the bunton is a 17 horse kawi
I would separate if someone wants the machine without the sulky.
Give me a day or two NH and I'll figure out a price if you're interested.

Ken and Scott, I was awaiting a reply from th customer in Andover about something she e-mailed me about. I guess now she wants a written estimate so i will have you guys come take a look then she will choose one from the few she has.
Hope everyone enjoys their memorial day! Sadly i will be out prepping a lawn tomorrow (assuming the rental place is open to get the aerator and thatcher) or doing some mulching at the same place (as long as i can get my hands on the mulch as well). But anyone having a bbq want to save me a plate i'll be right over as soon as i finish the day lol.

Hi Guys,
I've been following the local thread all winter, but kinda lost touch with my computer once the snow melted...
Now that we got all the cleanups done, crisises averted and the customers are happy for a few minutes we're looking at company growth and renewal of the customer base (a couple moved away or passed away, etc.). We seem to be seeing a trend of sorts, and I'm trying to figure out if it is just perception, or real and if so and due to a changing local economy, or just stupid weather: in the last 10+ years we always got calls for new projects/installs in April/May when no one had any time to deal with them. This year there has been a few small new contacts, but no big calls (which we would have had to turn down - but that is not my point). I'm trying to figure out whether folks just aren't spending like they have been, or the summer residents haven't gotten into the swing of the summer season yet.
Have any of you notice a shift like this?
For what it's worth, our perspective is from 12 years in business, 3-4 guys on payroll crew, solid customer base with little turnover, just finally got new(er) trucks with sharp lettering... We always had more work that we knew what to do with; we are busy as ever, but the margin seems to be smaller. Wolfeboro Area.

I think the people that live around the lake yr round are being a little more frugal this yr. Doing small jobs, or even trying things themselfs. The people with the big houses that done live here might tend to do more work , as this is just throw away money for them.
Also with the houseing market the way it is less houses turning over , people might be more inclined to fix up thier house rather than try and sell it. So once people start to look at the budget and what they can afford after thier vacations , more jobs might pop up???

Ya I get a lot of project offers, actually more projects than anything. They seem to range frrom small Allen block walls to lawn installs and plantings. Some projects i get offered take more time than i can allow for or are wanted to be done with a almost impossible deadline.
From what I see there has been no lack of projects or $ being spent. Customers seem a little hesitant to spend the $ however they still end up doing it. I actually spend 3-4 days a week on projects and only 1 day a week mowing so most of the income for my business is coming in through installs.
most of my business is through installs/maintenace so far, though i'd like to have 2-3 days of mowing a week. i'm finding it hard to find mowing customers though.

We got a couple new small mowing accounts, one big mulch/cleanup project and the current customers are running up the "to-do" list with multitudes of minor things, but we're looking to do a handful of decent projects and the first year we have the time AND resources is the first year we don't have random calls out of the blue... Usually this time of year I'm hiding from the phone.
There's a slew of startup LCOs, and I'm seeing a lot of rigs from several towns over lately around here but I haven't even seen anyone in particular advertizing...The bigger guys have name recognition - they don't even seem to bother advertizing except for Community Lawn Care: he's doing "the works".
Seems like we got more attention with our nasty old beater trucks with no company signs (D.O.T. fixed the signs issue last year, and the old trucks finally had to go - there's only so much duct tape can do ;-))
I guess we need to move beyond word of mouth, well lettered trucks, the local weekly paper block ad and the community phone book: I'm thrashing around trying to decide the best form of advertising for our weird local economy. Getting a website up is a must, but along with that, what? We're aiming for the higher-end accounts - trying to get away from the rags that won't spend a red cent on the yard, then whine that it looks awful. Our local paper likes to feature local businesses in the community section, but I can't even think of a "hook" or point to make with one of those...
hmmmmm (brainstorming in progress)....
i agree with lrs. it's hard to break into the high end customers.
it seems it's the $200 jobs that eat the profit out of you.. not enough work for a full days work (maybe you can fit other stuff in), not enough money after giving the estimate, getting supplies, etc...and then those customers don't want anything else. i would really like to get some high end 10-grand-a-year type of customers to make everything seem worth while:rolleyes:

Jason- you need to get some ear muffs- esp for your girl- $50 @ homedepot for the ones with a radio- well worth the money- makes work so much better.
Looks like everyone is busy- We spent the last 2 days trimming/chipping overgrown bushs/trees/wild roses/prickers. Very nice when you have to wear a hoody so you don;t bleed to death form all the thorns- i swear I could have wrung out that sweat shirt.

