Anyone besides Ken and Bill (Dotens) running a specific mower blade grinder for sharpening? or everyone using the grinding wheel?

yeah, i'm making a trip tomorrow to look at one that i was more interested in before.

that wright is at pleasant hill landscaping in candia. it needs probably $1000 in work to be a good machine. paint obviously. the motor was rebuild at about 600 hours...machine has 1300+. but the motor needs to have the carb cleaned or the compression may be low. headgasket (which would explain the black smoke/compression issue) or valve cover gasket leak. both hydros are shot...loose as hell and only does maybe 4mph. 1 of the right front wheel bearings is gone. i'm sure there was a bunch of other stuff but i didn't bother.

do you see any mouse hairs in the fan? a lot of times mice get underneath there and on top of the piston jugs, etc. while stripping the wires. they often die in there and get burnt up (smells bad). i'd be a little leary of the the coil(s)-to-ground wire(s) getting chewed up and grounding out against the motor. ...just something to keep in mind

you don't know how many mice-damaged mowers and snowblowers i worked on..that crap makes me gag thinking about it. something in the insulation the mice like..causes havoc...usually spark problems and/or clogging of the piston fans leading to overheating, blow headgaskets, and possible cam/rod/piston problems.

its never worth taking anyone to small claims. legal fees + lost time= debt. depending on what your contract and the judge says you may not get your money. but if you have a contract and a bill saying the person owes x amount you get a lien on the home for that amount. it may take 20+ years to get your money but you will get it.

im looking more into the small claims court deal. i may go that route its up to 5k anything up to i think 2500 is just infront of a judge more then that it can have a jury pulled in. all legal fees are free for the plaintiff to use. defendant has a choice either guilty or not guilty. if they choose not guilty you can go before the judge. I may send out a bill tommorow saying if its not paid within 10 days a $5 a day late fee will be added and will be taking legal action after that. this guy is loaded and he is screwing me for what most people consider pocket change.

Its the Hustler short cut. This is by far THE WORST mower i have EVER used! The seating/position is ok. Uses typical Hustler steering. You MUST bag with this machine... here's the worst part. It runs a rear deck discharge, problem is its UNDER the machine. This is the biggest headache even with slightly damp grass because it clogs horribly, and it uses a double deck design so once it clogs it needs to dry out because you cant reach into the upper deck area. If you try to mow with only the shoot attached and no bagger it shoots the largest grass clumps you have ever seen even if the grass you are cutting is only 4" long.
Also when i worked for Belknap landscaping they had one and one day a member on another crew tried to use it on a damp banking, lets just say they get NO traction. The guy went flying down the hill and with the mower running sent it right into a pond! It took a few hours to get it out with a truck since the way it landed was vertical and the water was over our heads (insert short joke here:rolleyes:). We could only hook onto the front arms for the wheels. Luckily after tearing it apart and cleaning out the motor it still ran.

At least I could just slide in and out of it!!!

thanks joel, i may give you a call...we'll see how i am in the morning. need to finish up the huge lawn i was doing today with what power i have. that lawn literally shakes you to death due to the poor last-minute soil. thank you salmon falls (blatenly they suck...i've seen and repaired many big properties with former boss). i don't like to badmouth people but they deserve it. i got the engine to run with a coil from a spare (but not good) engine and installed new spark plugs due to one being fowled. cleaned the carb, did some adjustments. runs ok at idle but over half throttle skips, smokes black. will get up to high rpms without an air filter but has no power. haven't done pressure testing lately and i don't own a leakdown tester. muffler literally broke off the header pipe due to the shaking which would help to burn up a valve (or two). i'd rather just buy a new engine and be done with the bs.

there's a nice new v twin in maine, only problem is it's 16hp:hammerhead: the local dealers will be a week ship time.

Tom,

I agree with you and don't bad mouth anyone, but we love Salmon Falls. They have created more work for us by their shoddy irrigation installations. We do a bunch of their repairs, even within the first year's installation. Most of them are new businesses and don't seem to know the first thing about irrigation, but when you educate them about the mistakes that were made, they keep calling us. We'll keep repairing their new work! :dancing:

i remember redoing kennebunk savings (the big one) in york from them because they planting all the bushes in the frost in a nov or dec. they replaced them in the spring, then my old boss took over. 2 days of maintenance on the beds with 3 guys. oh well.

guys, im not hear to defend salmon falls, Heck why should i they are competing against some of the same hydroseed work.

