View Full Version : Does anyone have a deep lake to pitch my Scag in?

Went out to check air pressure on the Scag today. On top of a poor discharging deck, wheel motors going out, hydro pumps going out...now my FRAME IS CRACKED. Please, does anyone else have trouble with this with their mowers? I seriously think we need to come up with a list of every brand of mower we use and simply post the problem we have is we have one. The manufacturers can read it and we professionals can read it. Maybe this would give a little more incentive for them to put out good products and revise them when they fail. It would also be good for buyers to have factual information before they spend upwards of 10,000 bucks. I don't know about you guys, but that is a chunk to spend on a piece of junk. Man am I tired of this mower. Comments welcome.

I had a big problem with a Kohler 25 on a Walker. I had it fixed over and over and finally I bought a Toro 44" Proline to back me up. Shortly thereafter I traded it in ( dealer had it sold for me) and I bought a new 2000 Walker 26EFI. I have not had one problem with it in over 400 hours.

I know how extremely frustrating it is to have problems with expensive equipment. The best you can do is vent here and write letters and scream at the manufacturer. It doesn't always work but its worth a try.
Good Luck.

JLC...

Any chance your state "Lemon" laws would apply in a situation like this?

Something to look into...

you probably bought a mower the same day i did

i bought a ransome bobcat that had the same problems till i pawned it off to some one else

However the lemon law didn't work on that one it did on 3 ferris W/B's

LOOK into it. call a lawyer Phone calls free repairs cost more than the bill

hope you get the POS fix or find a deep lake and drive it in and maby get some ins out of it (just kidding)

You don't have filled solid tires on that Scag do you? That'd give you all those symptoms.
I just pulled a pair of foam filled 23x8.50x12's off of a used mower I bought. It was like taking an ass kicking to ride that thing. It's no wonder the mower only had a few hours on it. I couldn't believe the weight of those tires. I had to roll one into the bathroom in the house to weigh it. It weighs 90 pounds!
I'd give 'em to anybody who'd come and get 'em.

Had a problem with a Walker JLC. Took 2 1/2 years before I got things sorted out. All I can tell you is good luck and document everything about the mower and who you talk to at the dealer. People have a way of forgetting things.

Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia.

It is 200 feet deep at the Dam. That should take care of your missery.:blob3: :blob1: :blob4:

We have a little pond just east of us called Lake Michigan that is a bit closer. :)

I feel for you since I had a lot of problems with my previous brand. :(

Worst part is that all of the brands I'd like to give a try and most likely purchase don't have local dealers. The dealers are about 45 minutes away, maybe that's not a big deal. I'd love to try the Dixie Chopper, Exmark, especially the Hustler Z's. What to do, what to do.

My dealer isn't that far away, but can take up to 45 minutes to get there. I just go in the spring and get all the filters, belts, ect. I think I will need for the summer.

Go try them all out, then you will know what they are like. All 3 of the ones you listed are good mowers. :)

I had a Scag once. It was a piece of $h**. They let me use a loaner until they got me a new mower to replace it. When that one arrived it cut only marginally better. I promptly got rid of it at a huge loss

Gene, 1999 Scag Turf Tiger. 25 Kohler, 61 Deck.

Dave, that is quite funny, I laughed out loud when I saw that. I'd probably do that myself and then my wife would tell me how stupid I just was. Oh well. Tires aren't foam filled, just normal.

I'm sure nobody would mine if you dropped it in our lake! It's 55 miles long, and 1500 feet deep at the deepest part. Sometimes I wonder if there is intelligent life down there... I really hate to hear about people's mowers going bad. My Groundsmaster is really p*ssing me off right now. I've had to work on it alot and now the stupid belt for the deck is slipping and doesn't work right. The old belt was slipping, no problem, just get another one. Did that and the new one is slipping too. And there is no tensioner, go figure, just some stupid spring loaded pulley hanging there for the tensioner and it works terribly. One more thing goes wrong with that thing it's GONE. I'll buy a walkbehind and save myself some misery.

There just isn't a perfect mower made is there? Some may be better than others but once in a while something is going to break. Go to the dealer and look at how many MTD's and Murrays are there then compare that to what you have. Commercial mowers are used daily by a lot of different people and they still hold up a heck of a lot better than the homeowner junk. I know you get ill when things go wrong with them, like my $670.00 repair bill last week, but the fact is we have to look at the abuse, wear and tear we put on them ................ and in some cases neglect. My bill worked out to be .53 for every hour I put on it over the last 2+ years. Other than the normal repairs and maintenance this is the only major thing that has hapened to this particular mower. The other one has 620 hrs and has had the carb cleaned once. The Scag I own has had one clutch replaced...........cause it fell off...........and 1 head gasket. It was my first commercial mower and I still use it regularly. Sometimes it pays to get the kinks worked out of what you have, once this is done you might have a really good machine. If you trade it off then your starting all over again with something that might be better but could be worse.

Stay away from the Monday mowers and the Friday mowers...........try to buy one that was built in the middle of the week!;)

I didn't think to take the scales outside. I guess I really wanted to roll that big lug thru the house. It was about 10:00 pm and the family were all watching TV. I knew I couldn't get 'em outside to check it out, so I brought it to 'em.
They think i'm a little crazy any way, call me the lawnmower man after the guy in that Pierce Brosnan movie...
They're just kidding me, don't you think?

I will agree, Scags are complete ****.

Back when I was 17 I started a lawn company (quit because cutter was too small, and wanted to goto college). I purchased a brand new, top of the line Scag 48".

It cut like absolute crap, leaving streaks and forcing me to double cut all the time. Also, I had a fair amount of pulley trouble and belt issues. The first year I had it in the shop over 7 times.

Junk..