Ya she has a regular pair without the radio... just never threw them in the truck. I was just saying to Scott today how i need to get back in the habit of wearing ear protection. All i have been working on is a few random projects. I wouldn't say anything to big, yet even something as small as a $2000 project even with a occasional extra hand still turns into a few days.

alright guys i just went over the pricing, for you guys i will take care of you. the Earth Necter which can be used by spraying on the plant itself or by soaking the soil around the plant. now remember you can use the product as a fallow up to maintian the flower as long as possible. i can sell the gallon for $15 however you dilute the product by the fallow 8 ounces earth necter to 1 gallon water. on your diluted gallon you will get plenty of coverage so your 15 dollars goes a good distance. On the compost i can sell it for $10 a bag the bag contains 40 lbs of the finest top quility compost youll ever see, this product is great for planting and can also be used by placing a thin layer over the plant and then water it down into the soil, therefore getting all of the nutreints right down into the plant.
let me know guys i would love to start working with you, if you have any questions with the pricing or product feel free to talk on here on by e-mail at messiershydro@hotmail.com

Hey guys!
Anyone skipping mowing this week ! I just wanted give some guys the option before I put it out on craigslist. I am selling my 6 X 10 Trailer 2 yrs. old, low miles great shape for $700, and I have a box built on it with my debris loader attached. The loader alone $500, with a spare impeller, both all set up for fall cleanups, $1100! The trailer might need a few bulbs but is good to go. I am looking to get an enclosed trailer so something needs to go to make room! PM for details!

Just laid out some loam today for a job Chris (Deeproots Hydroseeding) is spraying for me and I wanted to say he recommended a place for the loam (job was in Concord- not a general area i work) anyways, the place is called K&K Landscape and its on route 4 just outside the Epsom traffic circle (Ken we know you have no idea where that is lol) he can deliver any amount or pickup. It seriously was one of the best grades of loam I have ever dealt with! No rocks, roots, grass, clumps etc, and the best part $17 a yard! Up here even my cost boils down to $28-32 a yard. I had 6 yards delivered for $140. Just figured I would pass it along because i know im always looking for a good place/ cheap place to get my material for jobs.

JASON -NO CHARGE FOR MILES up here in Northfield? Still 17 bucks a yard?
He said he would come deliver it to us wherever needed. I think he said his big truck can handle 10 or 11 yards (need to double check). So to have that many delivered even paying $100 delivery would save trips and at $17 a yard would save overall. Example 12 yards @ $28 is $336 not delivered. 12 yards @ $17 is $204 so even if it cost $100 to deliver you save over $30 and you get it delivered.

Im assuming its regular loam. Not familiar with superloam. It appears to be the same material I generally use for lawn installs. He offers straight compost for $30 a yard and garden for $21 a yard.

Ive had first hand expirience with the Wright stander in the area. When I worked for Belknap landscaping I use to have one. My opinion is they are great for flat areas and sideways on sloped areas (better than my scamper made by the same company. same thing basically just a walk behind model). However they are not that great for going up and down sloped areas. I would say thats my only complaint about them. I prefer a stander over a walk behind with a velky/sulky.

Do you know any specific species of Arborvitaes that don't get to tall? All the ones i looked at originally got to be 12'+
The "Balls" are a great 6-8 ft hedge,,,but will need to be trimmed.
at that point you can shape them any way you want.

$65 for larger jobs- I can get the loam delivered for $14-17
on smaller jobs $90-100 (15yrds or less) I don't charge additional for delivery on the these jobs because usually we can get the f550 onto the site with 2-3 yrds in the dump- we will spread the loam with the dump roughly and then one goes to get more loam and the other spreads, usually the next load is back by the time the other material is spread.
Nothing like $1,500 in less than 4 hrs(8 man hrs)
Don't feel bad about charging/making money -there are to many people that will work just to have work-

You can get a cheaper no name sulky for like 200 new- I've gotten alot of use out of the couple of no name sulkies that I have- I actually like them more than the "velky sulky". I have had to 'rebuild' them with additional washers because the other washers were worn thin- Think about how many miles that is- and they were greased every day!

Not sure if anyone has used these, but they seem tough enough, never used them myself, so I told her to get the biggest one :weightlifter: not thinking she go for it and she said alright. She is going to order up the 17hp commercial one with the kaw engine, electric start. It has a pivoting deck with four speeds. It can also have attachments like snow blade, 6000 watt generator, snow thrower and also a 42" lawn mower. Looks pretty cool. Im going to check on the reconditioned one for her to save money. The hustlers are very nice- Mine are the Super Walk Behinds which they stopped making. I haven't tried the newer models but they are alot shorter which is the one thing that I really don't like about mine. The cut is good and they have been pretty reliable. The problems that I have had with mine have been changed with the newer models. Not having 'pistol grips' are great and much easier on the hands wrist esp. by the end of the day.
Any more ? feel free to ask,

