does the grass clump on the right side when its down?
WALKER LANDSCAPE
05-26-2008, 06:46 PM
Yes but very little when it is dry you dont want to be right next to the bed or area you dont want grass to fly. There is some that comes out

got a pretty good idea off of another site so i should try to make one this week. I'll put holes in mine though, maybe will help clumping

Not to sound like a poor ass or ghetto, but does anyone get any of their work pants or shorts at the thrift stores? I went and got 2 nice pairs of abercrombie shorts, with the tags and a pair of old navy shorts for 4 dollars. That is a heck of a deal if you ask me:)

I go to the Thrift store for pants sometimes. I wear BDU and ACU ("Army Fatigue") Pants. They're comfortable, have 6 pockets, durable, tie at the bottom, and you can cut them off and make them shorts if you get holes in the knees. They make GREAT shorts.

Chris, I have 2 pair of the BDU shorts too, LOL. They do have a ton of pockets in them. I will sometimes forget which pocket something is in, lol:laugh:

Hey Brock, if you do get that JD 54" let me know. If it has the old crank up style deck that is yellow with a 16-17 hp kawi, I have manuals for that. I would glady send them to you, free, since I have absolutely no use for them. I had an older 48" JD walkbehind

Far as pants, I wear wranglers. They are the best jeans out there, But, sometimes I'll wear my EMT BDU's there are just as durrable as wranglers.
Sydenstricker, Did you see the Zipper BDU's that are long pants that unzip to become shorts? I think they're great for little chilly mornings- to- warm afternoons.

Brock, it was a great mower. I started out with it an was great. Beat the total snot out of it, and dropped it out of the back of my truck 3 times, lol. Didnt bend or break, and cut pretty well. Made me some very, very good money for very cheap. If I remember right, I paid 200 bucks for it back in 1999.
Paradise, I had a pair of shorts similar to that. Lost the bottom part, so they just became shorts. I wear Wrangler and Levi's. Those have help up the longest in this line of work. Carhartt is always very good too!!!!

I only use Standard Issue BDUs (I have Police Blue and Black as well). I don't like the "Zip-Off" ones. They're flimsy and don't tie at the bottom. Tom, I also LOVE Carhart. I have the Artic (Insulated) Bibs, and Artic Coat. I SWEAR BY THEM! Nothing better for working outside in the Fall and Early Spring (Or days like today ;)... man, it was cold). I wear "Standard issue" ECWS (Extreme Cold Weather System) Pants for rain gear. Just the outer shell tho, it's made of Gore-Tex.... Which is nice, because you don't get too hot in the summer when it rains. I buy all of it on E-Bay, and in surplus stores that I find while traveling.

We're moving right along so far this week. We raised the decks from 2.50"-2.75" to 2.75"-3.00" today for the "Dry" summer season (that's where they'll stay till late Oct.). It's nice, there's nothing to trim. :). Just Cut em, edge em, Blow, and go! We didn't work over the Holiday, so we were a day behind..... So far, we're on gaining a lil ground. By Friday we should be all caught up.

It was a bad dad for me today.
First off, i load the trailer and go down the road about a mile to mow. I unloaded the Deere and started mowing the ditch part and i noticed that my left front tire looked weird...Completely flat. Took it home and put air in it and found a hole so i had to go up to the tire place and pay 7 bucks for a kid in my class to fix it which took him a whole 2 mins.
Got rained on when doing a mow job for a friend.
Then went to get gas in the truck, locked the nozle and sat in the truck looking at my phone, next think i hear is the sound of water falling. Nope, just the pump not shutting off automatically and gas pouring down the side of my truck:dizzy: then it didn't spit out a receipt so i went in and they gave me 3 bucks back which it probably didn't even spill that much.
And then also a important text message that took frieken 2 hours for me to receive with alltel.(long story about alltel that pizzed me off on monday too but its long lol)
And to top it all off, my fan in my laptop is taking a crap and is really loud.
Its been a long day!

I wear the military fatigues, a few of them were my dad's from desert storm (the first one, lol) They also double as hunting gear too. I have went to a few surplus stores, but that one in Ashtabula is overpriced, imo. Too bad that little one in Eastlake closed. I have the arctic coat, but wear unlined bibs. I just do the layer method, that way I can always be comfortable. I thought I would be smart and wear shorts today. Come to find out while riding the Z at Hardee's, I was so wrong. Had to run to the truck and put my bibs on. That cold wind blowing off rt.2 right there sucked!!! You cut your lawns that short?? I keep them at 3" till now, then 3.5-4 on some till September. The final cut is at 2"-2.5" I wish I did not have to weedwack, but dont have that luxury. Hopefully next month that will change. When it is nice and hot out, I dont do the rain gear thing. Pending where I am, the shirt comes off and just get soaked, lol. Otherwise I use that rubber style camo rain gear. Sux, but I stay dry, and it is cheap, so I dont feel bad when they get a hole. I just grab the duct tape and they are back to normal:laugh:
Travis, that does sound like a poop day. Time to invest in a plug kit and a little cigarette lighter air compressor. Saves a buttload of time on the job and keeps you in the field.
Brock, always first and foremost the engine. Make sure it isnt seized up. Check the oil, see if it is burnt, feel it with your fingers and make sure it isnt gritty. Check the trans to make sure it is in decent shape and works in all the gears. If it is hydro, check the oil and make sure it isnt burnt, has water in it, etc. Check the belts for breaks, cuts, abrasions, etc. Make sure the spindles arent shot, and the idler pulleys are good. And of course, make sure nothing is bent or broke or rusted out
Travis E

