Hands down, Honda. You can beat the quality.

Doesn't the extra 2 hp give an edge to the briggs?

Nope, the honda motor has plenty of power and will outlast the briggs.

How do YOU know?!
The 10.5hp Intek has only been out in the US for 14 months, hardley enough time to establish it's longevity.
Having said that, the 8hp Honda (GX320?) is the unofficial most proven single cylinder, air-cooled 4 stoke engine in the world.
Intek is also a Japanese-built engine marketed and distributed by Briggs and the other Intek's seem to be 1st class.
The Honda is a sure thing and should be your choice if the price is even remotely close.
But I don't think you'd be disappointed w/ the Intek.

The honda is a GX240,I have 2 of them, great engines, but at only 240cc,and 8 hp,the briggs should have an advantage in torque and horspower.I think the Intek is briggs light commercial/premium residential engine, while the GX is honda's full blown commerial engine.

What does intek mean?

It's one of Briggs' line.
They've got:
Briggs & Stratton (Disposable)
Briggs & Stratton I/C (Industrial-Commercial) (Less disposable)
B&S Vanguard (Jap built - very good engines)
B&S Intek (Also Jap built - very good engines)
John says the Intek is a step below the Vanguard, he may be right, but I was told the other way around.

The intek is a huge step below the Vanguard, the Vanguard is top of the line, the intek is the equvelent to the Honda GC engines,residential/light commercial.Vanguard is full blown commercial.

My 8 hp Honda Billy Goat has plenty of power. Very easy starting. Quiet. It's a Honda. What else can you say?

Thanks for the responses.
Stonewall,
I assume if you have the 8 hp honda Billy Goat that means you have the VQ 802 SPH Industrial vac. Do you use it on turf or just hard surfaces? How does it maneuver on turf?

We use that same BillyGoat vaccum to sweep up leaves in smaller parking lots. They do a great job with plenty of suction to spare. Ours has a 8hp Honda which works wonders. Low noise levels, low gas consumption, easy starting, and most of all dependable! Great machine with the Honda engine.
ive heard a lot of god stuff about the honda. but the briggs never let me down.so id say briggs.take care of it and the machine will wear out around it ,while the motor keeps on.
that has been my experience in many yrs of using them.
course i am gungho about maintenance. later now
