We did between 50-60 last season.
Are you trying to determine if owning a machine is worth the money? How many do you do?

Ryan Aerator & a pull-behind on the Z (can't remember the brand, but not a homeowner one).

I dont do any yet, I am working on starting this year. I was trying to determine if owning the equipment was worth it, as well, if people were doing a lot of them.
My plan was to lead with an aeration campaign to start off the year along with spring clean-ups and the go into the mow season.
Any other ideas for leading off the year, promotions that work, etc? Thanks!

We had a goal of $10000. last season. We did $10500. Approximately 80% of this aeration was done with our tractor.

I typically do 1 in the fall, and sometimes 1 in the spring, (if it's been dry).
A question: Is anyone aware of an aerator brand that allow for 4" plugs? The brands I have used normally only allow for 2", but I have a potential client that says the company that normally aerates her lawn leaves 4" plugs. Any thoughts? Thanks

The tractor mounted aerators will pull 4.5" plugs if you max out the weight trays under ideal conditions.

If I recall correctly, the walk behind aerators (Bluebird I believe) allowed for a 4" core. I can't remember ever seeing a tow behind that would give you a (real) aeration with 4" cores.
We don't do a lot of aerating any longer, so we'll rent one for a few days if we get the calls for it. I really don't push them all that hard, but the one's we rent are always walk behinds because we want that depth.
But to stay on track, we did 12 last year and will probably do less this year (if any).

We do 150 to 400/year. We have the Plugr PL600 and a Bluebird. The Plugr is much easier to use, but the tines wear out quickly and cost quite a bit. When you have new tines and moist soil the Plugr will pull monster plugs, as they expand many will exceed 4".

None for lawns, because I don't care for lawns.
But I'm started-in on aerating for trees - vertical mulching - with a small auger and a 1/2" drill. When the root system allows. If trees are too big, sometimes there's too much root mass to get through.
Same basic concept, just giant size holes.

Did about 20 last year and like always its the best money I make all year. Do not go out and buy one until you get a good client base. They are expensive and alot of cheapazzes dont want to pay for what its worth. I love aerating...good money and I enjoy watching my yards come back better every spring. Wish I had time to do about 10x as many as I am but just cant swing it during school.

I believe my Plugr is leaving pretty close to a 4" plug. I could be completely wrong in saying this, but I do feel positive when remembering back to last year that they plugs were rather large.

LawnTamer,
How do you get those aeration customers? Are they from your existing customer base or are a lot of them just getting aerations?
What other services do you offer? Have you ever used the aerator that goes on a Walker mower?
mdvaden,
Could you expand on this: "aerating for trees - vertical mulching - with a small auger and a 1/2" drill."
Thanks you too!

He i was looking at a walker aerator today also. They looks sweet. On the plugr web site it says that walker used plugr design as far as their cam drive design and everything just on a bigger scale. Intersting wondering if anyone else has used one that is driven on the walker not the pull behind kind. How did it work?
