It's time for a backhoe, id like to have it for this winter incase we get any snow. Before i get a salesman on my case, Id like to find out how much it's going to cost me.. No fancy couplers, just a 12ft pusher box. Any input would be appreciated.

Depends on what options you want on it.Standard stick or extend able?,do you want wobble stick or pilot controls?
Another question I have is do you really need the backhoe?,if your just doing plowing then look at a skid steer.A used deere 310SG is gonna run you $45-60,000
You'll be looking at around a grand or 2 per month in payments.

do you have a truck to haul it around?

If it's used with decent hours (no more than 3-4,000), you're going to pay at least $40K. Not sure if you're looking a new or...? New backhoes are in the $90K range, kinda ridiculous.

Mainly snow removal, but i do lot of trenching for my friends electric business now.. Have used a skid alot in the past, just a lil too small for my applications. Id like to go with pilots, im used to my dads Deere 200 Excavator. I really just need a machine that can do a little bit of everything.. Id really like to go new, seeing as i will have it for the next 20 years or more hopefully..

You're going to be talking almost 100K new. What are you going to tow or move it with?
Nobody knows your situation like you, but unless you have a lot of money to kill It doesn't appear to make a lot of sense to buy a new hoe to push snow and dig utilities for one electrical company. I am sure your local Deere salesman will be happy to get you into an SG regardless of what your business plan is.

When it comes to rubber tired hoes its pretty hard to beat Case the 580s and 590s keep going and going.

A new backhoe probably won't last you the next 20 years......pins will get loose, newer equipment isn't built like it used to be so more than likely your going to have issues after 5 years hence why most contractors trade in their hoe around that time period.Your best bet is to search for a backhoe from the 90's say 1990-1995 since your not doing much work with it.
I know of someone local who did the same thing, landscaper who thought excavation is easy money and bought a brand new 310SG,it came back to bite him since the payments on the hoe forced him into bankruptcy now all his equipment is for sale and his credit is ruined.
New equipment isn't always nice to own but can you afford to own it?

I appreciate the concern, i have found a bunch of 04 and 05, in the 50 to 60 k range..I can grab the old mans low bed to move it around if need be. I have been saving up or this puchase for 3 years now really..so im hoping I could beet up the price pretty good, for a cash deal.

Deere builds a very good hoe, but if you plan on going with the 310SG, just step up to the 410G...you will be much happier in terms of power and force.

If you already have a skidsteer, why not just get a pusher box for it and a mini ex for the trenching and save yourself about $40K?
I'm sure you already thought this out, but thought I'd throw it out there.
Cash or credit buys you the same deal unless you cant qualify for credit. Some dealers get a slight percentage off of the interest that is charged to you so actually they may make less on cash deal. Paperwork may be easier for the dealership but it terms of savings generally there isn't any between cash and credit. If nothing else I would rather finiance some and keep the rest in reserve to make payments if the need arises or buy a hoe pac and additional buckets as your doing utilities primarily.

Backhoes seem to be the worst for worn out junk and that worn out junk sells for a big dollar because people with acreage are
hot after it.
My dad has a old 310 Deere 2wd its early 80s its sitting in a area where people can see it. People are always asking is it forsale can we buy it how much do you want for it. The machine is beat dad is keeping it because we still use it time to time. It needs couple thousand dollars in repairs.
I bet dad could sell the machine now for more than what he paid for it 15 years ago.

Wow! What market are you guys talking about? The guy that works for me on fill in just sold his 410 extend-a-hoe yesterday for $29,000 and he thought he got top dollar! His machine is sweet, full cab, no leaks of any kind, greased every day......This market here must be soft 'cause there's hoe's all over the place for sale ( pun intended )! Check the Utah areas for backhoes....wish I would have known, I would have snapped it up and turned it for a few bucks.......try ksl.com under equipment or utah local papers........just a passing thought.

I've spent a lot of time in a Ford 555. They are good hoe's, though they are a bit light.

Just purchased a 310sg in June 06 4wd, cab, quick connect forks and 2yard bucket, ac, pilot controls, fully loaded, also had a hydrolic thumb for installed on backhoe. 94,000.00 JD credit finance package with 10% down for 5 years 1800.00 a mounth. Great machine, can do the work of 4-6 employees, yet is always on time, never complains, turn the key, and here comes the money. Kept our old 310 that has 5000 hours on it. I can honestly say that these machines make a ton of money. Our old 310, (which still works great) has made well over 1 million dollars for us over the 8 years we have owned it. There was not way we could have completed that work without it. Based on that, who cares if it cost 100 or even 200k to purchase. So we got another one. I could honestly pay well over that price and still have no problem affoding it. Sometimes you have to ask, How much is going to cost to do it, and how much it's going to cost not to do it. The answer is simple if you are looking at correctly. Obvioulsy you need to have the work for it, and if your just cutting grass, well, no this is not the right machine.

You may want to take a look at Cat if you have a dealer nearby. We have a 416C thats been a great machine.

Yes, nice machine, Can't get anyone from CAT to call me back. Have tried for years and they don't seem to care about selling a machine. Sounds strange, but we have always buy John Deere, mostly because they call us back. Over the years (since 1965), CAT has missed well over 2 million in equipment sale, simply because they didn't return the phone call. Not sure how they sell any equipment this way.

If your not buying multiple machines at the same time Milton Cat could care less about you.

Well, that seems to be the way they do business. Not sure why, but I look out in my yard and have 6 peices of JD heavy equipment. If that's not multiple machines, I don't know what is. We may not buy them all at once, but we do buy them. Anyway, it's there loss and JD's gain. I don't think it's asking too much out of company to return a phone call. Not sure how they even stay in business.

It's a dealer issue, my Deere dealer out here is just like your local Cat dealer. Never get a call back from them and they don't do so much as lift a finger when the talk of buying a $130K piece from comes around. That specific Deere dealer probably sells no more than 12-15 new pieces every year, they don't have any new machines on the lot. Ever. You'd think they'd love to sell a new piece but I guess not. They're a joke and I got straight to my Cat dealer instead. It's not a brand issue, it's a dealer issue.

yes, probably right, all in the dealership and not so much either CAT or JD. Have experieince with both and both are quality machines. Just looking for a little customer service. Not much, just a little.

I found a 2002 310sg.. I know the contractor, they used it to screan loam and dig the graves over at the cemetary.. machine has 2000 hours on it, still looks like new they stored it in there shop when not in use. It has ac, radio, coupler on the rear ext a hoe. Does not have pilot controls, but i can live without them. They told me to make them an offer. What do you guys think a fair price would be? I was thinking between 45,000 and 50,000

If your cat dealer doesn't call you back, call corporate and complain.
My cat salesman met me at my job sites twice to discuss the purchase. And i was just 19 years old. He said alot of places most likely woudn't og giving me the time of day. But he said everyone has to start some where and i reminded him of xxxxxx who bought his first machine at the same age as i did. Now he has 80 peices of caterpillar iron.

I think you're pretty close on price. I assume it's a 4WD? Used backhoes can really vary in price. If you know that the machine has been taken care of, and with relatively low hours, I'd say anything lower than 45K would be in your favor.

It is a 4x4. Im gonna offer 40g and see where it goes from there.
