I got a 2001 27 lc kawi lazer. How she running for you? I got just over 1600 hours on mine with the ultra vac. She still purs like a kitten. Just droped $1000 on a new hyrdro pump and tires. ouch. But the engine is still strong and leaves a very nice cut.
I have to say with the limited use on my new 31hp xs (06 leftover), the new mower blows the 27 kawi away, The lazers keep getting better and better.
Mine is also a 2001 it has 1900 hours on it, and still runs great. I am re-painting it right now. Some new stickers and she will be ready for another 2000 hours. I really like the laser.

you only have 1600 hours on a 2001 mower? I would hope its still running good. You should be able to get atleast 3000 hrs out of it. I have a 2001 Dixie Chopper and just replaced the engine at the end of last season and it had over 4000 hrs on it. I actually just replaced one of the pumps today, but it was only $400. Its like a bran new mower now.

and before i do let me appologize in advance - but - did you save up all the money you made pushing a craftsman 21" around those estates to buy that Gator and Exmark and trailer and racks and all that hand held gear - or did you float a loan at the local bank - or what - i'm pretty sure it's or what - i'm sorry - it's great your 16 and driving your brand new gator around your neihborhood and working - thats great - it really is - but i drive a truck thats 4 years older than you and use a mower that i got in 94 (yes you were three when i bought it) - and i am sorry but showing ME all that gear kinda rubs me the wrong way - i am glad your working - i am sure you will do well - you have a great start - and you will undoubtedly be able to pay for your gear cutting in that hood - i'm just old i guess and a little grumpy - nice stuff - but mines all old and used and scraped up - rusted a little too - especially the truck - it's all serviceable and in good mechanical condition but i don't think i'll show you mine -
hay daddy i did'nt read your whole post but i will tell you 21's make the most money out of all the omwers.. its all derivatives man. (the rate of change) 3 throw aways vs 2 commercial walks:laugh:

The Turf tiger is brand new picked it up used it twice and then it snowed:realmad:. The Tiger Cub is almost 2 years old and is our work horse. The 36" in front is about a year old but we don't use it a whole lot, only when we need to get through a gate, it was bought as a leftover cheap. The 52" hydro is 6 months old, bought as a leftover at cost. We had an older 36" walk behind but sold it to a friend who was starting his business. We have been landscaping on the side for 10 years and just started full time last year. Thats when I really started to buy equipment. Before this I was a full time Commercial /Residential HVAC service tech, so $ was good, plus I'm a single guy no kids.
I opted to spend the extra $ and buy the ODB self contained leaf vac trailer rather than make some ugly plywood box on my F550. Plus multiple trucks can pull it without modifying the trucks.

Walker is working GREAT. I LOVE IT! If things go right, there will be a 23hp MTGHS with high dump in the place of the Dixon before fall cleanups:). I got the trailer on Sept. 18th, paid $2129.91 with tax. Sadly, the paperwork from that is STILL on my desk right here...

The leaf vac trailer cost me $14,000, but they sell for $15,500. The time savings is unbelievable, this thing picks leaves up so fast three guys have to hustle to feed it. It shreds the leaves into little pieces and fills the container to the top. We easily stuff 15+ yards worth into that machine quick. 27 hp kawasaki engine with a belt drive impeller.
BulldogPS
03-08-2008, 12:34 AM
The reason the mowers look so new and clean is that they are pulled off the trailer and washed after each use. Also the equipment was new at the time of these photos, but we use enclosed trailers and a lot of straps so none of our stuff moves in the trailer, that helps keep them nice. But washing them is most important.

bulldog is the tiger a liquid cooled engine?
how do you like the mower, i know they burn 3 gallons an hour, do you like that engine or is it just to thirsty? how does the bagger work, any problems with it clumping or getting clogged?
im looking to buy one just like it from a guy so any info will help. and if you dont mind saying what did you pay for it?

The Turf Tiger is a liquid cooled 35 hp vanguard V-twin. It does eat a little bit of fuel but we need the extra power to run the bagger when the grass is wet. I was going to get the Kubota diesel or wait for the new Turf Tigers with the CAT diesel engines, but Scag recommended the Vangurd for our usage. They said the Diesels won't have the power we need to run the bagger, and the 29 hp DFI Kawasaki was barely enough when we demoed the machine. It leaves a beautifull cut and the bagger works terrific, never clogs or clumps. Engine doesn't even really drop much RPM even when engaging the blades. Lots more power than our Tiger Cub. The speed at which you can cut tall wet grass, makes up for how much fuel you use.

Myself and my partner work 7 days a week sunup to sundown (or later). My brother-in-law works for me full time 5 days a week, more if needed. We have focused on small- medium commercial and large residential accounts. The equipment allows 3 guys to work like 6 guys. We are able to do install projects while still having time to hustle and get all the maint done even if it means working late or on Sunday. It's not easy, very tiring but our attention to details is what has set us apart from other companies. We do quality not quantity, and our customers appreciate that and are willing to pay a little more for it. Most of our residential customers pay $120+ per week for mowing alone. Most guys around here just don't have the equipment to do properties that size, they end up spending too much time there to make any money, and when they try to fly through them the customers start to notice sloppy work. I don't know I guess I found myself a nice little nitch in a wealthy community. Honestly the equipment is the key, we get more work done with less people in less time. A clean up that would normally take all day takes us 4 hours and we still have tons of energy because the machines did all the work. Plus we do it better anyway:laughing:.

