I'm in New Iberia. I just started out this year. I have 9 residential yards and 1 commercial account. I'm really hoping to grow enough to do this full time. I am an outdoor person and my current full time job has me locked up in an office with no windows all day. It is definitely time for me to get back outside.

I work in the Lafayette area. I also currently serve as president of the Louisiana Turfgrass Association. Are any of you members? Our annual meeting is January 15 in Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge. Hope to see some of you there. I will be giving a slide show on football field renovation.

Also, I have a 2006 Exmark with a 56" deck for sale. It has a 27hp Kohler, a mulch kit, and a suspension seat. It has about 250 hours on it and has warranty until August 2008.

I'm in Gonzales 20 min from B.R....been mowing lawns since I was 10, although this is my first year as an official business....looking foreward to it.
I currently own a Quick 36 comm. wb, Snapper 30" rear engine, Husq. trimmer, Homelite sick edger/trimmer/blower, Troy-bilt Blower, 2 Murry 20" wb trim mowers and a 5X12 open trailer. I will mainly focus on 1 acre or less residential...looking for an LCO in the area that I can foreward accounts bigger than 1 acre and in turn can send accounts my way the own smaller lawns that the bigger LCO may not want the hassle of. I will be ready to roll officially 03/01/07......pm me if interested

Big C -

In my experience, you can pay the note on a ztr mower with the monthly pay from one decent commercial account. Start with the first one, get another, and then another, all of a sudden you're making a decent living off of 5 or 6 larger accounts (while still servicing the smaller ones). You might want to think twice before giving away any larger accounts offered your way.

THE LOUISIANA TURFGRASS BULLETIN
Vol. 44 Publication of
No. 6 2007 LOUISIANA TURFGRASS ASSOCIATION

LTA Turf Conference
January 15, 2008 at LSU
We are proud to again offer an educational turfgrass conference for professional turfgrass managers. We hope you think this effort is worthwhile and will show your support by attending if you are able.

This is a convenient one-day conference located at LSU in Baton Rouge. The registration will start at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2008. Get there early so parking will be easier. There will be student around this year as they return to campus the day before the conference. Visitor parking hang tags will be issued at the registration table.

This year’s set up will be a little different. We shall have two breakout sessions in mid morning and then resume a united program starting with lunch. Lunch will also include our business meeting so that we may have a full program and depart a little earlier.
Our kick-off speaker is Dr. Grady Miller from North Carolina State University. Perhaps you recognize Dr. Miller from his regular advice column in Sports Turf Magazine (official STMA publication). Grady shares this column with Dr. Dave Minner.

Dr. Miller is a Professor and Extension Specialist at North Carolina State University. He previously spent over eleven years as a turfgrass faculty at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Grady has a B.S. degree from Louisiana Tech, MS degree in Agronomy from LSU and PhD in soils from Auburn.

Dr. Miller’s topics include a review of frequent turf problems he has seen and advised for; the new Turf Files support program from NC State and fertility research with slow-release fertilizer.

Another turf professor with local experience is Dr. Gregg Munshaw of MS State. Gregg C. Munshaw is an assistant professor in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at Mississippi State University. His teaching responsibilities include Turfgrass Management, Golf Course Operations, and Plant Science. Prior to joining the MSU faculty, he attended the University of Kentucky where he completed his B.S. (1997) and M.S. (2000) in turfgrass science. Gregg’s M.S. research focused on examining seeding rates and N fertility to increase the fitness and storage capabilities of bermudagrass entering the winter. He attended Virginia Tech for his doctoral training, which he completed in 2003. His dissertation looked at the effect that late-season fertility has on bermudagrass lipid unsaturation, proline concentration, and low-temperature tolerance. Gregg’s research interests lie on the biochemical and physiological side of environmentally stressed turfgrasses. Dr. Munshaw will have two morning programs covering conversion of common Bermuda areas to improved bermudagrass and an overview of current seeded Bermudas.

An overview of the turf plots at LSU Burden Center will be presented by Drs. Beasley and Koske.

Our LTA president, Nick Simoneaux, works in the turf and lawncare industry and will present a program discussing his recent successes with renovating and regrassing high school athletic fields. This is just ahead of LSU’s athletic turf manager, Todd Jeansonne. Todd has just regrassed the old, softball park at LSU. A new park is being constructed during 2008.

Danny Taverner is a grad student and turf associate at LSU. He will discuss his target species: Torpedograss. Nick Singh is going to cover the common turfgrass diseases found in our area.

We are holding an LTA business meeting half way through lunch trying to multi task and get everyone out a little earlier.

The afternoon session is back to a united group meeting. We first start with two company updates. Mel Grove with ISK and Bart Fox with Syngenta will overview their latest turfgrass products.

