View Full Version : Composting / mulch / plant facility

I was just speaking with somebody who wants to start his own composting / mulch / garden center... He would make the mulch and compost himself, the garden center would be a small nursery pretty much.
What advice do you guys have for such a facility? He owns 150 acres to put this on... not sure how it's zoned though.
sounds like a good idea if he has people that will pay to dump there and 150 acres sounds big enough....but he will need plenty of water too
compost is much more work than just piling stuff up in a pile and waiting....you need to get animal waste as well (dairy, hog, poultry) and dead poultry is good too and maybe some additional urea if needed
he will need a way to turn the piles or windrows if he wants to make a quality finished product...lastly he will need to check temps frequently then have batches checked for nutrient quality and mix batches to final desired consistancy

150 acres sounds like plenty of room. The problem you are going to find is the regulations and equipment cost. In PA you need to have catch basins surrounding your compost pad to catch the run off and reuse it. You should have it under some kind of roof so you can regulate the water and weather. The equipment is not cheap either. The good thing is that you probably have no problem finding people to dump there.
Good Luck- Mike
