[QUOTE=kc2006;2510913]I was close to buying 3 acres earlier this week and was gunna do like you guys are saying. Build a big garage (talked with a local place about a 32x60) and the upstairs would be an apartment. Then down the road build a house. The best part, my girlfriend was fine with the plan. we both want to do a log cabin style home in the future.
that sound's like a good deal an acre goes for 35-45 thousand here . but the smell & stuff may not be so nice in the summer

Went and took a closer look at that place today. The lot is about 200-225 wide and at least 700 deep. It's a big rectangle that goes far back. Has woods behind it, cornfield to the right and a house pretty far over to the left, the garge is almost in the middle of the place depth wise and to the left. Perfect lot to put a house up front with a drive around the left, and the way the back is, the last 200 feet have woods to the left and back, it'd be perfect to dump. I'd even do a fence in the front to contain that area.
Joe, where i dump now, it doesn't get stinky. Unless you drive through the stuff, then it smells oh so bad. But if its left alone, i've never had any issues.

hey chevydump03, I mow some lawns in kent but don't think i have ever seen you around. Do you mow lawns at all? Well I'm out, looks the rain might be holding up for a while :-)
chevydump03
09-14-2008, 09:45 AM
Mikey, no, the only lawn I mow is mine. My main business is trucking and skidsteer work. I haul mostly for the home owner wanting topsoil, stone, mulch, etc. I also contract to several yards, delivering their smaller loads (up to 5 ton). Skidsteer work consists of lawn prep and general skidsteer work, also catering to the home owner, although I do sub out to lawn service co.'s.

I got my fertilizer quote today and thought this was interesting as i was calculating it out. Its 14.7 - 16.1 - 15 and 9.65 sulfur. I was looking at getting 2000 pounds bulk. Comparable to 57 bags of 10k sqaure ft. which is 571,428 square ft of material, which is about 13 acres. I thought that was pretty cool. But, at 14 bucks for 10k square ft, its probably going to be cheaper to go to menards and get bags.

Hey guys,
I need a reputable tree service to come in and take down a 60 ft tree for one of my clients. Well the tree split into 3 pieces. Two on the ground and one still standing. The tree was roughly 60 ft tall and the diameter is about 3 feet or so. Easy access as it is by the street. Most of the tree is down. THe house is located in Lakewood on the westside of cleveland. If you take down trees or know anyone PM me and we can set up an appointment to have you come and take a look at it for an estimate. thanks guys.

My neighbor just told me something interesting. He has about 400 acres in michigan and he tells me that people will blow off leaves from lawn and put on drive and then bring in a bailer and bail it like straw.
Hey guys our power finally came on about 10:30 am this morning. About 90 hours without it. Hope all is well with you guys.
At least I have been working my tail off the past few days. Monday we did brush work, Tues through today we cut all of the lawns. Friday is more brush pickup. The line to get in to the dump is 1 to 2 hours wait. A lot of down time that is for sure. One thing for sure this is kinda making up for the slow August. But I can do with out the stress of the waiting game at the dump. Knowing that I could be making more money while I am sitting in the truck.

Well I put the sides on the truck and made a top for it out of a mesh tarp. Bolted the front down and put eyelets on the sideboards for bungee straps. Kinda looks all official now, lol. Lots of leaves comming down. I did my yard yesterday and today it doesnt even look like I touched it. Alot of the trees are changing colors quickly and so are some of the bushes as well. It wont be long now before we are full swing into clean ups. There are a few guys around here running the leaf suckers already too. Kinda crazy to think that it is only 30 more days until my snow contracts are effective (Nov 1st):dizzy:

Kurt, you are going 5 foot from the top of the bed rail, correct? I will have to measure mine and see where it is at right now. My guess is 2.5 feet maybe less? Will check in the am though. Heck it might be 2 but that seems pretty small right now.

I don't fully want to get rid of it. I'd rather keep it and have it as a back up truck. Still runs good and everything, and heck i just put like 2000 in it this year getting it all ready for plowing. So I'll hang on to it probably.
Metz, I called j&w, he told me 600-800 and i almost threw up. I'm just sticking with wood this year and going canvas next year, I still need to find a loader or I'll be tossing the mower bags up in the truck like i did last year. It works, but if I had a loader I'd hire a helper, I can do the back yard with the mower while the other guy uses the blower to do the front and vac it up.
And jp, yea i went 5 foot above the bed. I did 5 foot because if I dont get a loader i need to be able to get up in there and dump the bags, so the bed is 1.5' high which gives me a total of 6.5' so i can stand up. And it only gives me about a 11' total height.

