I live in PA but was in NJ the other day at a gas station and was wondering how you guys pump gas if you have to fill up your truck, mowers, and gas tanks all at one stop? Do the attendants fill em all up, crawl over the trailers, etc, or is there an exception for people like us?

you can do everything at once. if you ask they will let you fill it all up yourself unless u go to a jerk off..if not then u would probably have to get all of the tanks out and just fill up the tanks. ( i wouldnt let them pump gas straight into my mowers)

I think NJ's no pumping gas law is ridiculous. My mom grew up in NJ and never knew how to pump gas. A couple of years ago she had to pump her own gas and was clueless, so a guy that was pumping gas had to help her out. I wonder what everybody else's experience is at NJ gas stations with their equipment.

I tell you what i like not having to get out of my truck when i go fuel up! When i drove to texas it sucked getting fuel. When its 1230am and your at some gas station in waco texas and you see some guys dealing crack in the parking lot, you really do not want to get out of your truck to pump!

I hope they never get rid of that law in nj!!!

Its that way in Oregon too. When I go down there its fun to jump out real quick and start pumping your own... You should see them freak out. People waving their arms yelling. You'd think you had just robbed a bank. Then they see the out of state plates and they calm down a bit.

Well it is a stupid law that cost me a TON of time and money, while everyone and their brother waited in 2 lines aside a 4-line Turnpike fueling station.

Leaving the engine running the entire time which in turn contaminates and further contributes to global warming and burns even MORE petrol which drives the price higher isn't really much safer than turning it off when pumping, not to mention it took close to twice as long as it should've.

Waiting in line for what must've been 15-20 minutes didn't help alleviate matters much, especially not after having just got through the New York rush hour 3-state long TRAFFICJAM and considering there were several more pumps that could've been delivering fuel but either due to an employee shortage or some other lack of foresight, were not.

I didn't say much at the time because I figured it was a Turnpike thing, didn't realize it was a law covered the entire state LOL but even then, I'm smart enough to realize it wasn't anyone's fault there. And I'm not dogging anyone here, but it is a STUPID law and I just have to let it out.

It did make me feel like I was being punished, you know, this is what you get for driving on OUR roads (lol)...
And I felt sorry for NJ residents having to put up with this.
Felt like something right out of that Soylent Green movie.

Some mass Ben Dover crap that's done for no other reason than keep you DOWN, let you know once and for all who is really in charge.
That, or the government wants to provide a service for us that we should feel grateful for (but somehow we miss the point).
btw, y'all didn't vote on this, did you?
Just nuts.

That's why I fill up before I head to the beach!! I also don't like other guys sticking nozzles in my truck!! :nono:

I'm gonna have to practice doing all the pumping operations here in PA fast enough so that when I have to go to NJ again, I'll have mastered getting out, opening the gas door, sticking the credit card in, selecting the grade, and depressing the lever so fast that they wouldn't know I was there. :dizzy:

Or I could just say that I'm deaf and pretend that I don't know what the heck's going on. (which is half true). I'll have to avoid going there early in the morning or late at night as well so I'm not the only vehicle in there...

I've got a ignorant question... I didnt know you guys had laws like that, but does the cost offset the aggravation?? What do you guys pay for gas?? I live in Cortland County, NY, We have the highest gas prices in NY state. I think for the prices we are paying, we should be getting our gas pumped or free car washes or something!!

LONEMAN

You don't even pay extra to have it pumped for you in NJ. I was even told it is not necessary to give tips to attendants. When I pump my gas, I just want to get out and go rather than waiting for an attendant to come start the pump and then wait for the attendant to collect the money. And it's always longer when the bays are full. Much longer! Did I mention that I also don't like them touching my truck?!!

That's so true Allen's. I was camping on the Oregon coast last summer. Pulled into a station and started pumping and the guy there came yelling and screaming at me (cussing too I might add) right in front of my wife and kids no less.
I got the guy calmed down by explaining I was from WA and didn't know thier law. So while he was filling the tank I got two other people getting gas and heard the whole thing to sign a quick statement as to what they saw. When I went in to pay I asked to see the manager and gave him a piece of my mind. When it was all said and done, I walked out of there with a free tank of gas, a $25 gas card, and some goodies for the kids. That sure calmed me down :)
Anyway, as I was talking to the guy I asked what the deal was about having to have the gas pumped for you. He told me that because the fumes could cause cancer and the state of Oregon wanted to lessen the risk to the public. Of coarse then I asked him what about the poor kid that has to pump the gas and breath the fumes all day. He said that was a ocupational hazzard and any effects would be covered by OSHA (or somthing agency like that) in the long run. He never really had it all figured out himself he said.
I have no idea what's true but that's my story :)

While the law up there doesn't really make sense to me.... the thing that really has me scratching my head is how all these Q-tips make it all the way down here without figuring out how to pump their own gas:confused:

Anytime I go to the stations around here I get out and pump my own gas, the guy comes over to BS for a min. swip his card and mine, I like pumping my own gas, plus when I have my mowers and cans they rather I pump it so they can help other customers and I usually do it anyway so its no biggie...I wish theyd change the law in NJ to self serv....full service is a waste...found gas in NJ today for $1.96

what really sucks is going to PA or NY & paying a lot more for gas & on top of it you have to pump it your self.
if you live in NJ you learn which stations have the best service. I never wait more than a few minutes.

1.99 in Rahway today on Lake Ave

I hate having my gas pumped. Usually I just pump it myself and get yelled at. I just don't care...You have to wait for the guy to come over, then wait for him to get their when the pump stops, blah blah blah.

I just don't get it. We can't pump our own gas but I can dispense 20 gallons of gas into the three mowers in the trailer???

Here in Mass, the attendents used to pump it for you. Then, some politician must have decided it was a good idea to spread around the benzene fumes so instead of killing a few attendents really quickly, we could kill the whole population slowly.

That said, I don't want anybody touching my motorcycle and spilling it all over. The trucks I don't care about.
We still have some stations where they pump it for you but they're few and far between.

Tell me, do the attendents in NJ talk on their cell phones while they're pumping it for you??

That poor guy actually thinks osha will do something for him when he's curled up in a ball foaming at the mouth?

That's pretty cool. It's ususally about 30 cents more expensive here in PA. So tell me, do you get away with it every time when you pump your own gas?

I've always pumped it my self in the mower. Gas cans are usually filed by myself but the attendant always fuels up the truck.

Allure has it right, you kind of know where the good service stations are. I ask who wants to pump gas when it is twenty degrees outside with 25 mile per hour snow driving winds.

That's when you start the nozzle and jump back into the truck  When the DC snipers were still lurking that's what everyone did...pump n' duck in da truck

Isn't the issue, I would think, that a whole lot of 'petrol technicians' would suddenly be unemployed if self-serve were allowed???

So what's the reason for the law that you are not supposed to pump your own? Safety? Security? More minimum wage jobs?

Stay away from my truck ... I'll be the one to spill the diesel down the side of it if it gets done!
