Its ok Joel... Your secret is safe with me ;) lol

So one of my customers has had a ground hog problem for years and every year we have someone come in and remove them. This year I used "used" cat litter and ever since the ground hog is gone. Also the grass around its burrow is green as hell so apparently its high in nitrogen.
Just figured I'd pass this info along in case its useful to someone.

Recently we were talking about walls that should be engineerd. Here is a wall that collapsed recetly that never had a design by an engineer. As you can see it was temporarily "thrown" back together on the lower part. Proper drainage was never initially added and neither was geo-grid. The wall originally collapsed into the road.

Kings is that right along 11 in Alton Bay?

ya Mark thats the one. The bottom section was thrown back together as well. When t originally collapsed it went right out into rt 11.

I went to look at a drainage job the other day in Weirs Beach in this new "top end" development. The house had only been there a year and they were having TONS of problems! The contractor that did the walkway only used edge restraints on one side and there is more grass growing between the stones than on the lawn. Then they have a 4' double tier wall that didnt get engineered and improperly installed anyways because there are sections that the stone does not overlap and is a straight line down so thats going to collapse as well. Lets not even start on the plantings.......

I will be in laconia a few days this week. Just check over the plant list and let me know your thoughts.

Anyone have a good spurce for lime that's either liquid or fast acting? Got the soil results back from my westford job and it needs 136lbs of lime per 1,000 sq ft and there is over 24,000 sq ft. Being that you should never apply more than 50-60 lbs of lime per 1,000 at a time that's still about 1500lbs of lime I need to apply over all right now. Then I'm top dressing with 2" of loam vs 6" like originaly planned.

and just adding 2" is gonna be fun to.

Loam as you mentioned Joel is more expensive. Also due to the leaves being left on the lawn for 3 years the ph was 5.5 but the organic matter was 10% so its high in compost which is actually more ideal than loam. The 2" overlay of loam will work ideal to get the hydroseed going while the fast acting lime works through the topsoil already there. There is a good layer of soil there now. Also any $ I can save in areas (without cutting corners) I can use to do other things on site this year vs next year.so my plan of attack is aerate the crap out of the exisiting lawn and get the liquid or fast acting lime down on one week, install irrigation, then after a week or two topdress with the loam and then spray seed.

if I did the 6" loam on 24,000 sqft im looking at 444 yards of loam = $8,880 not delivered or laid down

4" we would be looking at 296 yards = $5,920

the 2 " top coat is 148 yards and just shy of $3,000

Ya the duplex is pretty rough. The wall is 2 different shades of stone on each side. That whole area is nothing but bad walls. I just can't remember if the duplex is the wall commercial landscapes out of Dover did or if they did one further down.

Yup in half is the only way to eat a burger on the run. Between both businesses and starbucks I'm on the run usually over 12 hours a day and live off fast food. When the burger is cut in half all the tomatoes and lettuce and stuff doesn't fall out. Also always order your fries without salt, they have to make them fresh since they automatically salt them, then just add the salt packets yourself.

TGM
05-24-2010, 09:09 PM
a bunch of my customers have "spec" houses that are 500k-2million and they still use crap soil (sure, they usually separate the rocks over foot in diamater from the existing "soil", errr dirt). you'd think that a higher end house would actually have a higher quality landscaping.... buuuuuttt nope:rolleyes:

2low4NH
05-24-2010, 09:17 PM
just because they sell for 500k does not mean its a 500k house. I work at alot of 500+ homes doing fireplaces walls etc that are not spec homes that get real lawns with nice soil its not much more expensive but the cheap lawn looks good for the first year long enough to sell the home. cheap contractors fade away quick

Like Kris said most lawns look good the first year. Mainly because they get hydroseeded. The thing about hydroseed is it grows in itself (our trailer usually has grass growing on it) so it looks fine for the first year growing in the 1" of "loam" until the roots die.

theres exmark lines in there too! i did learn with the bagger on it wont stripe. the bagger takes away the stripewhen you make the next pass. i cut my time by 20 minutes on that one lawn by making the switch essentially i saved about 2.5 hours on my accounts. i don't even bag anymore, i used to think i had to, but on occasion i'll just double cut a property if the grass didn't disperse well. i've cut my mowing time in about half using the 52" super surfer compared to my 48" walker... and it stripes badass too.

i meant actual smaller wheels not tires. the whole paristic drag on the drive train from large wheels. Not sure what you have for actual wheels. i was behind a chevy that was all done up the other day he was one of those guys that gives diesels a bad name. rolling coal just for the hell of it kinda deal every light every car we passed he just had to smoke them stacks. decent looking truck but really is there a need to do that?

i used to want stacks for many years (they sound great), but i don't want to go down the road with mulch on fire

jason, nope. there's Alan's Diesel out in lee, but i don't like those guys (they also think that performance diesels are stupid and think the extra fuel will ruin your engine). i do my own work or i'd drive out to www.northeastperformancediesel.com cause ben's one of the few people i trust to work on diesels. or there's a guy up in saco, maine that does good work, i don't know if he works on big trucks though

i don't know what's going on but i'm having a bunch of customers acting weird this year... late payments (of course we all deal with that), canceling a big project with a weird/BS excuse, one who spent $10k with me last year but mowing before i head over (and haven't told me they want to do it themselves). i dunno wtf is going on..

and i'm running out of work except mowing, which looks like i'll be cutting back a couple more now. grrr :wall

is it me:confused:

i'm also seriously considering this time to sell the trailer and get a 6x12 open...trim back the fat. hauling around an enclosed trailer that needs constant maintenance is just another drain on the wallet, especially when i'm only doing mowing. it's nice to have when doing construction though...

