About threee weeks ago I was trimming overgrown bushes, and ran into a bald white faced hornets nest. They were rentless in attacking me,covering my shirt & pants, my helper finally managed to kill the ones that were stinging me. The doctor said I was stung at least 50-60 times, it was a real bad day.

Yuck. I got stung, swatted at my shirt sleeve, thought I killed it, then got stung again and again, 4 times not 40 though! Gotta eliminate them!
a can of WD40 and a propane torch work wonders on flying objects.!!!
----------
<a href="http://communities.msn.com/guidosequipmentpics/">"Guido"</a>
David M. Famiglietti

Heres one that I have used in the past. get whatever you neeed to sit a gallon milk jug as close to the opening as you can, the closet the top of the jug the better, then put about a quart of gas in it and place it there at night. Be very careful not to disturb the nest and be quiet. After placing it about 2 - 4 inches away from the opening, take the lid off of the gas and leave. The fumes from the gas will slowly suffocate the entire nest.
An old timer trick that has worked for me.
Insteed of wd-40 starting fluid works great as does breeak cleaner and they shoot farther too!

Standard procedure on every shrub trimming job:
1.) Take rake and beat the bushes prior to trimming.
2.) 3 gallon sprayer with Dursban to kill any/all harmful insects as needed.
I'm allergic to bee stings, so I always keep a package of Benedril in the truck.
When I read this subject, I figured Guido would offer to hijack a flame thrower for Kevin the next time an Air Force transport came through with Army cargo. :) I was close!

BRL, we have a flame thrower at the shop that shoots about 3 to 4' and 6" around or so, we use for doing emergency asphalt patches on the airfield, if we don't have time to cut it out and use hot mix, etc. BUT I would never lend it out.......thats one of my favorite toys here!!
----------
<a href="http://communities.msn.com/guidosequipmentpics/">"Guido"</a>
David M. We've had good luck with a mixture of plain ol' dishsoap. About 2 tbs.of soap/quart of water. This stuff works great and its cheap. We put it in a squirt bottle to get flying pest, for nest in the ground, we pour out of a bucket, and if you really want to reach out and touch them you can try a toy water cannon.

nobody said this, but to do anything to a wasp nest other than the early morning hours, as close to sunup as possible or at dusk. You want to kill the whole cutbootle, not the few 20 or something. The liquid dishwashing soap, heavly applied with one of those toy cannon squirt guns or rifles work great and not that expensive. Otherwise, gas works great as long as there's nothing around you that won't burn. Got a very important lesson on this when I sprayed a hornet's nest in a dry Euculyptus tree. Do I need to say what happened.
Jean
----------
J-LC Landscaping & Maintenance Gardening
C-27 Ca Contr# 770044

Lit them up tonite!!Put small amounts of gas in baggies, tossed and ran. Half hour later came back with the rag with gas on the end of the stick. Worked well....Eliminated nest..Nest was the size of a basketball

How come Jerry Baker did not think of the water rifle and lemon joy idea?
If a adjustable nozzle can be mounted to a
water toy it just might have some usage as
a real tool.

really good idea to "beat the bushes"!. I've done alot of that in my life but not to see if there were bees in the bush.
back in the seventies, uh...I think it was the seventies. anyway, I was doing nursery work and landscaping for a guy and he had an ECHO hedge trimmer. heavy as hell but the smoke from the muffler went straight into the bush. many times I smoked out wasps and never got stung.
now, I wish my ECHO 1500 blew smoke the same way, but it dosen't.
GEO

dittos on the starting fluid; Odd lots has 'em for 99 cents a can. Shoots a stream about 6 ft. long. Works great when lit.
For Kevin- smoke 'em if ya got 'em is what we say on Park Avenue in our town where all the hot rods cruise- light em up!
One thing I have noticed over the years is similar to the pole trick; When bees or wasps are present, they attack what ever they see endangering the nest- they become possessed & full attack mode- we used to beat the nest with a yellow or other bright colored broomstick. Once they saw it at the nest, you could throw the stick down & WALK away- they would be on the ground stinging the $#%@ out of the stick.
----------
Smitty ô¿ô