Consider the bull rider sulky for the hustler- while there are some things the 'regular' sulky does better there are also things that make the bullrider so much better- backing up is very easy on the B.R. full speed with ease- makes it very nice if you need to push the grass/leaves(fall) in one direction.
the hustler is a totaly different machine with the sulky as well-(if you demo one with out)
On the bull rider I had a 10 yr old driving around my yard with in 2 mins- never tried any w/b -rider mower before, just 4 wheelers- Anyone can operate the machine with a bull rider- unless you are totally retarted- and even then it will take 15 mins:)

Is the bull rider the "sulke" made by Hustler? I know Hustler makes their own "sulke" but it is nicer and almost acts as a striping kit because it uses like one big "roller"

Is the bull rider the "sulke" made by Hustler? I know Hustler makes their own "sulke" but it is nicer and almost acts as a striping kit because it uses like one big "roller"
Hustler dealers usually have/had the "bull rider" - But I do believe they did come out with there own sulky. "Bull rider" isn't made by hustler. I don't think you really need a striping kit with the hustlers, there give a good stripe with any sulky.

ALAN--do you do any work in that area? Im looking to get some more for next year. I have two right now and I might drop them next year if I dont get any more. Thanks SCOTT
Scott
I have accts in Lincoln,Woodstock,Campton, Thorton and plymouth.
I to have a couple accts toward the lakes region, but the drive time is killing me.
I am not nearly as efficient as I need to be unless I start another crew.(don't want to)
This fall I was hoping to met with you and other companies in your area and tag these folks off.
Looks like I may have picked up a major commercial acct in my town (2 days) .
If that is the case I want to make sure my lake people get good care.

Also just curious as to if anyone would be interested in some sort of get together next month? I know there has been talk but it seems no one is pulling it all together and I figure August is probably a slower and one of the best months to do it. Anyone interested or have any ideas?

Hey Folks
Looking for some local knowledge and opinions.
I know my overhead and feel comfortable bidding Residential and light commercial
properties in the North/Central part of the state.
I was just asked to take over a major condo complex in the Plymouth area
(27 buildings). I am trying to run a 3-4 man crew. I see it as a 2 day 8 hour job.
Cut, trim, blow,,,,they want A+ work
For me there is great value in this since time behind the windshield is killing me.
What would you charge for the 2 days.
I will be subbing out the chemical work and all bed work is an extra.
Thanks for your time
Alan
ps
Was told it was mine if I wanted it,,,,just don't want to gouge a friend

hey Alan, you should braek out actual mow time from trimming and blowing as that should be a different labor rate as a mower costs more to run than anything else. With out seeing it is hard to estimate but if you know your rates for each thing it should be easy to do.
If you get anything down the Meredith area you need to get rid of or need done let me know.
A gettogether would be cool. mabey we could all meet up and not tell Jason about it or give him the wrong day.....LOL HA HA

2 days with 3-4 guys or 2 days with 1 guy? I think it could be 1 day with 2-3 guys? How many acres(roughly)? What size mowers- 60's or 21"? Since you are friends with the guy- ASK what was being payed- but take it at face value-It needs to be worth it to you or you will hate being there as well. REMEMBER the first guy wasn't cutting it so charge more and make DAMN sure you do a better job.
We can do 22 jobs in a day(2 guys)( alittle longer of a day ) yet these are seperate residential jobs which includes a 1 hrs drive each way- Works out to 60-70 per hour /per man including drive time and subtracting fuel as well- $90per hr/man excluding drive

I would do the same way. Ask what the previous person made, up it a bit and gurantee as well make sure the service is beyond their satisfaction. Also Im not far from Plymouth (25 minutes) so if you need a extra hand or mower let me know.

I used a wright stander and couldn't get it to cut well- I tried everything- changed heights/mulching blades/doubles- it just wasn't good:hammerhead: And talk about a PITA to change blades:dizzy:  NO JOKE
Joel
I tried the hustler 48 today and loved it
The controls are very good and much like my motorcycles.
I also like the fact that employees will get comfortable with it faster.
I also liked the sulkie that comes with it, Your basically riding on the stripping
unit. The salesmen made backing it up seam effortless,,,not the same for me.
I can see where the bull rider has it beat on that point. I am also concerned about the hustler sulkie going over pavement and stone. The stripes do look awesome Anything else I should look for.
Thanks for your time

Good to hear Alan- I haven't tried the hustler sulky so I can't comment -yet as time goes by I'm sure backing up won't even make you think twice. My hustlers aren't the most compact machine and I know that the new models are smaller which is nice but the biggest benifit of the hustlers is the ease of use- I went solo for a season and every day my hands would ache at the end of the day- NOT ONCE SINCE I BOUGHT THE HUSTLERS- also anyone can learn to use the mower. It is actually easier for some one who has never ran any mower before than someone who has used pistol grip mower.