Following this, we will hear the latest on Louisiana‘s fire ant problems. Dr. Linda Hooper-Bui is an Associate Professor in LSU Entomology. If you have turf in Louisiana, you are going to see fire ants sooner or later.

Ray Saseen is a territory manager for the Anderson’s Professional Turf Products group. Ray will be covering the latest technology on slow-release fertilizers. He will talk on the mechanisms, coatings and release of nutrients. They also have a new technology in a granule that disperses after application.

Following Ray is Dr. Grady Miller again to talk about low input fertility of sports fields and fairways, and how well that worked out. His research involved some of those products that Ray will include.

That should provide all with a busy and interesting day for January 15. If you are coming, please try to pre-register to help us plan and to speed registration. As I implied earlier, our only glitch this year will be site parking that will possibly be less convenient than in the past years. However, if you arrive early, around 8:00 a.m. or sooner, you probably won’t notice much. By 8:30 a.m., the West Stadium lot may be full and you must park across the street at Alex Box baseball lots or S. Stadium A 85. Just make sure it’s a legal parking space or they may tow you away and I can’t help you with that. Our planning committee must apologize in advance having set the conference as usually scheduled and not noting that Martin Luther King Day was late this year and they started LSU classes early for 2008.

Most will enjoy the convenience of a one-day conference and come and go on the 15th. For those that wish to stay overnight, several hotels are found at I-10 and Acadian or at College Drive exits. The LaQuinta Inn at Acadian (225-924-9600) has offered rooms to LTA Turf Conference for $70 if you tell them you’re with the LTA Turf and AgCenter Conference. You may also consider LSU’s Lod Cook Hotel on campus (1-866-610-COOK). -Koske-
A campus map is at http://www.lsu.edu/campus/

2008 LTA Turf Conference Registration

Please try to pre-register if possible. Pre-registration will be accepted until January 11, 2008 for $50 per person. Registration will be accepted at the door at a higher rate of $5 more. Conference attendees are encouraged to be current members of the LTA. There is a $5 surcharge for non member attendance. All persons interested in turfgrass and landscape management are welcome. Use also for just dues only.

You need a Horticulture Services license. Contact someone at the La. Dept of Agriculture in Baton Rouge, or go to their web site and you can find the info you need.

You will have to take a test, which you can do in Baton Rouge.

You can spread mulch, pull weeds, and cut grass without any type of horticultural license in LA.
To plant flowers, shrubs, or trees, however, you must be either a licensed horticulturist, landscape contractor, or landscape architect (arborists can plant trees as well).
To trim hedges you must be a licensed horticulturist.
To prune larger trees (I believe over 18' tall?) you must be a licensed arborist.
To apply ANY type of chemicals (other than fertilizer) you must be a licensed chemical applicator.

Hope I was able to answer your questions. Best of luck!

I am new to pricing jobs and want to know how do you guys price mowing jobs (by the amount of time it takes to complete or a flat rate per acre) I live in Gonzales can anyone give me a ball park rate for mowing per acre & labor rates for a solo LCO....any advice would be appreciated

I price mowing jobs based on at least $1/minute/man (so for a solo operator you'd be @ $60/hr). I generally price a maintenance job based on experience (I don't have a scientific formula, per say).
I'd also set a minimum for residential accounts (for example, $30/cut).
We don't mow a ton of grass.. I'm curious to see what some of the more lawncare-oriented operators have to answer on this question....?

It cost me $0.00 to get my LLC documentation.

Go to the Secretary of State's website and they'll walk you through it. (I do think there may be like a $20 or $100 fee on there).

Don't waste your money on a lawyer.

If you have more questions, PM them to me and I'll try and remember as best I can the steps I took for it.

Also, licensing tests are offered occasionally in other cities besides Baton Rouge, but, IMO it's easiest to go to the Ag Center in BR and take them there (they offer several testing times a week).

Horticulturist/Landscape Contract are virtually the same; I believe the only notable difference is that to trim ornamentals you need a horticulturist license, and I believe that a LC license opens you up to subbing out work and such (I think).
These licenses are necessary for doing any planting.

Irrigation Contractor is to do irrigation work.

Arborist is to trim trees.

Chem. Applicator is to apply ANY chemicals (LC/Hort does not license you for any chemical application).

I believe that you're correct on Utility Arborist; it's to trim near electrical lines, etc.

One more thing, I bought a piece of property in Franklinton, cut down a ton of trees and dug a pond for my fill dirt. The local feed & seed store told me to plant Bahaia for erosion control, but is that really the type of grass i want growing in my own yard? She said that is what they use on the levees in N.O. but I'm curious if there is another alternative that will grow fast around here. I have centipede in my current yard, but I have no intentions of sodding 5.5 acres of rural property.

