Ever done a backyard with playground chips?

Have any of you guys ever done something like this? It is a small backyard with a patio and small walkway leading to a gate. They have two dogs that like to dig anywhere there isn't perfectly lush turf and they don't want to keep the dogs off of it for the time needed to let sod set up let along seed. Also, they like plantings and along the backyard edges they still want to have some plantings in somewhat of a traditional landscape bed since the dogs don't go in there. Also, we would want to keep the two mulches (playground chips and brown blend) seperate so anyone have any ideas for some type of edging that would be good for this? and finally, how deep would you suggest to make it and would you suggest anything to go under neith the mulch?

I had one client this year with dogs that trashed the small shaded back yard. We put down a three inch layer of single shredded bark mulch. It worked out ok. I would use the brown blend mulch over the whole yard. Keep in mind that you will probably have to add mulch more often than in a normal bed. Good luck keeping the dogs from damaging the plants.