In HVAC the money is sick but the job sucks, on-call on the holidays, on a roof for hours in the freezing cold, Dealing with customers who are unhappy because they are forced to spend money. With landscaping its a luxury, people plan to a certain extent that it will cost $.

thats pritty cool that you do everything in the buisness - its just like me and my brother, we work 7 days a week with 1 or 2 employess with us- we landscape mon-wed, and do weekly maintanice ( mowing ) on thur-fri , then if we are really backed-up, we will put in the sat/sun , spring/fall cleanups, its not unusally for us to work for 30 or 40 days staright, no breaks - some people are like why dont you guys hire more guys, but i dont see the point in giving all the money to someone else so-that i can just be sitting at home , i dont mind working hard, and making good money...keep it up! you clearly are doing somthing right and then-some-

At the moment we have everything we need for equipment, what I don't have we can rent. As far as a machine goes, my cousin just went to prison for tax fraud/insurance fraud so I will be able to use his CAT 246, but up untill now I have rented a Bobcat T300. The only way to make money now a days is to do everything yourself and use a mechanical advantage, kids now a days don't want to work, and when they do work they're slow and have no passion. Do the math, you will spend just as much on a leaf vac like mine, as you will for a good employee for one year, the employee won't increase your production as much as the machine (even if he doesn't call in sick on you).
The best money I spent was on my leaf vac, not only does it make our cleanups go faster, but we can take Curbside leaf pickup customers. We can make $200+ in less than 15 minutes with 2 guys, and on a good day we've done 8-9 of them. You have the potential to make $8000+ a week during cleanups minus expenses.

I have the same thing, only It cost a lot less. An 8500$ Dump trailer, and a $3,500 dollar truck loader will equal the same thing, but for 12,000$. And you can take the sides off when its not leaf season and haul around equipment or stone, mulch etc. Plus, with 4 foot sides, It holds 20% more. (18-20yrds).

BulldogPS
03-10-2008, 02:29 PM
I could have built one for less too, problem is I don't have a degree in engineering, Air flow is critical. You have to balance your cfm intake and exhaust perfectly or you will waste fuel and not pick up leaves as fast as you are supposed to. The tools alone to calculate airflow are very expensive and require years of training. I have seen many people build their own leaf vacs and try to tell me its better because they saved money. Letting someone engineer and build it for you means faster loading times, less downtime and more profits in the long run. Plus our vac shreds leaves into dime size peices so 20-25 yards of leaves= 10-12 yards in the trailer. I'm all for trying to save $, but you can't be pennywise and dollar foolish, sometimes you have to spend $ to make $. Before I bought this vac we had reached a limit as to how much work we could take on, the bottleneck was how long it took to pick up the leaves with a traditional truckloader and then constantly empty the truck. Now we can barely keep up feeding this hungry beast, and we can do multiple jobs without emptying the hopper which saves time and fuel. I can honestly say it has doubled our production rate and that is how you make money at this. With the extra time that we save we take on curbside pickups which is quick cash money. I know that not everyone can afford the big expensive stuff, but just like anything else in business it is a calculated risk, and as a businessman it is your job to grow your company into these investments. If you have it, sell it, I didn't really need a vac this nasty when I bought it, but having it just one season pushed our profits from good to obcene, now we have the time to take on more jobs. Other landscapers call me when they have lots of leaves to pick up because it costs them too much time and $ using their leaf vacs, it just takes too long to get them offsite. If they raise their price for the clean up they will lose the job to someone else.

or even easier to get around with is to just have it shoot into the back of a dump truck. Truck loaders are the same thing that your trailer is only just the vaccum part. They provide up to 12x1 reduction also. As you can see in the photo of the dump trailer about to unload
BulldogPS

Most people that I've seen with the homemade setup have a sealed box that they spray the leaves into with something weird like heating duct registers as the vents on the box. When they fire the unit up the box looks like it wants to explode causing the vac to work harder.
I wanted to set a unit up just like yours but 3 things changed my mind, 1 is that a skid unit won't fit on the tounge of my dump trailer. 2 is that I don't want to wrestle a bunch of lumber in and out of a trailer every time I want to do something different with it. 3 is that the vac I got has 27 hp and a 12" intake hose which feeds a 20" impeller with teeth. it picks up more stuff faster than any truck loader I've ever seen. Giant-vac does make one too but they use 25 hp Kohler engines, I like the kawasaki better. The giant vac unit was more expensive too.
riverwalklandscaping
03-11-2008, 09:41 AM
Yes, I do think your setup is better for just leaf removal, I was just suggesting an idea for those with less money, who could make two things out of the dump/vac setup.

LOL i love how people come on this site and bust balls all day. yah lets give the 17 year old kid crap because he doesnt have a commercial auto policy. Im 21, I have 3 trucks, and 5 trailers registered over 3k GVW. Ive been in business for just over 3 years now and i JUST got a commercial auto policy. They knew what i was up to the whole time.
