Hour meter Question

I just recently purchased a new walk behind and had an hour meter installed. The meter seems to put more hours on than what I actually put on the mower. MY question is, do hour meters go by actual hours or is there some other factor used?

ON some mowers, if the ignition is not in the "off" position, they will click off hours even if the mower isn't running or in use

The type of hour meter you had installed most likely is an inductive type in that it senses when the sparkplug is firing through a wire wrapped around the sparkplug wire. They only record time when the engine is running.
