Anybody have any "NEW" info on the Supervisory Registration Certificate. Have been talking to Lisa, this was her last e-mail I received from her.

(Hi Bill,

The seminars have not been scheduled yet, but they should begin this winter, I will let you know as soon as I find out the dates and times. John Deere Landscapes is going to host the first 8 hours of seminars on core and safety, we are not sure who will host the seminars for each category, which is 8 hours each. After attending the necessary seminars applicants must send a resume to the New Hampshire Division of Pesticide with their business id and insurance certificate. Applicants must also pass a written and oral exam given by the NH Div. of Pesticide. Please let me know if you need any other information. Thank you. Lisa)

How all you boys doing? How many customers did ya tell to screw this season?

I was subbed out by a smaller company (Ground Control Landscape Design) Who desided to not pay me after the job the remaining $12,000 ballance for the completed job! he went and bought a new enclosed trailer and all kinds of cat attachments with my money! and every lawyer i have spoken with says that it will cost me just as much as he owes me to collect if i take him to court! crooked system!

:confused:Did you or did you not have some kind of written contract on payments and recorded past payment history. Showing paid, owed, and total? Did your Invoice have (with an all cost for collection paid by customer / company)? With 3% interest after 30 days on unpaid total. We were owed $6,700 with a layer & $500. I was paid in full with interest and layer fees and court fees. I don’t know all your details but I sure would not let it go. Good luck.

Hi Jason, You can register for the classes online at UHN Cooperative Extension. There are 2 sessions scheduled with about 70 spaces in each. The first classes are January 24-26 and the second set are February 14-16. To get the new license you will need to take the core training plus one or both category. After attending the seminars you will need to pass a written and oral exam, and have insurance.

Not familiar with the old system, other than the 5 year requirement -so I have no point of reference, but comparing to college courses and seminars, I found them to be bearable. Some of the speakers that I liked better, the guy near me hated, so I guess no matter what/how it is presented, someone isn't going to be happy... Most interesting to me were the presentations technically least related to the certificate (Shoreland Protection Act updates, for ex.) Yes, a bit disorganized, but not to a point of being counter-productive. A lot of repetition (sprayer calibration 3 days in a row - yawn) but it makes studying easier.

I was told there won't be anymore course series until fall, at least by these guys, because of the time investment on their end, getting speakers, etc ... So the current crop of applicants is it for now. Seems they have 80 or more, which will take a while to get through the orals, at 5 applicants a day average.

Sending in the resume today - dreading the orals: since I have no prior experience (by their yardstick) I suspect they will be out to wring me dry and fail me if they have *any* doubts. Ugggh!

That bothers me - I'm pretty sure someone (from the course staff or state dept) had specifically told us we don't need to know the aerial laws and sections not directly related to our categories...! I was going to do them anyway, but that is false information: no wonder a whole bunch from the first group failed the regs section.

Tell me about it! I think most of those ppl failed due to lack of information. I went to the Tuesday and WED class in the first session and the ROW class in the last. When they were talking about what had been discussed in the prior days i was pissed because none of it was discussed in the first session. My brother took the ROW the first go around and he was pissed at the amount of additional information that was given to us who attended the last session... the state really needed to get their act together and not have it so misorganized due to a "rush" they had been planning it since may. Just sayin

I think the problem is that they really hadn't been planning since May... the rules were changed last May at the State level, but the courses were only really pulled together this winter, when John Deere Landscapes stepped up to sponsor them, and Cooperative Extension put it together. For the summer and most of fall what little I could get was barely more than rumors. An inspector told us about the new certificates back in August - but no-one seemed to know anything more until the NHLA newsletter "feelers" in the fall.
Anyone know how the old style certificates were taught?

I am really glad now, that I waited for the second session, even if it means the orals will be dragged out into late spring.

How did the exam go, if you don't mind my asking?

If your already invested into QB, I seem to recall recently seeing that they now have mobile features, and all those smartphone capacity features too. Didn't look any closer 'cause I don't need that extra stuff at this point, but if you're already setup, it may be less hassle to develop what you already own.

It seemed straightforward enough to me - I forgot my calculator, but the calculations were simple enough to figure out without scratch paper. I'd still recommend taking yours though (had a panicky moment there).
The turf section included stuff like "overwintering form of chinch bugs", "frog-eye pattern suggests which fungus" and a question on "which herbicide does not show effect until the next season". (I remember those, cause I wasn't sure of the answers). If you were in the second (Feb) series of classes, and go over *everything* they gave us you should be fine. The tests I had didn't have too many specific named pesticide questions, or I'd have been in trouble. Label reading is worth 10 questions in both G2 and B - easy points there.
Gotta watch for some weird phrasing - there was a cryptic double-negative in one of them, and they'll toss in some random term in an otherwise textbook description. Making sure your paying attention I guess.

Rumor (one of the other participants from the Feb training run) was told they're the orals are passing 2 out of 3, roughly, so far. I'm definitely nervous as hell about that part.

Not sure about the northern part of the state but I can definitely say that if we don't get some rain, its going to be a brutal green-up and major fire dangers!

Anyone go to the MB Tractor Open house yesterday?
I was going to but it would simply have been window shopping so I decided against it.

I found the silver lining in this ridiculously dry, windy weather today, finally...
In three weeks of cleanups so far we almost burned up the dump truck (leaves caught fire on the tailgate mounted leaf-loader exhaust, and the fire spread into the truck); like many of you I'm sure, spending day after day fighting gusts of wind in no consistent direction (even quitting early twice because there was just no getting anything accomplished); and returning the next day to find that it looks like we did nothing...
Well, the silver lining is that it takes far less time than usual to get the bulk of the cleanups done: we zipped through a thicket of 40-50, twelve foot plus tall rhododendrons and laurels in under an hour, crawling and all... it is usually a 3 hour misery tour. Stuff takes off like a rocket in front of the blowers, and the tarpfulls are light. Saves time on the bulk, so we have more time to mess around with the last 20 leaves that just won 't go away. :p

how are you guys pricing your spring clean-ups that are not under contract? I told a guy today $50.00 an hour for two guys, plus 10 yards of mulch, and needless to say, the phone call i just had with this guy has me beyond pissed off!

OK - this is just ridiculous... We started mowing today - a full month earlier than "normal" - and it was overdue at that.
This year is just nuts. I really don't know what to expect for this summer.
Anyone else way ahead of schedule?

way ahead but also way behind schedule. I start mowing in the morning.
My Masonry world is coliding with my Landscaping world and causing huge scheduling issues for me.

Thats to cheap for me. Then again I am getting under bid on almost everything this year. the only jobs I am actually winning bids on are patios and walkways. At least I can do dry laid stone work so that sets me up for a better price point over some other guys.
