I was just browsing some trucks today and this one came across the board.
1997 Ford F350 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel
166k Miles on it.
XLT
They want $7900 for it, but i was thinking of offering them $7k cash.
Do you think this is worth it?

sounds like a pretty good deal, what cab style is it. The 350's have the d-60 very heavy duty front axle. Can put a big plow on it.:)

Its just a regular cab, long bed. Im gunna go test drive it on saturday.

My 97 F350 only has 70k on it and its a diesel. But i was unsure if 160k was very high mileage on a diesel.

I have a 95 f350 dually P/S and love it. It has 188,000 on it. I bought it from Wriken. It all comes down to what the maintenance schedule is and if you do it. That truck should go you another 100,000 no problems.

I love the look of the '97s. I was really close to buying a black and red one that was just sweet, but ended up going with my F250 instead. Watch out for the Ford oil pans, they tend to rot out.

One of my friends has a 1997 F-350 2WD Dually Powerstroke with 397,000 miles on it...never touched the engine except for oil changes!

I guess now im not worried about the mileage. But some of my friends today told me to watch out for the tranny cooler, and most important the transmission itself. Im going on saturday to drive it and get the the vin and more info. But any other things to watch out for or look for?

This has nothing to do with Powerstrokes, but I have a '94 F-150 with 268K on it and nothing has been done to the engine.

Watch out for the oil pans, they tend to rot out. Sometimes they can be patched but most of the time they have to be replaced. My buddy has one and he has 208k on it!

Are replacing oil pans expensive. I dont belive this one is rotted out or damaged, but i would like to know the estimated cost of rpleacing one.
Thanks,

Joe

I sold a 1997 F350 7.3 4x4 Crewcab today for $5000 Cash it had 187,000 with a 5 speed and I hated to sell it. but i just didn't need it any more. I have bought a few newer trucks in the last 3 weeks and had to drop a couple out of our fleet.

You would have to pull the whole engine to get at it. I don't know exactly how much, but I would take a stab in the dark around $1500 or so??

I paid 2600 to get my torque converer and Oil pan changed as well as a few other things done. This was at 215K Now the truck has 225 on it and it needs a few things, nothing to bad though. ( Glow plugs, and injectors would be a good start.)

I better check this thing out thoroughly. As far as i know from speaking with the gentleman on the phone it has no problems. But i am going on saturday to the place( Truck wholesalers) to drive it and check it out, get the vin etc. He does have 10 other 97's at the lot i also want to check out.

Is that a 4x4, and is it single or dual rear wheel. As a side business, I buy and resell Ford Powerstroke pickups in the winter months. I have sold 12 in the last 3 years, as well as ones from my fleet due to downsizing my mowing business. Having said all this, here are my comments.
That year truck, if well maintained will run 300,000 miles with no serious engine problems. All the trucks I buy come with between 225,000 and 250,000 miles on them. I use some, and resell some. Many that i have sold now have over 300,000 miles on them, and are still running strong.
Mine F350's are all 2 wheel drive, single rear axle, crewcab, long bed, F350's. I have been selling 97 models for $6000.00. currently selling a 99 model for $6500.00, and a 2001 model for 8500.00.
I don't think that truck is worth what they are asking, unless it is a 4x4. Just my opinion.

I had to replace the oil pan in my 97.

I believe it was right around $1000. Parts and labor.

I have a 95 psd 4x4 with 240,000 miles.... The engine is great, but everything attached to it is the problem. I will never buy a truck of this vintage again. At least if you get the 350 4x4 you get a solid front axle so you don't have alignment issues and tire wear constantly. We call this the thousand dollar truck, because everytime it goes to the shop it cost a thousand dollars or more. What some injectors... Will cost you in the neighborhood of $2400 for a set not installed. Loose a wire harness... another Thousand. Stock transmission.... I have lost 3 in 140,000 miles. Ford wanted $460 for a water pump....you get the picture. When it runs right, it is great...Trouble is that is not often enough. Right now my truck is giving me symptoms of a possible harness problem again. The trans is slipping and boiled over recently. It is done! I also have low oil pressure readings and sometimes none at all which make me think I am loosing the high pressure oil pump. Ok... Buy at your own peril!

Check for blow by. Start it up and pull the oil cap, if there is an excessive amount of smoke coming out then you might have some problems. Powerstrokes are great engines, My 99 has 315000 and still going strong.

A friend of mine has a 97 PSD with only 55k miles on it (bought new and barely used it). THE TRANS! He had it already replaced and had problems with the one he has now. He doesnt plow to much with it either. Were I live we barely get snow. Just make sure when you drive it really pay attention to the trans.
