Unless you guys are planning on doing snow removal, how many actually use a 4x4 truck? I'm trying to decide if I REALLY need a 4x4 or just a 2 wheel drive.

I do landscaping also and actully use 4 wheel drive about 3 times a week.
I can't even imagine not have a 4x4.
You could get away with it most of the time.
Why waste the money on a 4x2, when you will need a 4x4 later.

It's actually nice to have both which we do. On a day to day basis, we use the 4 x 2, but when it comes to landscaping jobs we use the 4 x 4. It's old, but it does it's job.

Don't let anyone tell you different. You will need four wheel drive.

I live in the north east so my opinion is a little biased, but I cannot imagine buying a 2wd truck if it was my only vehicle. We get frequent snow in the winter which is just a PITA if you don't have 4wd. I actually had to use 4wd pulling out of my driveway the other day when I had backed off the crushed base into the mud after all the rain. My truck wouldn't make it out on flat ground, even with about 1K lbs of tongue weight sitting on it.

If you can only have one truck, get the 4wd. if you can afford a second then spring for 2wd possibly.

yea was thinking the same thing anyone else agree with him? im bout to buy a new truck and probably wont go with 4x4 since its only gonna be towing a trailer

When all you other people say for "landscaping jobs" do you mean towing a trailer with equipment? when the back is filled with dirt?

get the 4X4, u will need it one day and be glad you got it. I got a 4X4 but I only got 1 truck, so that solves that fast......

Well besides the obvious(plowing), 4x4 is nice to have when you want to pass someone who is crawling along on a snow-covered 2-lane road:)

anyone else with more point of views? This is the landscaping industry where people love to waste money on what they dont need

Anyone else suggest 4x4 for everyday work and not because of snow? explanations would help

4X4 helps when you wanna have some fun in the mud too. But definatly go with 4X4 you could be on a job and get stuck and then you truck looks whimpy, what guy wants his truck looking whimpy? If you need to use it great then you have it if not then you were playing it safe. I will always drive a 4X4.

I'll give you an example. We have a site where we can dump for free, the owner has given us permission. but it can get very sloppy getting back in there. There is no way in heck we could get in there to dump, without using our 4x4. The 4x4 is needed, otherwise there would have countless times we would have been stuck. I don't care if the 4x4 new, that's not necessary. Having a used 4x4 is just as good, but having one is needed imo.

Nobody has justified using the 4x4... What are the reasons? Not just snow and dumping.. Do you use it for the job? Pulling Shrubs, Trees, etc? Just getting some opinions.

Pulling shrubs, Driving loads out of back yards up a hill in 4 low. come on dude use your head, we all buy 4x4s to compensate for something

I live in NC. and for the most part we do not have snow. For me one truck-- 4X4 all the way. Dump is covered with red clay, easy to get stuck, pulling the trailer off the side of the road can stick the truck, low range is good for moving around a job site. get the money back at resale. Bennies out weigh the cons, BUT if I have a fleet, the mowing trucks are 2X4.

I am honestly trying to remember the last time I used 4x4. Its does come in handy when yanking shrubs; I like to use 4 low.

With manual transmission I like to use low range when backing up with a trailer. Works real good when you leave the front hubs locked out. New vehicles seem to have automatics and CV joints so that elminates that.

Most 2wd trucks are worthless on grass if there is any grade or if you pull to far off the side of the road when its wet. Remember, 2wd is really 1wd unless you have locking rearend or limited slip and then you should just pay for the 4wd. You will tear up the lawn if you do landscaping or mulch where as a 4wd can gently idle across wet grass without damage from spinning. I have used plenty of both and always had several days a year when I regretted buying the 2wd but never the 4wd. Just my opinion though. If you only use it for mowing and on paved roads then go 2wd...

On this lawnsite bigger is better period!!!! If you are doing landscaping then it is different than pulling trailers around on city streets. We do just fine with F150 size trucks without 4x4....because they are cheap andwe are cheap.

I would say that the only real reason to use 4x4 is when driving through customers yards so you don't spin wheels and if you go to the city dump or somthing.....As far as I am concerned a 4x2 will do just fine for my needs.....Although I bought a 4x4 just because!!!:weightlifter: !!

In my opinion a 4x4 isn't really that much more money. Just wondering if it affects the gas mileage that much more. I plan on getting a 4x4 just wanting to see what you guys think.

My first 2 trucks were 2wd. I just bought an f250 and its 4x4. I hope to be plowing snow with it so that was the main reason. Around the dump yard I use, sometimes its required.

For day in day out driving - pulling the trailer - schlepping around town to various jobs - a 4x2 is all you will ever need.

We have a 2001 4x4 and a 2004 4x2 (Ford F-250s) - the guys prefer using the 4x2 on a daily basis - it simply 'drives' easier with the trailer - the 4x4 has a gawd awful turning radius.

For regular work duties - I actually prefer driving the 1992 F-150 4x2.

I have the 4x4 for landscape projects - and for extracurricular activities!

I have 4 wheel but use 2 wheel drive trucks for lawn care. If I think I need a 4 wheel drive I will drive it in and park it on the work site or just keep one close. I only use it about twice a summer. I don't have to drive a four wheel drive but in winter.

Heres the long and short of it If you already have a truck thats not 4x4 and your primarily going to be mowing DONT BUY A 4X4 just to pull lawn trailer. Long.......I f you dont have a truck now and your wanting to be in this for the long haul by all means go ahead and get the 4x4, dosnt make sense if you already have a truck. Very common mistake we see here in FLA. 4X4 are real nice when you get into medium to large landscape jobs.

As the rest have said, 4x4 never now when you'll need it. So better to have it.

How much extra is 4x4?

How much is a tow truck, your time spent waiting?

4x2 will get stuck in damp grass.

You live in NY. Regardless of your intended usage, get it, it will be there WHEN you NEED it MOST!

use it all the time...or did, it seems like now that i have my new BFGoodrich all-terrain i'm only putting it in 4wheel half as much...but in case you were wondering why i use it i hunt and work on a farm so wooded trails and deep mud are common for me

I have been on some grades where if it wasn't for four wheel drive I would have stayed at the bottom of the hill.

Just this past summer had the z stuck in a ditch ... easy out with a tow strap in 4 low.

I don't plow but I do enjoy going out with a tow chain to help people get their cars out of ditches in a bad snowstorm. I will hook up the chain to my truck and have them hook it onto theirs.

More than once I have used it to pull out a stubborn bush or shrub.

Very handy when on logging roads to get a deer.

Don't know it for a fact, but believe resale would be higher 4x4 vs. 4x2.

There have been times where the only things on the roads around here were the four wheel drive vehicles and snowmobiles.

I would not be without one.
