I made mine too about 3 or 4 years ago. Here is a picture of it and the instructions to build it are on my website on the Gate Lift Page.

All you need is a spring & a couple U-bolts to hold it. Couldn't be simpler.

Calvin, show us the simple version, I'd like to see it.

Eric,
Don't have a digital cam yet but when I get one LOOK OUT.
Simple version: Attach the spring with one U bolt through mesh & side bar on one side of gate-attach other U-bolt to top rail of trailer using a block of wood to hold it-adjust length-tighten bolts. SIMPLE. But you have to have a top rail on your trailer. It would work fine on yours. Had mine like this for years with no problems & easy lift. Would also work fine on that trailer with the $170 lifter.

I incolsed all of mine in pvc so if it does snap it will be in the pvc pipe

That's a heavy duty garage door spring it won't snap pulling up a trailer gate.

Mine looks just like the EZGate, but it's alot heavier duty. I got about 20 bucks into it, and can lift the gate with one finger. I choose not to though, like I said before, I just lift up with my toe and it comes right to me.:D

that thing looks like too much stuff to put on. I have one spring and it is on the rod that connects the gate to the trailer. No springs or bars to get caught on. plus I can lift the gate with 3 fingers. Its a one piece gate 5 ft tall. I'll get a pic of it tomorrow and put it back on this thread.

One factor would be the poundage of the spring. Mine is about an 80# spring I think. Also, it depends on where the cable is hooked to the gate. The further toward the bottom of the gate (when it's down) top of the gate when it's up, the more leverage it's going to have to pull the gate up. This is also not to mention the further it will spread the spring.

Put a safety cable on that sucker. Garage door spring went thru the window of my garage tue night when the spring snapped. And they will all snap eventually.