I have the opposite problem work wise Tom. Tons of work pouring in (lol no new mowings). Lots of plantings, new lawns etc. Also doing hydroseeding sub work for another landscape company.

Actually I was going to bring up the late payments as well. Last year I did a net 30 and it turned into net 45 by the time the check came or I'd be out 2 months before there was no check at all. How does everyone handle late fees? How much are u charging for late fees and after how long?

well, i do monthly billing for mowing and rarely have a problem. clean ups, etc. are billed immediately after the job is done. ALL invoices are due within 7 days unless it's a funky situation (like one customer: i bill his company so it's 15 days net, but i know i will always get a check from him). i've been thinking about even using "due upon receipt" like i basically do in MMM, but most of my customers have been with me for years and i don't have many problems as it is.

note: i like the idea that procut has for #9 except for the credit card fee's i'd have to deal with. http://www.lawnsite.com/showthread.php?t=280087

ok so here's some of what i've been working on. will post more pics when i load some more

Mulch and plant job. Had to hack down the overgrown Rhododendron and the other area had forsythias that towered over the windows and were causing mold. I replanted the area where the rhododendron was with a hydrangea (tree form) patriot hosta, Astilbe, Dicentra (bleeding heart), and some happy returns daylily (ever blooming). The area where the forsythias were (no before pic) got replaced by 5 mount baker lilac. All plants that were brought in fit the landscape well size wise and when I left you could never tell "new" plants were added. Nice little U35 made stumping out the old plants easy!

Well, I have found that a few special steps have effectively helped stop itch and cure poison ivy within 3 days max.

1. Take a mango and split it open, preferably in half. It has to be juicy, real juicy. Smear the juice for 10 minutes on affected areas.
2. Take a bag of salt, and a bag of sugar; and mix in 1 teaspoon of pepper. This may seem crazy, but it works. Wet the conglomerate down and lather up the areas! Let dry for 1 day.
3. This is a tough step. You've heard that tomato juice baths take care of skunk stench. Well, the same process works for the ivy. Fill the tub with the juice and once again mix in salt. And wham, kiss your ivy goodbye!!!

if done right i like lowered trucks, but mostly i like 2-4" above stock on 4x4's (i hate 14" lifts... that's ******ed). mostly i'm a diesel performance guy.. i like whooping up on unsuspecting cars :cool2:
this is REALLY what i want my pickup to eventually look like with more $$$ plus around 600hp at the wheels:
http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii59/JonNiemeyer/P6260242.jpg

the box truck is an 88 chevy chassis grumman step van 6.2 diesel with now 79k. cost? $900. i've put about $1800 into it fixing it up though (19.5" tires are NOT cheap) and a lot of sweat equity if you will. people are telling me to put twin turbos on it..lol i don't think so on a 6.2 idi. now if it had a 4bt or 6bt cummins you bet i would put some gauges on it, turn the pump up a bit, and put a little bit louder muffler on it.

i wanted it small enough so when i'm in downtown dover or portsmouth i can actually park the damn thing. i can still fit a mower in there albeit tighter than the trailer.

I took a killer pic of my truck today while on site. Hard to make a 2wd diesel look "bad ass"

6.2 diesels don't have the power of my 6.5 turbo, but lacks most of the problems. Luckily guy I got mine from dealt with them all before I got it. I think banks makes a single turbo kit for it though. Like $3k though. Even mine with the turbo only has 180hp

yeah, i could fab up a system using my he341 turbo and a much lower psi wastegate actuator, but it has a turbo 400 tranny behind the engine... dunno if it could hold the extra horsepower once the pump is turned up.

6.5's can be turned up for more power, but a buddy blew his headgaskets pushing 15psi through his. even with lower compression pistons, pump work, injectors.. they only make 300hp at the rear wheels. any newer diesel can make 400-600hp at the rear wheels with just a programmer/laptop:hammerhead:

looks like i'm not gonna be mowing today...

53 will be stamped on either side of the block... they were a bad cast of blocks which will crack and can't really be repaired... except maybe the drill and plug method. you'll find a whole bunch of info on the diesel forums.

2low4NH
06-10-2010, 10:41 PM
1. Brazilian Blocks are cast by a company named "TUPY" and are marked such. They are identified with cast evolution numbers. #53's are TUPY's. #54 and later evolutions were improved to correct the block issues that the 53's had.

Simply, the worry is that the block will crack. These blocks have thinner water jacket walls than other blocks so with coolant cavitation, corrosion, coolant pressure in the block, and torque, they may crack, spilling your coolant. I know from experience that it will not blow up the engine, but you will see that temp gauge rise more often than you'd like.

Apparently I should have done a little more research before I got my truck. I was unaware (as I NEVER have done this to any diesel I have ever driven even for other companies) that the fuel filter on a diesel is a water seperator as well and I need to drain about a quart of water a month out of it. I guess the previous owner didnt know this either as the drain hose was stuck behind the alternator bracket. Maybe this is why he had to replace the injector pump ( I never want to have to do that job).

Anything else I "should" be doing to it?

put about a gallon of regular fuel in every week to help clean the gunk off the lifter pump and injectors! it will also get rid of that annoying diesel sound :)

he likely had to replace the injector pump because of the PMD (pump mount driver). there are relocation kits to keep them cool.

you can run conditioner, 2 stroke oil, etc. my opinion is to just run the thing and change the filters regularly.

Somedays i barely have time to stop and answer my cell nevermind return any calls. Today for example i had a fire call i was tied up at the house fire for 5 hours almost all of my working day. I left 6 lawns uncut where if i had a helper he cold have kept going on the lawns. oh well pipe dreams to my millions i guess