Well JP, if you have 17 more questions, then I have 17 more answers, LOL. Mine are about 3 feet high, just used 2x6"s to make them. I dont really want to go any higher, because it will block my lightbar from being seen from the rear. I park on some main roads and have to use it with cones and hazards so I dont get mowed down. That and it is easier to store these rather than ones that are 5 feet tall. Plus I can take the whole thing apart in 8 minutes by my self.
Leaves are comming down nicely here now. Im thinking that cleanups should be about in full swing by the 15th or so
Tom and Kurt,
My wood sides are 2ft tall giving my 3.5 feet high to stack right now. But that is going to be increasing in the next couple of days. Kicking around an idea of using some metal frame work from a tent canopy to increase the height another 2 or 3 foot. Will get pictures of it when I am doing it. I need to find some 90 degree pieces to make this work though.

I bought my stuff today. 4 foot tall ontop of the 1 foot tall boards on my insert. Painted it all up today to hopefully keep the wood decent. I won't have help to assemble it until monday so it waits till then. The way I'm doing it, undo the tarp (bungees) and 12 screws and it comes off in 3 pieces so I can store it easily and takes maybe 5 or 10 mins to take down.
Trying to work a deal on a leaf loader right now, hopefully he goes for my offer and i get it tomorrow.

Well, nobody has been on since last night. Wow. Was up in Clapper country today. But did not get to see the famous one. lol Going to be a slow week for cutting but I have plenty to do to get ready for leaf season.
Picked up a leaf loader and I need to do a little more work than I was planning but hey live and learn. 13hp billy goat with a honda. My original plan for the truck box is not going to work so I am going to go with the next step by increasing the height with either 1x6's or redoing with a plywood box. What do you guys think I should do? 1x6's or plywood?
JP
kc2006
10-07-2008, 08:53 PM
I say plywood, I couldnt see doing a whole box with 1x6's. Unless your going small which i wouldn't.
I'll post pics in a min of this years box. I've found that particle board will last a good 2-3 years if you paint it (the big thing is the edges, paint them good or they swell). That is if you don't hit anything with it. The one I built yesterday is the lightest yet sturdiest one so far for me. Nice and simple so i can take it down in probably 5 mins.
The other thing, I dont see why people only go a couple feet with a box. I've always gone 5' above bed and i fill it 2-3 times a day, i'd hate to have a smaller one and fill it 6 or more times.

Kurt right now, my panels are made of 1x6's but it is only 2 feet tall. It does alright with brush, but with leaves whole different ballgame there.
I agree, the plywood is the better way to go. You say you got it at 5 foot. I only thinking of using one sheet per side and then the pieces in the front and back. Good idea or not? Can't wait to see your pics.
Thanks,
JP

i'd go 4 foot tall, this way like you said you only have to use one sheet per side. Thats actually what mine is, but i have the 1 foot tall sides already so it worked out just right.
Only reason i used to go 5' is because it would give me a total of 6.5' inside for when i didnt have the dump, so i could get in there and stand up straight while forking the leaves out. I didn't want to be all crunched up while busting butt unloading.
Makes perfect sense to me.
JP
that looks nice kurt. i bought my 18 hp billygoat leafloader yesterday, so next step is to build a box. i've been contemplating building a box or going with the canvas canopy idea. i'm not very crafty and have concerns about building a box, but looking at yours it looks like something i could figue out. better than spending 600-800 for the canopy.
where do you guys mount your leaf loaders? i figure i have 4 options:
1. tailgate- useless, as i will be dumping solo and not gonna take it off 3x a day.
2. hitch- useless, as i need to haul my trailer all day

4. on my rack 'em trailer basket - requires some modifications to the basket.

Mines open in the back because i'm getting in and out. You deffinitly want to close yours up with the loader or you'll have a mess and you won't be able to fill the box up anywhere near full. Another piece of ply and some hinges and your good. I had a gallon of black exterior paint laying around so i used that. I always go for the exterior stuff, it kinda seals it and keeps it from swelling.
On a side note, I just got back from a ride in a friends car. It's an 04 mach 1, mod motor with a procharger on it. Thing is nice, fastest so far is high 9's with plenty more in it, but it's nice because interior is stock appearing, it doesn't sound extreme. Last I heard there was close to 100k in it. Sick.
What I thought about doing was using a whole sheet. Slide it in the back and cut a hole in the middle of it so I can just aim the shoot in the back. That way I can just slide it out and empty the bed.
Exterior paint is what I thought about too. Just wanted to make sure you did not have something better than that.
Thanks,
JP

So is anyone else getting crap from customers about leaf clean up? I keep getting calls from them crying they only want one cleanup or not at all. BUT i bet if i show up in the next two weeks and side discharge, thered be hell to pay for me.
i've had some people complain about the price. still waiting to hear from some others. i did finish my leaf box today, looks good. i'll post some pics after the game. GO BROWNS!

no complaints for cleanups yet, im still busy trying to get my receivables collected. the drought from august screwed my schedule and billing up so much now i have like 3k uncollected still. i want to get that done and now ive got to make over a hundred calls for our plowing customers by the end of the month.
I have one customer that wants me to do it 2 times. She says she will try to keep up with them. I get there today to cut the lawn. She has leaves raked into the street. Funny thing is, where she lives they need to be bagged. The part of the city she lives in does not do curb pick up (leaf loader by city) on leaves. So that means, I will be dealing with heavy wet leaves when I do my first cleanup.

