $5.00¢ or (4) 24 oz. bottles for $2.50¢. (premixed)

id ont know about the pros but in college and high school drinking sports drinks and any carbanated beverages were forbiden water only the cokes will make your legs tired faster because it increases the lactate cycle which is the stuff that makes your muscles sore. it also makes it harder to breath during heavy activity.

This may be gross, but some of those sports drinks give me the runs. gatorade is ok, but i am a water man until 3 or 4pm and then I'll do one or two. the cheapest concentrate seems to run about a buck a gallon after you mix it with water no matter what volume or size you buy online. Dave g

I swim for the Universtiy of Minnesota Golden Gophers and Powerade sponsors our team. So we get as much of the stuff as we want. During the season there I drink an average of 1/2 to 3/4 gallon per practice, two practices a day. Yep that makes me an addict. I think it replenishes your body, yet has some taste to it. H2O probably does about as good of a job, but the dull taste gets old.

Gatoraid is okay but I'd rather have water or a Mellow Yellow or something but like someone on here said...make sure you do drink SOMETHING!!

As said earlier it's important to hydrate yourself prior to working. A doctor told water is the best thing to drink and it takes up to two hours for it to do its job. So hit the water before the lawns. Sometimes i drink too much water-my water bag bangs around and i have to get off my sulky and walk. I do have a sports drink now and then and it does seem to pick me up. Its been real hummid here and i cant seem to drink enough.

I was just wondering does anyone else use the backback drink bladders like they use in motorcycle raceing i just started useing mine a couple weeks ago. It always seem like i would wan't a drink when i was at the farthest point from the truck, now all i have to do is grab the hose and drink. My fluid intake has about doubled since i started using the pack. I drink both water and gatorade.

Am I the only one that drinks Bud to quench that thirst? Man does that taste good. Stripes look much better in the morning than in the afternoon, but that is the only downside I have found so far. Just kidding. I have a Gear Caddy that has a water cooler holder that I keep full of good ole H2O. I drink water, with a Sports drink with my lunch or snack.

How well do those backpack bladders keep a liquid cold?

BobbyBcuttin

Vibe Ray mine is a 50 oz bladder it's drinkable for about 2 hours but i'm ready for a refill way before it gets hot. Mine only cost 31.00 dollers i think it was a great investment.
