Was wondering about something I saw on TV recently.

For the last month of the football season, FedEx field had an enormous amount of topdressing. I assume this was Bermudagrass overseeded with Rye. That being the case, what was the deal with all of the sand?

Fields here in the South are commonly overseeded, but usually not topdressed as part of the process.

Did they do this to generate warmth for the ryegrass seed? Just curious if anyone knows.

Most professional athletic fields have a sand base of about 12" with and inch or two of a topdress medium for the turf. The benefit of this is that it allows the vacuum system to suck out the water and the fields drain really quick. They need to be constantly watered though because when it is sunny out the fields tend to get hotter than normal. If you would ever look at a cross section of one of the fields it the root establishment can be over a ft long which is what they are trying to accomplish. The same can be said for golf putting greens except these field have a machine that suck the water right out of the field and it actually gets stored cleaned and reused to irrigate.