However,

Realize, alot of there jobs are Out of there control. When a big general contractor wants an irrigation install or sod install a few days before snow fall, its either do it , or dont get paid.

I have seeded when it was scheduled to snow just days after. hell last year i had to jump thru ice to get water.

I agree they could do better work, but "some" of the mess ups could be due to that reason alone.

Now as far as there "workers" it ticks me off, there is like 30 of them living at there shop. driving there trucks after hours, i see them every night.

I was looking at the 2002 or newer Dodge 1500's, F250's(99' or newer), F150's (2004 or newer), or Chevy 1500 or 2500. 4x4 is a MUST. If you've got anything let me know. I know it's gonna be tough to find with decent mileage, but if you know of anythig please let me know. Thanks! Also have found some good stuff on CL.

There is a place up here in Tilton called Rusty's towing that has a handfull of those "cheaper" trucks at his place. I do think they are all cash and go prices. I few chevys I saw seemed alright 5,500 bucks for one. Not sure on year or anything, just drove by today.

Yea thanks Jeff---what was wrong with the Poly sander?

The dealer thought the "sending module" was bad last fall...I thought it was the motor. They claimed they fixed it and again I had to shovel the sand out of it...I wasn't impressed, I brought it back they told me that I would have to pay for a new motor if it was that because it was now out of warranty. Long story short, I faught them, told them they didnt fix it the first time so they ended up putting it on under warranty. The motor was bad...the origional motor had a casing of regular steele. The new one is much bigger and the casing is all stainless steele......I know of other people that had the same problem and I'm guessing that fisher knew there was a problem too....

ok i need help guys! i have found several plow contracts levied on the fact that i will be getting a plow truck. now i will be buying a used truck something cheap to use this year to getthe contracts and hopefully find more. but i hav no clue what to charge! i have right now 5 residential drive ways and 4 commercial lots that are small one is 100x100 the other bigger one is like 100x200. i have looked at plow site but it seems like prices are all over the place. and how many of you buy the plow insurance? i know my liability will not cover plowing.

$125-$150/hr. trying to figure out sand/salt pricing (which seems you have to be more on target or you could lose your shirt). i know straight sand use to be around $12/yard and salt is roughly $100/ton but that will vary where you get it. plus if you can't buy in bulk and need to buy sand/salt mix from companies, then expect to pay $60-$120 per yard

residentials:
per inch, per storm, per push, extra for end-of-driveway-cleanup, etc. :dizzy:

i haven't had a chance to call commercials this week but i keep getting pushed by residentials to get a plow. ..they know i wont be cheap. i'm now keeping up on plowsite and a lot of people are complaining of the cheapos this year

2low4NH
08-29-2009, 02:55 PM
yeah i found one lot that is flat rate 1000 for the year that is a res drive and a small commercial lot. thats what they have been averaging for the past 3 years. the other commercial im thinking maybe a flat rate with them as well. i plan on spending around 5 on a truck and then maybe outfitting the 1 ton with a plow as a back up. i also wanna add the full service shoveling snowblowing walks. salting i can buy it in bulk if i can find a place to store it. since i dont have covered storage at my warehouse.

TGM
08-29-2009, 03:02 PM
$1000 for a res and commercial? i don't care if it's a small commercial, they're getting charged for it imo. sounds too way low...previous guy was probably doing it on the side for CHEAP. personally i wouldn't charge under even $100 for the smallest of commercial lots...now times that by say maybe 20 storms and you're at $2k before the residential part. zach would charge a lot more too

sanding/salting sometimes calculates out to more than plowing, especially on bigger commercial lots where you may sand/salt 2:1 compared to plowing.

It really depends if we get snow and or how you charge be it per strom or seasonal. You need to have the right accounts and the right equipment. There is money to be made but its blood money. well right now im looking for either an f350 or dodge 2500-3500 with the cummins. i have been told to go gas and not deisel but i think the deisel may be better for pushing. most of the driveways are pretty small. there is one that i would be able to get but i would have to back drag and not really sure how effective it would be to plow it. im thinking maybe getting a tailgate spreader and keeping a snowblower handy for some drives. maybe build a swing out mount for the spreader. i just need opionions on where to go from here. i dont mind being on 24/7 i dont really vacation and i dont work at all in the winter. im also a FF/EMT-I so i am used to being up at all hours of the night. i just dont want to get in over my head in bills trying to buy another truck and sander paybe a ublade for the bobcat and another plow for my 1 ton

hotshot4819
08-29-2009, 08:52 PM
2low, did you mention you had a bobcat?

