Guys,

I live in Maryland and about a year ago in my back yard, I cleared away about half a yards worth of the green ivy that was spreading all over the place.

That was a year ago. I haven't done anything with the bare areas that was cleared nor have a removed the other half of the ivy yet. Here is my problem.

In the area that was cleared, I'm now seeing these tall weeds with black berries hanging from them and they are spreading all over the yard. In addition, I'm seeing a red looking ivy that's now growing in the same areas where my green ivy was growing which is a new occurence. I attached pics. Can you help me to identify please?

Thank you.

Rodney

The black berries are Black Nightshade. Not sure about the red ivy.

The 'red ivy' looks like Parthenocissus quinquefolia - Virginea Creeper also called Woodbine.

How do I get rid of the black night shade and exactly what is it?

Is either poisenous?

Thanks for the responses.

Nightshade roots and seeds are poisonous. Nightshade (Pokeweed) info: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/MV115

Virginia Creeper info: http://www.floridata.com/ref/p/parth_q.cfm

I was reading that a healthy plant could produce 60-80 seeds per berry. Well, I have a TON of them now. Doah!!!

Besides putting on some wool gloves to yank them at the root, is there anything I can spray on them?

Thanks again.

Probably Roundup but it may be to late in the season for you to apply.