I took two hort. courses at Delgado (Gen. Hort. and Hort. Professionalism) at DCC. I got too busy to continue to attend about 75% of the way through the semester, so did not actually finish either course.

After that, I got the book, read through it once, took and passed the LC and Hort tests.

I'm sure it helped that I had some horticulture experience.

You're helping motivate me; I need to take my irrigation contractor's test (even though about 90% of the guys that do irrigation aren't licensed).

Yeah, i certainly won't be seeding centipede. I already have to bring in a few tons of lime. The property used to be a nursery, but when they listed it for sale they planted it in pines, and it sat like that for about 8 years. The ground is so acidic, weeds aren't even growing in the fresh dirt around the pond. Any recommendations on a good fertilizer that i can buy without a license?

I'm trying to put together another maintenance rig/crew; when I do, if you still have it, I'd be happy to take it off of your hands).

Also, if anyone is interested in a JOB, I'm looking for a maintenance/install foreman with 2+ years experience, STRONG work ethic, bi-lingual a plus.

Pay will be based on experience with bonus incentives. [Opportunity to make $40k+/year]

If interested, please PM me or call Chase @ (504) 275-6617.

I know a guy named mark provost and he wants me to work with him on landscape jobs he needs the extra help on. Oh also I have a Exmark phazer, toro proline with the 2 cycle and a snapper commercial all for sale. Let me know.

Does anyone come across customers looking for someone to spray their gardens or lawns. I have been in business for myself since graduating from LSU in 1990, with a Horticulture degree.
I spray in the New Orleans area, and do work for many landscape companies and grass cutters.
I am an owner/operator, and work by myself.
If you can pass any work my way I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

All I do is spray and fertilize. No planting. No mowing. No clean ups.

So i found out that we are not required to have a license for a "lawn cutting" business, but that limits us to "mowing, blowing, trimming, edging, weeding, etc." according to the La Dept of Agriculture.

There is a pesticide applicators license, and here is what the LDAF says about it. "Certain herbicides and pesticides cannot be sold to the public; they can be sold only to those who have the proper license to purchase them. A person who sprays agricultural chemicals as part of a job in which he receives a salary can use the Private Pesticide Applicator's License to purchase these commercial chemicals. A person in a business where he sprays chemicals for a fee (such as a lawn-care business) will need a Commercial Applicator's License."

Now I'm curious if there is a way to work around the commercial applicator's license using only a private pesticide applicator's license. Any advice?

Doubtful. One of the more major reasons for holding a commercial applicator's license is to avoid problems with the Ag. Dept. I'm going to assume that, if someone from the Ag. Dept. were to approach you while you were spraying chemicals and ask for proof of your licensing, they would not accept the private applicator's license considering that you're spraying commercially.

You would then be slapped with the same fines as the person with no license.

Just do the right thing: learn, study, take the test, and get the commercial app license.

Just my .02..

Yeah, i figured i would be doing that anyway, but it would be nice to offer a full service lawn care business now, as opposed to a couple months from now when i finish my licensing. So, I don't need a license to cut grass, but i need one to fertilize/pest control, and one to plant anything.

This should help everyone with LA licensing questions. Go to my website and click on the link in my about us page. When you click on the type of license it pulls up a list of everyone licensed in the state. And it gives a description of the license at the top. Hope this helps.

I charge 45 for the first acre and 25 for additional acres, then a surcharge if there is much more trimming than just the house/driveway. I live in the country, telling someone its going to cost them $150 to cut their grass is almost as bad as pissing on their doorstep.

As for your big ones, I'm 40 miles + away from Armstrong, so I'd definitely have to charge more then my usual rate.

Scott,

We have a 48" Tiger Cub that we never, ever use on our residential properties. The only real use you'd have for a mower that size would be either commercial or larger residentials (for example properties in Ormond).

I think that the 46" would be a waste if you're cutting mostly in Kenner. In addition, you need to be very careful using a mower that size on residentials in this area because of our low sea level; it seems like the ground is always a bit moist. It's real easy to rut with a larger, heavier mower.

Just my .02...

There you go. Those snapper $450 specials are great. I have one of those and a toro commercial 21" I use a lot. The toro is a big upgrade from snappers. Even though the snapper does have its place. I'm still eyeing that dixon if I'm staying with small lawns. Might end up having the dixon bb and exmark phazer 34s. Krazykajun uses a lazer 46 on his lawns. Check his pic threads and you will see him cutting some small residential with the 46.

I think Kajun is on the W(B)est bank, and properties there are usually a lot larger and a privacy fence around every yard is not nearly as common as it is in Kenner.

If you're dead set on a rider, I wouldn't go bigger than a 36" over there, you'll rarely, if ever, back it off the trailer. If you want to start driving big lawn care equipment, move over to the North Shore. I use a 21" on 1 property and its only for 5% of the total lot because there is a deck around a tiny back yard and I can't drive my Z-trak into it. Otherwise, I'm going full speed on my 48" on everything, and kicking myself in the ass for not getting a 60-72," damn that would make my day easier.