There is money in plowing. I have always figured, to have a good mixture of accounts being Season price, and Per Push, Ive liked being 60/40 for the past few years, 60 being set price and 40 per event.. Make sure your pricing is accurate, and youll be fine.

Get insurance, one slip and fall, and your done, they will own you forever.
Not to mention you backing into stuff, your people driving into you.

I went 3 years, with no damages, and then in 2 seconds, last year i put a 4 thousand dollar hole in a building, :dizzy:
If i didnt have insurance that would have been out of my pocket.

Get Insurance for sure--number 1 . If you have commercials you will be asked for it. A $5,000 truck IMO might not make it through the winter, you would need a back up! Trucks take a beating for sure. I have a hand full of customers that pay up front for the season weather I plow 1 time or 50 times.

customers not paying and trucks taking a beating is the reason i stick to making coffee in the winter  and doing a few snow blown yards for side cash like every other home owner who throws a snowblower in the back of their truck. Plus winter property managment makes $ too, nothing like getting paid to check on a house and call someone to do anywork or make any repairs that need to be done when people don't live there.

The headache resides in the fact that if the truck goes down you still have a job to do. People need to be out of their driveway at 6am. Insurance needs to be paid as do all bills includint the truck payment even if it doesn't snow etc....

okay off plow topic for a bit! im buying a new blower for fall clean ups. my blower is just to small. i have a choice between a 10hp walkbehind blower or buying a new redmax 8001 BP blower. which way would you guys go?

KINGSBURYLANDSCAPELLC
08-31-2009, 10:00 PM
Depends on the yards I had. Wheel blower is great for open areas. Although the 8001 is a great blower a 7001 would save u a few bucks and is a good blower. Same with the shindaiwa eb630. Bill and I both use the 630 and I bought mine used 5 years ago on ebay and it runs great and I think bill has had his for over 10 years. I use to just use my 630 and pile the leafs up then plow the pile to where I needed it with the great dane then swept the stragglers up with the 630. Also use a large landscape rake often.
All in all if the areas aren't open then the wheel blower would be my later choice.

both is not a choice right now. i wish i could do both but i cant drain my accounts down much. i have a very high over head on masonry jobs since i dont have credit lines with stores. most of my repair jobs i put up the money for materials. most of the lawns i do are not to large of areas before i was wind rowing and plowing with my W/B but that made it hard to suck them up with the truck loader after. i can get the 8001 for 500 i just wish i knew it was all they claimed. i did get a little 5 hp walk behind blower for free which might be promising. i need to sell my parker vac since i wont use that much at all.

More info please. What size vac

i think its a walk behind vac like a billy goat.

the 8001 is a strong blower. But they say shindaiwas 8520 is stronger (strongest on market is the claim) with 229 mph air speed at the nozzle and 813 cfm air volume at nozzle vs the 8001's rating of 201 mph air speed and 685 cfm air volume IN nozzle.

i have used the 7001 and 8001 and they both are ok. if it meant pinching pennies the 7001 is good (Scott is running one now) and im sure you will still be impressed with the power. the difference between the 7001 and 8001 is not drastic. the difference between my eb630 (same as 7001) and my others halfs redmax 4401 ($300 commercial) is DRASTIC, but its lighter weight for her.

not worried about the weight! i dont have enough customers to have the thing strapped on my back for 40+ hours a week. most of my clean ups i was in and out in 4 hours. figure the bigger blower will cut an hour off my clean up time.

Wheeled blowers are a waste of money on 99% of lawns- IMHO

for a blower you need a big one- the echo 413 is a baby- echo 650 or the 750 are pretty good - I've had mine for MANY years ( the 650s have actually been more reliable then the newer 750's)
But I have started to switch to Stihl 600 blowers..... 5 lbs lighter then the echoes- yet blow the same amount or more.-

20 lbs vs 25 lbs.... 20% weight difference

The 5 lbs less is really nice--- esp when using it/ lifting out of the truck on everyday jobs and when its strapped to your back for 8 hrs
