I know that I asked this question last year but I wanted to see if LCO are becoming more relaxed when it comes to drinking a beer, not getting drunk, but simply drinking a beer on the job.

I do enjoy a cold Bud. after a long day in the sun but there is no way I would even have a sip during work hours. Just think about all that money for insurance and what would happen if you were involved in any sort of accident and alcohol was on your breath. Now my own lawn is a different story. LOL

I don't want any when I'm working. Cause once I've had one I ain't worth a damn after that!

No way- hear are my reasons: most of my competitors don't; I work around sharp blades; the weather is finicky in Tallahassee (flash floods, lightning)most of my helpers are not mental giants- beer and intellectual challenges don't mix!

Why would I? Why would anyone for that matter? We're at work. I've never really thought of beer as "refreshing" anyway. When I'm really hot and thirsty beer is definately not my first pick.
On the weekend? Sure! I don't work weekends. :-)

Use to bring beer to the crews on friday afternoons. No more! Not since reading about contractor being held liable for one of his employees hitting someone on the way home from work.

You're kidding right? I would hope no professional contractors would consider doing this. What would you say to a contractor who showed up to your place smelling like booze? Think of your competition, do they do this? What about your reputation? Way too much to risk just to have a couple on the job. What's wrong with water? Oh wait, my mower's operating manual DID say operate while consuming alcoholic beverages, I'm sorry.

We have a owner who boozes it up all day(so I have been told by a few customers) He has a fairly large operation and has been in the biz for over 10 years. Dont know if he still does it or how long he has done it. Just that word got around pretty fast. But he still maintain alot of customers. I have never drink beer or liquor on the job. Man that would be draining. Ice cold water hits the spot just fine.

I have, but it has always been an end of the job situation, sitting around with the customer at the end of the day (keep in mind I'm a lone ranger) and they have offered. Doesn't happen very often, and that's the only situation where I would do it.

Beer on the job? Certainly! What's wrong with that?! Take a good 12 oz., mix 1 tblsp. of dish detergent, and 2 tspns. of tobacco, (chewing tobacco preferably, even though I don't chew,) and mix with 1 qt. water, and put in sprayer. Perfect for mites and all kinds of other foliage damaging insects.

Don't you have to drive from job to job? I don't think it's a good ideal to drink in the first place and defenitely not a good ideal to drink on the job or while driving.

Besides all of the points that the others have already made, what kind of impression are you making on potential customers passing by. I don't know about you, but if I were looking to hire a someone and I saw them standing / sitting around a jobsite drinking beer I think I would pass and go onto the next guy.

On a slightly different tone, I know of a gentleman that used to do lawn care. (and have a few drinks) One day he had the front screen off of his little wonder blower since it was clogging up with leaves. Thought it would be a good idea to try and reach in there when it got jammed. Needless to say, this man now has a 'hook'.

Some of you never cease to amaze me.

How can you ever be a proffesional in this industry and even consider beer in the workplace. I don't care if it is after hours hanging around the shop.

This ain't no company picnic.

Pretend that you are hiring an LCO to cut your property and you happen to see them cracking a beer in your driveway...... What would you think?

never, in fact i make it a point not to park or stop near a package store or bar for that matter. I tell my guys that if I see the trucks at one they are fired.

Go easy guys. Not after cutting a lawn or anything, but after a big landscape job, at the end of the job, I would think it would be okay under certain circumstances.

Now, the house I'm renting is still under construction. When I come home from work and the 3 or 4 guys working on my driveway and sidewalks are about ready to quit for the day I always go out with some beer in my hands and we slug one down.

I don't think hes talking about a keg party after each lawn he mows guys, give him a break.

Well luckily some of my "competition" does - and I'm picking up thier accounts for it. A while back I was managing another small Body Shop and let a guy go for this very thing.

IMHO very unprofessional.

If the customer offers....maybe. Even still, you are exposed to the neighbors eyes too.

I love a cold beer after a long hot day of mowing as much asanyone but drinking on the job and you wont be doing this job long. It's about as unproffesional as you can get. Plus it looks bad when the client see's you drinking a beer then you hoping into your truck and driving to the next job. One they might think your an alcholic, and two they are going to think your a drunk driver. Don't do it!! Wait until the day is over then you can drink all you want.

