I'm having a problem with the gear box on my 60" deck blowing out. I have a JDf915 with a diesel engine and I have to replace the gear box on the mower. This is the second gear box (@$300!!!) I've replaced since I've had it 11 years (the other was replace only 2-3 years ago. Is there something that can cause them to go bad fast?

Some ideas:
Improper bearing preload on the input shaft, if a nut is used. Improper backlash on the gears, shims are used to adjust backlash. If leaking oil, lack of lubrication. If aftermarket seals were used in the rebuild, wrong type of seal used on output shaft. Most seals are not rated for the high rpm shafts that are under $6.00. We use seals that rated at 2000 rpm and costs about $9.00 from a bearing and seal vendor. Vent plug plugged, will cause oil to be forced out pass seals when hot.
With out examining the parts, it just some ideas. Hope this helps.

I agree with sdwally.
I also run synthetic grease in the deck gearboxs.

Are there good after market gear boxes that I could but on my John Deere f915 60 inch deck? as opposed to paying the $300 to John deere! (on top of that they sent me the wrong one)
