I am looking at a 2000 xtended cab Z-71 pickup and it has a 5.3 liter motor.
What do any of you know about this engine

I had a 94 gmc with the 5.7 liter, and it was a good engine

It is a 327 cid. I have never driven one, but I have a neighbor who had one in a 2WD that he used to tow a small Kit race car in an enclosed trailer (about an 8X16 or 8X20). Anyway, he said it did not pull very well. I do not know how much of that was gearing or engine power. I also am not sure which tranny they matched it up with.

I had a 5.3 in my 99 silverado, it was a descent motor and had good power but I never did tow with it so I can not help you with that aspect of it. I only had it for around 60 thousand miles because there were other parts of the truck that I was disappointed in and I got rid of it but I never really had any issue with the motor.

But you are right the 5.7 (350) is a very good well proven motor I wish they would of kept using them.

The 5.3 is a far better engine than the old 5.7 ( 350 ) ......... One drive around the block will prove it.

Drove both. Own a 1996 3/4 ton with the 5.7 is a okay motor. It builds power a higher up in the RPM band about 2500 to 4500 RPMs. The 5.3 is an okay motor, I brought one back from Kansas City to Pierre (600 mile trip) pulling a small trailer the computer figured 22MPG until I turned into the wind then the mileage dropped to 19 to 18 MPG.

The transmission seems to be the weak link on the 03.

My brother has a '98 1500 with the 5.3 ltr, it's a little gutless IMHO.
Last year he wanted to race me in my '92 2500 with a 5.7 ltr. I smashed him. A week later he wanted to race again. He was empty, I had 1,000lbs of fertilizer and a 65 gallon tank in the bed and I still beat him (it was closer).

All one needs to do is to look up the horsepower and torque ratings of a 1997 GM 5.7 liter engine and a 1999 GM 5.3 liter engine. Both have nearly equal torque, with the 5.3 having a slight bit more.... but in horsepower then 5.3 has a large amount more power.

The 5.3 has a igntion coil for each cylinder... multiport fuel injection, not the old throttle body the 5.7 had...... the computer will even allow the engine to run in limp mode without coolant. These engines are smoother and get better milage and should last as long or longer than the older 350 engine did.

The newer GM engines in the trucks are almost the same other than displacement.... 4.8 , 5.3 , and 6.0 are all almost exactly the same engine other than size. I have owned trucks with each of these engines and gutless is not how I would describe them.

Running a 99 gmc with the 5.3, pulling a 6x12 enclosed with 1 ztr, 2 walk behinds, and all the extras inside. Was scared it wouldn't have the guts before i bought it. Am actually surprised that it pulls better, and gets better fuel mileage than my older 5.7. These models had several recalls, so take your vin# to the dealer to make sure they are done. Namely the abs sensors on the front wheels. very happy with the truck.

how much do you plan on towing on a regular basis?

I would look for something with the 6.0. It is a little worse on mileage, but if your pulling the extra power is well worth it. It will break the tires loose at part throttle with over 10,000 behind it.

The 5.3 did not come out until 99 and it is 323 cubic inch.

Thanks for all the replies.
I found a 98 with low miles and a good price so I got it.
Really nice truck!!!!!

I have a 3/4 ton dodge deisel for work and hauling
I will not tow a lot with it, except when my dodge is out of service, mainly bought it for personal use, and after driving it, it will work out fine.

I messed up- my brother has a 305 in his truck. It is gutless, but having seen the specs on the 5.3 - it looks very impressive. I have a 6.0 in my 2005 2500HD and I am very happy with it. I sure don't get 22 mpg. But it is a heavy truck with the super-cab and the 8' bed and HD pkg - I'm lucky if I get 15 mpg highway, around town towing the trailer I get 10 to 11 mpg.
On the 5.3 I stand corrected. Sorry.