I agree with Runner lawns love beer! hehe
I would never ever drink on the job its just not worth it. It puts my safety at risk as well as those around me.

I brew my own beer so off hours is when I enjoy that!

The poll is not a joke. I wanted to know if some drink "A" beer on the job and to spark some debate. I even see some of the LCO drinking beer on the job while some of them park their nice new rigs with rolling billboards in tavern parking lot.

No way no how would I let drinking on the job. I had a employee
running a crew last year he thought he was all that and more well one
afternoon I get a call from one of the guys on the cell phone telling me he stopped and got a six pack after lunch and was drinking well I went to the lawn they were at and there he was operating the Z with a beer in his hands and four left in the cooler needless to say he walked home after I fired him right there on the spot. The bad thing was he was a h*ll of a worker.

you know, this might be getting a little off the subject, but why would anyone want to be an alcoholic.I'm 15 and you know, ive done my fair share of stuff, but I never liked alcohol.you know, getting totally wasted just didn't seem fun to me.If i was gonna be an abuser of some sort,i'd much prefer to smoke pot, cause at least it doesn't make you do stupid sh*t...not that I'd want to be a pothead either..but a lot of my friends and other schoolmates that I know do drugs/alcohol.and to me the drunks are the worst, and I hate having to watch out for drunk people, makes me feel like I have to baby sit them, but around a bunch of "stoned" people,i don't feel like they're violent or gonna do stupid crap. Also,IM NOT A POTHEAD,lol, just cause im defending them, doesn't mean I do that.

AndrewLawn,

You have to both at the same time it works better. This way you can get drunk and be mello at the same time. As far as being a baby sitter, let people learn from their mistakes.

My answer is no but what about pot or coke? What about crack? Think I'm joking? I know a few LCO's where this goes on. I own a golf course as well as run a lawn business and we found a gram of coke on the 2nd green just a few weeks ago. I gave it to a deputy sherrif who promptly went out and snorted it.

Andrewlawn, drinking alcohol doesnt make you an alcy. 90% of the people in this world can drink socially without becoming addicted. Alcoholism is a disease and not all people are suceptible to it. Some people have addictive personalities and can become addicted to anything--painpills, chocolate, cigerettes. Moderation in anything is the way to go. Alcoholism brings a change in the blood stream where you have to have a drink to get through the day. You may even have a drink when you get up in the morning and throughout the day. Another definition is binge drinking. Drinking just to get drunk and passing out(weekend bingers). But like I said most people are moderate drinkers and just get relaxed and can quit when they have had enough.

This really brings up a funny story. My football coach in high school played his college ball at Ohio State, under coach Woody Hayes. He graduated in '69, the year after they won the national championship.

Anyway, OSU alumni have been known to fracture a law or two in regard to kickbacks for student athletes. The alumni arrange summer jobs for all of the football players. The best job was the job Archie Griffin had. Archie was an elevator operator for a building in downtown Columbus. Of course, the building had no elevator but that was beside the point. The Heisman Trophy winner must have a job!!

My coach and the rest of the defensive backs worked at the Anheuser-Busch brewery on the north side of the city. They were in charge of the grounds. Mowing and cleaning up. So, they would go out in the morning and fire up the mowers and have at it. Then lunch would roll around. Back into the brewery, grab a sandwich and a 12 pack of ice cold Budweiser. Drink it up and fire the mowers back up. Every day they would do this. The funny thing was, they had to start every morning were they left off at lunch the day before because they kept missing spots and none of the lines were straight!!! Lou Holtz was the coach of the defensive backs. He would come around once a week to see how the work was coming. Coach said he used to just read them the riot act because he felt they were working to slow and goofing off too much!! Nobody had any idea these guys were getting sloshed at work!!

I only use beer as an organic way for controling pest in the lawn or flower beds. Anyone who drinks on the job is a fool.

Im busting a gut here guys. No matter where you are, if your still in your work clothes or in your work truck. I wouldnt touch a beer. Its cool with some but not with others. So solve both of your problems and dont drink anywhere.

After Hours is cool. But never while working, even if the customers offer.