man i'm cutting high then...cutting my smaller lawns at 3.25 because it looks better and thats what i start all my lawns out at. Most of my other are 3.5 but at my house i'm up to 3.75 becuase its so thick.
Tom, i'm going to have him take one from the place for me, he has several of them because he has them at school to fix peoples tires for them.

Well only worked a half a day on Monday so we have to play a little catch up today and on Wednesday. Did 25 today and for Weds we have 27 to do. Then we will be right back on schedule with our routes.
Started out hot today and then the cold front came through and the temps dropped like a rock. We had rain showers most of the day as well and that even made it colder out. I am just glad that the month of May is about done. Once June hits the craziness will slow down a little bit.

I wish that I was a better Mechanic. I ran my truck on the front tank today and it didn't stall at all. I think that my Klutch is on the way out tho. The botton of the shroud that covers the the front side of the Transmission has been rusted away for years (No problem there tho), so I can see right in there. There's a large gear there (I'm assuming that's is where the Clutch is), this is the area where the slave meets the Clutch-Plate. Well, I've been hearing a ticking noise coming from down there, so I crawled under there while it was running. I can see the gear inside spinning..... But it's got a bit if a "Wobble" to it, and makes that ticking noise from there. Also, My Tachometer does a little dance then drops to zero. I've heard that this can also be a hint that the clutch is going bad. I guess I'll just run it till it goes. I've got a bunch of jobs lined up and I need to have my dump. If anyone has any suggestions as to what to look for or has come accross this before please let me know.

:drinkup:Jax, the cover you're missing is called an inspection cover. The gear you see is the flywheel. It is attached to the crankshaft. The clutch is attached to the flywheel. As far as the ticking is concerned, it's hard to say, but I would assume that your flywheel is warped and needs replaced, along with pressure plate, clutch disk and throwout bearing. As long as you're in there, replace the pilot bearing as well.
You should be able to get a parts estimate from Ford, Auto Zone, etc.
Have a party, invite some friends, tell them to bring their tools. LOL :drinkup:

Jax, other than the $$$, it's not that bad. The worst part is getting the tranny down and back in. It's a heavy mother. The last time I did one was in a 1968 Chevy. It was a 4-speed w/creeper 1st gear.

Thanks Chris!!! I thought they looked pretty good myself, lol. Helps change it up a lil from the ole straight lines. Yeah, I agree with Gary. Sounds like the flywheel has a tooth or 2 missing and could be cracked/warped along with the rest of the mess. Run it till it dies I guess. If you arent going to have the mechanic do it, I would be willing to lend a hand. As long as the beer is cold and there!!!! I am pretty good with mechanic work so I think it would be doable.

got a few potential homes that might need some new mulch installed
do i take the old out first?
how thick do i lay it?
if i redo it next year do i take the old out?

Thanks guys. I'm not sure what I'll do with that truck.... Run it till it goes... I guess.
Brock, no need to take out the old mulch. Just clear the bed of weeds, grass, etc. You can turn over the beds (Cultivate them) first. Then cut in your edge... Then Mulch it. Make sure that you get an even base of at least 2" of Mulch all the way around. I charge Hourly for the labor that is involved before-hand (Cleaning the beds out, hedges, cutting in the beds) Then I charge $50 per yard INSTALLED for double-processed hardwood mulch (the Cheap stuff).

I'm good at fixing things that I've fixed before, but this one is way over my head. I just don't have the "Know-How" to pull this one off in my driveway. Maybe if I had a Ford Mechanic looking over my shoulder and telling me what to do.... But short of that.... I don't trust myself. Man, I don't even trust myself to order the CORRECT parts. There's so many variations of this truck.... It sux.

tom i have the 5.4 in my 150 and it will out pull that jerks 8.1 2500 avalanche a 3/4ton is to big for the 5.4 IMO get the the v10 and see what that pulls like

I am not sure what we got overnight Friday into Sat am but I don't think it was enough. Not much water in the bed of the truck that is for sure. But enough to make some puddles on the roadways and lots. I think the wind blew alot of it around.

I heard that about the tornado's. I have a weather radio and the darn thing went off at 1 am with the tornado watch, then at 4 am with a tornado warning for Madison county, then at 4:30 am with a t'storm warning for us. Was a long night that is for sure.