hey fellas- here are some pics of my leaf box. i guess its not really a box, the top and back are a mesh tarp. these pics are taken before i cut a hole in the tarp for the chute. not bad for my first leaf box. we'll see how long the tarp lasts. as for the hole in the tarp for the chute, i cut a hole in some thin plywood and put a 1 foot piece of aluminum tube and attached it to a hinge on the 2X4 in the back, this way it swings when i dump and no leaves get caught on it

Looks real good. Have you used the leaf loader yet?
What size mesh tarp did you get? I am looking for one and am not quite sure How big I should go. I will be doing the same as with putting it over the top and will drape down in the back a little bit.
thanks,
JP
i used the leaf loader a little bit today. works great, only problem i see is that the mesh tarp lets a ton of dust out. not sure of the size of the tarp, i've had it for a long time. bought it at harbor freight for like $30 maybe? its pretty big though
I was worried about that with the mesh tarp. My original plans were to use one. I had my concerns and this just verifies them for me. Might be investing in some more wood for the top. I can cut holes for vents in the sides or the top then. Dang it anyways. One thing with a hard top is that they stuff should stay dry enough to I am able to unload it though.

I got a call today from a lady wanting the leaves and branches removed from the roof of her house. Sorry dont do leaves. But got me thinking about ways to do them. My dad said that too bad we dont have several acres of ground to dump leaves and turn them and sell as compost down the road.
What does a leaf loader like that run? I'm asking cause it looks new?
I got quoted 24 hundred for a 13 hp new billy goat. I think it was a 13 hp that they quoted me on. That is why I went used.

Dang! so 2500 for loader, 4000 for dump trailer(atleast). wow
i prefer the dump insert as opposed to the dump trailer, simply cause i need to haul my mowers and blowers around with me on my trailer.
and the money invested in this is alot up front, but the money to be made in fall is great. aside from my own customer leaf cleanups, i got 2 other small landscape companies that want me to come by and suck up their piles of leaves from their customers. easy money

Today i thought i would try doing leaf cleanups like everyone else. Took the blower and blew them into a pile, raked on tarp and left bundled up in trailer. Sucks lol but works. Starting some plans for next year already, first need a place to just dump the leaves, then make 4' sides for trailer and have a tarp made to fit the bottom of the trailer, go up the front of the trailer, and a hook at the top, when trailer is full, pull from the top and ull the most out. Cheap and simple.

Mine will be easy. Pull the 2 end pieces and then pull the 2 side pieces and I am done. My end pieces will just slide down in behind the joyce hangers I have there. Will get some pics on Sunday to you what I mean.

its cheaper to get a used dump truck then at least it drives its self. i mean i have lookd both ways cause i hate hauling mulch and having to shovel it off the trailer. But its a hard call

i think it depends how your loading them if u tarp all ur leaves then yes a dump trailer that close to the ground means no lifting. But if u have a vac and mowers to carry. then the dump is the way to go. see the place i workd we always has garbage cans then wed put a 10 ft step ladder next to the truck climb up and dump. the last stop of the day we could trap and pull that trap in the enclosed trailer and get it back to the shop dump the trap the unhook the trailer dump the truck and ur good for the next day.

I agree. Long before i ever thought of a dump or could afford one, i used to haul leaves on my trailer. I would have a bunch of tarps. I would load the first tarp , haul it on the trailer and leave it sit. I then would load another tarp and dump them on the first tarp on the trailer. I would fill the tarp again and drag it on top of the other tarp. I kept doing this until i filled the trailer. When i got to the dumpsite i would back in and start pulling off the tarps. I layered the tarps so that unloading would go quik. I watched the weight of the leaves so that if i was solo i could still peel the tarps off. It saved alot of raking or shoveling to get the trailer unloaded.
I have done the trailer thing and loaded into the back of the truck with the tarp and cans. It's stinks to do that. It was time for a loader to make things go easier and to save the back this fall. maybe next year I can get a dump trailer or insert.
Saw a 2008 2500hd with a 7'6 boss on it today for 23,499 on the window. The sticker says 30,000 on the door. Might be making a call on Monday. I want to go by a couple of other dealers and see what they have out too.

6 inch schedule 40 smooth inside even at the cuppler and inside the tarped area we have a 22 degree angle to blow air down so it goes out the vent at the top when we went straight it blew everything to the back and we had debris squeezing out the cracks. we suck up wet leaves and all our grass as we run the walker 90% of the time. Only place this ever cloggs is the vac itself plugs once or twice a season at the 90 degree bend before it hits the pipe.
Trust me I have ran this vac for 4 years all different boxes/tarps and locations this by far is the fastest and easiest to use so far.

Because it never fails, i want to get one more place in, I get the back done and go to start the front and BAM it gets dark out fast. I figured i could run the truck for the 15-30mins it would take to finish the front and use hardly any fuel.
