View Full Version : what do you think about this?

A local storage facility is getting ready to open, and they are filling up their units. We are thinking of relocating our equipment and moving into one as they are bigger. There are 13 units, and these are just for contractors. As the man said on the phone, these units aren't for storing sofas. He said that there will be a large billboard that will list all 13 contractors names along with their phone numbers. He said that is included in the price.
Now maybe this is me overthinking things, but do you think that is a good idea to let everyone know who is going to be storing stuff in there? He makes it sound like it's a "little advertising bonus", but the way I see it, that's just letting everyone know who is storing stuff there, and giving any riff raff a general idea what could be in the units.
What do you think?

Part of the attractiveness of the storage place I'm at is that no one knows I store stuff there. There's no sign on the door, etc. I would want a more anonymous set up.
Other than that, I highly recommend the storage facility experience. The one I'm in is a mix of business and residential people. There is a lot of different types of businesses in there as well. I just expanded to a 30 by 30 space, for $3 less than my old 20 by 30 space. I've got so much room I don't know what to do with myself.
Yep you get free advertising with your storage, but that means you will need to get all new equipment as well. I wonder how many contractors will go for that. Sounds like a no win for the contractors.

I agree with everyone here. I grew up in a rough neighborhood and knew a few guys that sold "used" equipment around town. I don't want to be the guy who used it. I certainly don't buy it, buy it sure did sell to someone.

How is this any different than som eof the larger operations that have an equipment yard, and every evening after 6PM, there are 3-4 trucks and trailers locked up in the yard.
If there is security, cameras and access codes, and both you and the storage facility owner have insurance, then you have to judge it as do you want that exposure.
By doing what we do, everyone knows what we have. We have to keep it somewhere and I say that it would be just as safe in the storage facility (as long as it is in a safe area of town) as it would be parked in your own driveway.
So what is there is a sign of the companies that rent spaces in there. If no-one puts a sign on the door, then who is to know which company is in which bay....
Just my thoughts, I do not see it as all bad, there is risk eitherway...

I totally agree. So long as the place is fenced & protected by a security sysytem the risk should not be to great. That's assuming there is no sign on the individual units.
If it concerns you that much, why not ask to be left off of the sign. you might pay the same rate, but you will have more peace of mind.

I don't see the big deal, although if you want, certainly request that your name not be included on the sign. Anyone that steals out of a gated, security-camera outfitted facility is probably savvy enough to know who's in there whether or not the place has signs. Those are the type of criminals you have good insurance to protect yourself against anyway.

I don't think that the individual units would be marked...just a sign at the front, so you would know who all is in there, but wouldn't know where everything is. The only ones that would know would be the other tenants. This may be a relatively economic way of doing this (depending on cost) compared to renting a commercial garage area. Of course, you probably don't have power to run anything, and they probably will not allow any servicing or anything to go on there.

I am picturing a chain link fence with a security code, a lighted property, a locked unit, a bunch of cameras, and a security system. How many people store their equipment on a enclosed trailer in front of their house? That is a crowbar away from being open by anyone.I wouldnt really count on getting anything stolen.