Yeah I was eating next door when it burned to the ground. At least they got the new mowers out of there. I need to go talk to Red as well, but I guess now isn't a good time. I bought a KM-130 from him a month ago, and last week I was staring at it thinking to myself that it looked funny, then I realized it said KM110 on the back of the motor. I should have noticed it right from the get go, but I was so stoked to not be using Lowes crap I didn't pay attention. I guess thats the down side of Stihl products not coming in a box.

Sam,

I lost your phone number, but I wanted to give you a heads up on that client I passed your way. I was continuing to cut her other yard closer to me. She pulled the same thing as she did to you, decided she cannot afford bi-weekly, and wanted me to cut it on call for the same price(which was already low for a bi-weekly.) I told her I could not do that as my schedule stays too full for on call work. She asked if I could find someone else to do it, and I told her I would call you.

Well here is the kicker, she sends her final payment, and shorts me 45 bucks with a note saying "Here is $20, I will remit the balance when the job is completed." During that bad storm we had a couple weeks ago, a pine tree fell from her neighbor's property and littered her yard bad. I picked up all the loose limbs in her yard and moved them to the property line, and cut around the big stuff. She called and asked me why I didn't clean up the pine tree, and demanded that she was paying for a "full service" lawn care(mind you, she agreed to bi-weekly and changed her mind to wanting on-call service). I told her I will pick up stray limbs in her yard, but tree removal service is not included in "Basic lawn care."

So she isn't paying me the remaining balance until I remove a pine tree and re-cut her yard. For 45 bucks, I'm not wasting my time, nor am I going to call her back or ask you to take over the yard.

I just want to give you a heads up, if you are going to cut her yard, or if she asks you to take care of the other property on Garland Street in Covington, you better make her pay up front for service, or find some other work, because she will screw you the first chance she gets.

I might have a small job for you in Abita Springs if you are interested, drop me a PM when you get some time.

Abita Springs here.

I've been cutting some lawns since just before Katrina hit. That was my first summer to attempt the business. I had sold a 21 year business I had one week before Katrina.

My thoughts and intentions were to build the lawn business. I've only three weekly customers and three other 10 to 14 day jobs. Not good at all.

5 customers in Covington, 1 in Abita Springs

Guess I need to either find some of you who are looking for help, or looking to sub out some lawns. All my accounts are 1 acre and more. Spending 1.25 hours per lawn. Total job. Solo.

Is there a PM feature on the site? I'm not seeing it if so.

Thanks Chase! I finally decided on a new truck! debatin on a 2008 Dodge 2500 and a F250. dodge is gunna be the better price.
2008 Ram 2500 Big Horn quad cab 4x4. Diesel. talked down to $29,900 out the door

CALandscapes
07-26-2008, 12:54 AM
Jacob,

I have both; a '06 F-250 and a '08 Dodge 2500. The F-250 is much nicer interior and ride (and the '08's are waaay better than '06) while the Dodge has a lot more power (can't beat that Cummins diesel).

If I were buying a truck for my work and to drive as a personal vehicle, I'd opt for the Ford. However, strictly for work, I'd go for the Dodge.

I bought my Dodge in December for $33,888 + TTL. I flew to Houston for it and got it at a dealership called Helfman Dodge. They have went down, though, with the rising cost of diesel.

What options does the Dodge you're looking at have? The one I bought is 4x4, quad cab, power, satellite radio, etc. I'd suggest you call Helfman before you pull the trigger on one here; even with airfare to Houston I saved about $5k from what any of the dealerships here could offer. I dealt with the fleet manager; I believe his name is Brian.

Let me know how it goes..

We do several in James Park, some sites on the Airport's property, Lexus of New Orleans, and then 20 or so high-end residential.

Commercial is much nicer because you can afford to spend more time with more people on each site. Some of the resi's are pretty high dollar, but, for the most part, are much more of a hassle than the commercial.

I really don't like maintenance at all, but, over the last couple of years I've realized the importance that it plays in the business.

I'm currently in college at LSU (if you couldn't tell by the username heh) and am looking to do this about 20-30 hours a week during the semester and full time 40+ hours a week during the summer. Still looking at what equipment to get and what dealers I should deal with. Mainly on here trying to do a lot of research so I know what I'm doing when I get started.

I'll either be working in Baton Rouge, Hammond, or Covington next year. My dad is in the home building business in Hammond and has offered to help pay for the equipment and help me start out. Im from Monroe, LA. I have about 20 residential yards that I maintain every week. If anybody has a walker for sale around here I would be highly interested! Great to find a couple of people that are actually local.
