I had stopped by a business that had not been cut in well over a month and left a door hanger. the owner called and we worked out thedeal. she would pay 60 for cut and blow. i did the front w/ my pusher to get her looking desent i was to come back
and finish. when i got backabout 730pm, there was a yellow truck w/green letters and 2 or 3 guys on velkies cutting thepart i had cut plus the part i had not. the owner called me saying she did not know the guy was coming. turns out the reason he had not cut it till then was he does it AFTER HIS ROUTE! yes indeed,he uses the company truck, crew and equipment. therfore he has to wait until he is in the area AND the boss is not around! i told her i dont want her business. but, should i tell the owner of the yellow truck w/ green letters about his help or not. i dont care about the job,its just the point of this guy having a business a an lco's expense and behind his back.

Hmmm....I would consider tipping off you fellow LCO of his employees indiscretio. Wouldn't you hope someone would let you in on the same thing if your employees were doing same? Heck...might even give you some referrals out of it.
More of a morality issue I guess.
On the other hand maybe his boss knows and doesn't care.

I would want to know if it were my crew and equipment. Big liability issue here plus the added wear and tear and equipment that the LCO is not getting compensated for.

I have to say, I think I would tell him. It could be me, or anyone else on Lawnsite here. He may not be that bad of a guy, and yet he has someone(s) STEALING from him. We just don't want people like that in the business. I know I would want to know. You're not stabbing anyone in the back, but a thief. And even then, it's not really backstabbing. What did THIS guy ever do for you? (Besides take work that was already done away from you.)

Absolutely tell him!
And maybe make an ally in the biz!
Probably a good thing dropping that acct too. Smells fishy...
I dunno. Out here, everything smells fishy! Must be the fish!

I would say please tell me if someone is doing this to me. So I would definitely say to tell this guy that someone is doing it to him. He may one day return the favor.

I would tell him anonomously. Because if the guy finds out you told he may come by where you live and/or park your equipment and do some damage for revenge.

I would absolutely tell him. He'll probably thank you for it profusely. There is a lot of good for you to come out of this. Plus he is STEALING like others said.

TELL HIM!

I agree with charles, tell him, but be aware that the guy is a crook already, and will probably go for revenge. Also, get a good look at him so when he comes to your door asking for a job, you recognize him.

Its the professional thing to do in my mind from one employer to the next.
I would also recommend that he(employer) discuss the possiblity of subbing out to his guys if they are this hungry any extra work that he may be turning away.
Personally if my guys wanted to make some extra cash cutting one or two lawns on the side I would encourage them.
I would just ask that they get their own policy and use their personal vehicle, to avoid liability to our company.
Afterall, we all could use some extra cash now and then. :D

This would piss me off royally if I found my employees doing jobs on the side with my equipment. Tip the yellow truck owner off!

Tell the owner. It's crews like the ones described that screw it up for everybody.

I could care less about some other LCO's issues. They are not my problem.
My question to you kevin is did you have a signed contract to start this job?

I would be a SNICH on this one. There is nothing wrong with letting someone know they are being used, stole from, and the liability they could have. Tell them for sure.

I would call the guy who owns the LCO and ask him if his crew is in the area again, they were just here (date/time), and see if they could give you an estimate on some lawncare work you were thinking about. As an owner, I would want to know, however, if the guys were doing it with my permission, that's a whole different ball game....something to think about.

Does a fat baby fart?
I'd also want to know who's going to cut it next. Somebody would be paying me for the work I had already done as well.
Drop that dime, and do it quick. Let us all know the outcome.
We don't have that colored truck round cheer so I don't know what or who your talking about.

I would tell him. I get along great with the other landscapers in the area, we borrow stuff from each other all the time. If I knew about theis and did not tell them i would start to wonder if he knew something i did not. But for the record i did have three lawns that i did "after hours." I did get ppermision and i did use compny equip. the only deal was that it had to be done all the time because no one driving by would know that he was not the one doing it.

Yes, tell him. I would want to know. Things like this happen in all aspects of business everyday.Too many people want something for nothing.

Thank you for you replies, sorry it took me so long to respond had to go away for a short while. based on your responses i will contact the owner and let him know what is going on . Calvin, you stated that this is none of my business, i must disagree with you. had he not pulled this stunt i would have had 60 bucks, so that makes it my business. as for those who say he may come after me, i would welcome him with open ARMS he would get a door prize he would never forget. STONE, no i did not have a contract . this was a nice old lady and i thought i would help her keep her place looking nice .it really was not for the the money, rather as others have stated, this could be any of us being stolen from by those we trust and for whom we are providing a means to support themselves.

Good, I think I would tell him also...
Not only is he being cheated...
But, should there be an accident or mishap I bet he will be the one everyone goes after.

Why don't you try to talk to the guy and explain him that what he's doing hurts a company real bad, he may be doing it just cause the lady doesn't want to pay the right price for the service, and also maybe that guy has a family to sustent and his boss is paying him $6.00 dls. an hour.

Let us know the outcome. If it were me the guy would not receive a dime in pay and would be in court. Thieves are the reason why some businesses go under.

What are you talking about???????? That is stealing!!!!!
I am thinking about hiring employees. Just the thought that they would be using my truck, equiptment to do side jobs:angry:  I would go to his boss and tell him in a heartbeat!!!!
It makes no difference what the employer is paying him, he agreed to work for the company. If this dude does damage to the house or other houses, the employer would have some trouble to deal with. With these thoughts, I would also like to think someone would inform me of this if my employee was doing it.
I also agree with kutnkru, as long as you know and they have own vecicle and insurance, because of possible libality I would have if they used all the company equiptment.
I worked for a company several years ago and the boss said we could do small side jobs, as long as we informed him of it.

If these guys are stealing the bosses' equiptment there is a good possibility they are turning in the time too! I'd bust them. I don't have any remorse for busting liars or thieves. I used to work for a large commercial company and they used to catch crews every year doing that. The worse part was some of the crews didn't even know that the crew leader was cheating and he was pocketing all the cash and they were all on the company clock! They thought it was company accounts not the crew leader freelancing. How's that for cheap labor?
