Anybody use Purolator oil filters on there Kawasaki engines? The local parts store has these filters for $3.49. I'm currently using Wicks at a higher price. If Purolator is quality then this is a good deal for my 3 Kawasaki engines. Anybody have any problems with these filters?

Purolator filters are of the highest quality and are only second to Mobil 1 filters.

Follow this link http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/oil_filter_study/ I think you'll find it enlightening. I use Purolator filters on my gas Kubota and have had zero problems.

I have been using PureOne's for about a year and a half. They will set ya back about $5-6. The nice thing is Purolators site will actually cross part numbers for a lot of small engines on mowers.

I switched to Purolator 3-4 yrs ago and no problems. I get them at strauss auto parts sometimes 2/$5.

I have four mowers with Kawasaki engines and I usually use Castrol MaxPro filters. I've often wondered if it was worth the price just to pay for a Kawasaki filter. I think not.

I think it is wise to run the engine manufacturers filter at least during the warranty period. I saw an engine that was ruined due to oil starvation, the filter fit the engine but the bypass valving was different than the OEM filter. My Kohler rep. told me he would stand behind oil system 100% if I use OEM Kohler filter. The owner of the ruined engine was denyed warranty repairs by Kohler due to that faulty AFTERMARKET filter. He went after the filter manufacturer for repair reinbursement to no avail. Just some food for thought. ED:)

EJK,

There is a Federal lawsuit and ruling (cant remember the name) that states that unless the filters (or any part) is supplied free of charge, there is no recource for this situation. Just use major brand filters and you will be fine. I dump mine every 50 hrs and its as clean as it was pouring it in.

I would have asked the Kohler rep this:

"And the bypass valve has what to do with oil starvation?"

Unless the oil turned to mud and wouldn't pass through the filter element or the filter element itself is clogged the bypass valve shouldn't even allow oil to pass normally.

As long as you stick to the better filters (Purolator Pure 1, Mobil 1 etc.) you will have no problems with oil starvation.

Richard Martin,
If I remember correctly, I think it happened at cold start in the fall, when the oil was too thick to pass through the filter paper & the bypass didn't open. Thus starving the engine for oil.

Dixie 1,
It's called the Magneson/Moss warranty act. The Kohler rep said that it didn't apply to the earlier mentioned engine failure. Do to the fact that it was determined to be a faulty filter and not a Kohler manufacturing defect, so Kohler declined paying the warranty claim. ED

Damn! I have to apologize. The Purolator site doesn't cross small engine filters anymore. They changed it I guess. What Kawasaki engine is it?

The 14hp and the 17 hp ones. I am at work now and can't get to the model numbers.

I am pretty sure they are the FC420V and FC540V. If so, they take the same filter, right? It appears to take a Wix filter #51394 and if that were true, it would take a Purolator L14476 and if available a PureOne PL14476. The problem is, it is calling for the same filter for my FB460. If I recall I used two different Wix filters, the 51394 and the 51348. I believe the 51348 was larger, but either were applicable. The 51348 crosses into the Purolator PL10241, that I use. Hope that didn't get too confusing there.

Double check these #'s with a Purolator book or something. i hope this helps. Basically your Kawi filter should be either:

1) Wix 51394/Purolator L14476 or PureOne PL14476

OR

2) Wix 51348/Purolator L10241 or PureOne PL10241

Like I said, I think only the capacity is different. I am pretty sure mine came with a small filter and I started using and optional larger one. This may not be possible in some applications.

By the way, this is the link I used to find the info on the Wix filter. http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/index2.asp?Section=4&Make=&Model=&SubModel=&Engine=&Year=&TempSection=4

Use the drop down menu to find your engines.

BTW, Interestingly enough, the filter it calls for on the 25 Kohler does not cross into the Purolator # I have used for 2 years

This will usually only occur when the bypass valve is made of nitrile rubber. Nitrile rubber gets stiff in cold weather.

The Purolator filter that is being discussed here uses a metal bypass valve. The regular Purolator filter does use a nitrile anti-drainback valve but even that is removed and a silicone anti-drainback valve is used in the Purolator Pure One filter.

;) I also work at Parts America in the winter so i did some research when i bought ferris's. both have the 540v motor. I use the L22821 filter from purolator cost's me like 2 bucks with my discount and have put over 1700 hours between them without a glitch. the nice thing about that filter is it is not like the little dinky filter that kawi's say you need. You can actually put a wrench on it. hope this helps.
