TORO PROLINE 15hp Problem

I tried for a few days on the Mechanic forum with 21 views and no responses. Anyone had similar problems?


TORO PROLINE 15hp Problem
I was out mowing my first job with my Toro Proline 15 HP Kohler w/Hydro and 44" deck and after 15 minutes I had a bad smell walking with me. 5 minutes later I had smoke coming out from under her. I packed her up and used another mower for the day.
I deduced that it is at one of two places. The electric clutch or at the hydro drive bearing. Am I correct or do you have any other advise.
The belts all look good and I only have about 150 hours on it. I have been running double blades for the last 4 months with no problems.
I haven't had a chance to tear it down yet.

Any help?

I lost my clutch last summer. No smell at all. I have had hydro units burn out on other equip.,no smells there. It almost has to be a belt. Maybe the belts are good, but a spindle could be binding up and causing it to burn rubber.The smoke is another clue. There could possibly be an electrical problem causing wires to burn. But if that were the case, I suppose the fuse would have blown. Check those spindles by hand to see if they move freely.

Its the top plate of the electric clutch. The field assembly became unattatched from its tack welds and burnt the wires off. New part=81 bucks. Now I have to find a press to get the thing off the bearing and the new one on.
A new clutch assembly is about 215 or so.

Check your idler pulleys. When they go, they heat up...way up... in smoke. They often contain a plastic spacer inside which would smoke when heated, as well as a rubber seal. I had one go a long time ago on my JD and it looked like the Blue Angles streaking across the lawn!!! Other than maybe a pinecone or other debris rubbing against the belt, I am out of answers.