Beleive me, the V10's arent worth getting excited over. I was in/drove F350 SD's FX4's reg cab srw with 16 foot enclosed with a Scag TT and a Scag walkbehind inside and they werent that good either. They were all 03-06 too. The V10 is only .8 liters bigger than my 6.0 V8. Ford is a decent truck, but I think I will stick with something that I can still sit and work on like a normal person and can see where the plugs are. Kevin, I highly doubt your 5.4 is gonna outdo a 8.1 496 with the Ally behind it. Maybe they are neutered in the Avalanche, but the Silverados sure arent. I would be more than happy to show you how the 6.0 can out pull the 5.4 Heck, I can get my buddy's 2500 with a 350 in it and do circles with the 5.4 all day. And yes I can say these things since I have driven each of them, loaded and unloaded all with the same weight and trailer involved!!!!!!

tom i drug 7yrd from chagrin pet to just down the street from beachwood mall and croker park. we had to jobs to do there one day we pulld with my truck 65mph down the freeway 15mpg in my 5.4 trailer was dacing around alittle bit but youll get that with just under 6k on it. then we drug it with the avalanche now that was scary just under 9mpg all the time now you tell me which you would rather drive. dont omit the the fact i have a grass chatcher 2 wheelboros 15 gallons of gas in the bed and 30 some gallons in the truck

Sure you do have a nice truck and the 5.4 prolly has more go go juice in the 150 than the SD's due to it being lighter. An Avalanche is just a glorified Tahoe with a truck bed, trying to resemble the K5 Blazers of the 80's, poorly. A good friend of mine has a 04 Avalanche 2500 with the 8.1 in it. He pulls his travel trailer everywhere, and it weighs roughly 14,000 or so. It handles it like a charm. Of course the 5.4 will get better fuel economy than the 8.1 But that is like comparing apples to oranges. Small block versus big block V8 will always have worse mileage. You dont buy something with a big block V8 for fuel economy, LOL:laugh: Why do you think I have the 6.0 instead of the 8.1?? It is somewhat better on gas. Also your F150 has a 8800 GVWR, which is the same as the old F250's of before so it was meant to pull and carry that kind of weight. Your 150 is more or less a light duty 3/4 ton in 1/2 ton badges
Well, got rained on 3 times today. After the 3rd time I called it quits. Got 6 left off of todays routes to finish on Weds then do the Weds route. But we needed the rain so no complaints here.

YGH, If your buying Sthil Handheld blower, their homeowner ones are lighter and work just fine.
But Like JP said if you need BP go with the BR

Yep the BG85 is a fine blower. My grandpa has one and it has plenty of power to do what he needs it for, which is nothing now, LOL:) But you really wont need a 110 for now. The 90 will perform just fine for you. If you get a stubborn, overgrown edge, just go slower and take your time. As for Echo, I do have a PB620 backpack and it has a ton of power. Cost me like 365 out the door, but that was last year. I wont ever buy another Echo again though as long as I live. This piece of shyt has been in the shop too many times for a new blower. I will be getting a BR600 very soon. Stick with Stihl and be happy!!!!
Kevin, yes I try to keep up on my info, LOL. I would be mad too if I had to ride around in something that smelled like old dirty feet. I dont blame you a bit, lol

thanks for the info tom. the 85 looks and sounds like a nice blower so ill have to make my mind up between that and the br 380. the back pack is deffinitly more comfortable so if the money is there i will look towards that.
i have thought about re sending flyers and stuff for some more lawn acounts and for some leaf cleanups this year to pay for all this stuff.lol
Sydenstricker Landscaping
06-03-2008, 08:23 PM
If there is only a few dollar cost difference between the 380 and the 85, get the backpack and be much happier. Dont forget, since you are buying new, buy stuff you can grow into over the next few years rather than buy crap that will become useless to you in a year or two. Save up and spend the extra $$$. You will be happier and more profitable in the long run
Travis E

Do you have any sign shops in your town? If so go have them make up a yard sign or two. I am having 5 made up, 3 color on white back for 25 bucks each. Just an idea that might work for you since you don't have a truck to letter up.

i might have to check them out. the biggest reason for going with stihl is that there is a good dealer close. if i go with one from lowes im stuck basically taking it to any small engine shop. i figure by keeping all my equipment through the same dealer ill get better support especially when i go to buy a new mower from them.

i might have to check them out. the biggest reason for going with stihl is that there is a good dealer close. if i go with one from lowes im stuck basically taking it to any small engine shop. i figure by keeping all my equipment through the same dealer ill get better support especially when i go to buy a new mower from them.
is it still raining in everybodys neck of the wooks. we got enough rain last night that i wont be able to mow today. we have gotten all most 4.5in in the last 2 days
well brock my dad put 15 years in with toro right after highschool then spent 10 years as a small engine mechanic for the city here. so if i cant fix it from what i have learn and he cant then its junk. but actually my little backpack even cold in the morning full choke couple primes and one pull its running. But then again its my job to keep up on my equipment. stroke stuff is pretty fool proof for the first little bit enless you got lots of carbon
