Well I know there is a thread anyone from Ohio here, but figured why not just start a Ohio Lawn thread, kinda like the Ohio snow thread on plowsite. Be good for general bull sh*ting and what not.

So are we all ready for spring here in Ohio or what??? I am sick of the snow and ready for some spring clean-ups!!!!!

Name registration should only take about a week. You can also go the the secretary of state's website and you can see your name reservation there and print it out. I am not sure as to the service vendor license, as I just did mine as well

Well I finally found it. This was the second time I had heard about an All Ohio Thread and this time I just kept looking for it. Now I found it.

Today was a great day. Got out and passed out some flyers today, not as many as I wanted to but oh well. Those suckers are hard to get stuck in door handles.

Should have had doorhangers friday, but UPS screwed it up and I didnt want to waste such a nice day. Probably going out tomorrow too, but I think I will hit the churches and grocery stores. Think that would be a good idea?

Is it necessary to register your name if you use you last name? Such as Elwer Lawn Care, as I plan on using. When my parents went to get their taxes done the lady told them that as long as you use your last name then you don't have to register it. If it makes a difference...I just have 10 lawns this year.

Got a few questions. First, what is involved with a spring clean-up. Second, how do you charge for mulching and how do you figure out how much mulch you need for a job?

I worked all day prepping my eqipment today. I am ready to go (I think).:hammerhead:

One more thing. While I was passing out flyers this morning, I made a trip by one of my customers and noticed that he had a few trees cut down and a few large branches cut off several other trees. Whom ever did this left the yard a mess with twigs and branches everywhere. My question is would it be ok to send him an estimate for a spring clean-up to remove the mess? (This is why I was wondering what is involved with a spring clean-up). Last year, all I could get out of this customer was just a basic weekly mowing service.
He has some areas that where at one time mulched and planted but he never did anything with them last year. How could I get him to let me do this for him?

Thanks,

Your customer had a pro tree guy come in most of the time they charge extra to clean up. Go offer a clean up for them right away. Spring clean consist of clean out the beds extra leaves and weeding out the beds trimming any bushes or trees pruned.
Then you offer mulching, edging the beds ect.
MULCHING MATH 101
You figure out the feet by walking it off plus how deep your beds are (Come out away from house) Take that number multiply it by how deep the mulch will be ie(2 to 4 inches) and divide it by 27.

Mine is only a 16 footer, wish I had gotten a 20 footer, so I could haul more at one time. They fill up way too fast. I am looking for trimmer racks also, the best deal I have seen is at TSC (tractor supply) at $60 give or take $10. The really good ones are $100 plus!! Let me know where you get the basket thing, they are rather costly also $200-300 for a full width one. You can find them on ebay, but the shipping would kill you, also installing would be hard.
Good luck with the trailer.

I looked online at them and they seem ok. But I cant complain for 60 bucks!! As for the basket thing, I might be having my buddy build me one in his welding shop. I dont know yet.

I am not sure if they are set up to lock, but as it is now, my equipment lays in the bed of my pick up, or on the bed of my trailer, so it wouldn't be any easier to walk off with my stuff. I am sure there would be a way to lock it if you got creative.

Hey guys, Young Pup from plowsite here. What a wonderful day today. Nice, warm and sunny. I even think I got a sunburn on my face. lol Got the mowers, backpacks, and rolling blower fired up today. Need to work on the handheld and try to start the trimmers. Had the trimmers out of sight so I forgot about them All blades are sharp. Still need to do oil changes and general maintenance on them though.

Even went ahead and cleanup up the yard. I have 6 spring cleanups lined up as of right now. Going to do those at the end of the month unless the phone starts ringing for them then I will start asap. Maybe snow flurries on the weekend here.

On my letters that I sent out I had April 2nd as the start date. It all depends on how fast everything turns. I believe last year we did about half of the yards the first week of April and the second week was full bore on everything.

i use quick books pro for invoicing and accounting.
clean up, clean up sticks, leaves debris is the basic clean up you can cut back perennials & grass plants, rake baeds. i walk the property and think about how long it is going to take to get er done

mulching, are you edging? weeding? any removal or bed shaping? i usually go between$80-&110 per yard of colored mulch or bark mulch. i will walk the property and count off how much mulch i'll be using. i am sure some people will measure each bed and come up with the sq ' and do the calculatin depending on the depth of mulch they are using.

hope it helps

Hey guys.

I put out some doorhangers today, think its too early with the weekend coming up? I only put out 100 or so to highend customers.

I made that bid today. I felt very confident with my bid and I feel that they might accept it too. Which then would be my first customer. Excited!

Anybody know where I can look into getting a 12" trailer? Smith trailers and equipment. Anybody ever dealt with them? What price do you think I can figure on paying. I went to a dealer few weeks ago and he said about $1200 I believe.

Smith Trailers is the ONLY way to go in Cincy. The costs have a lot to do with the axle and weight capacity and little to do with the size. Looking at $2000 for a single axle and $4000 for a dual-axle. Dandy dumps are the SH*T, but will run $7000 for a 12,000 lb capacity.

just go hit what you want with advertising if you don't want those types of homes don't go after them.

So far the best earliest line up I have ever had thanks to sending out forms to customer early March to sign up for work through the season.

Spring Clean ups about 10 so far on the list with a few done
Landscape work 20 jobs approx
Currently have 70 +or - weekly mows with a few double cuts
We have various estimates out on hardscape, landsape, mowing

I have tried door hangers last year put 1,000 out got 2 calls 1 job
phone book mailers too much money and no luck either
TV comercial on local cable just get lost with 1,000 other landscapers on their
local papers never worked for us either just price shoppers and late payers
We have growen mostly on referals and keeping our rig lookin good and lettered.

Our goal for now is to max out our mowing crew looking for 40 more high end lawns

then we will start a landscpe hardscape crew full time would like to dabble in decorative masonary small excavation projects

Is the material being hauled in? If so, can the truck get close to the shed or will they have to dump out front and you move it all back to the site? Ok I think I will try this...

Do I own the dingo? Or rent?
-Rent = renter fee + man hour + delivery
-Own= Delivery + Man hour + Show up + Equipment Use Fee
Where is the digout going to go? Dump? Onsite?
-If dump add for removal plus dump fee
-Onsite
How much is the gravel going to cost and how many tons do I need?

Since already stated ground being wet your going to have to use dingo to transfer the gravel from front to back.

Might have missed something there but onto the job.

Job
-Landing
Measure and stake corners; and connect the rectangle with line
Dig out the 30'X20' 5inches deep with dingo and remove all debris and roots.
Lay 2inches of crushed limestone and plate compact to reduce sinking
Lay 3inches of gravel; then use a plate compactor to compact and check level of slab

Ok you are going to rent ALL equipment. You will have to transfer material.
Doing some fill in yard with some of the debris.
The rest will go into the woods.
Your cost are wholesale on everything:
Gravel $8.00 a ton
Delivery fees are $40.00 a load
HOW MUCH ARE YOU GOING TO NEED?

THE BLIND WAL-MART CLERK

A woman goes into Wal-Mart to buy a rod and reel for her grandson's
birthday. She doesn't know which one to get so she just grabs one
and
goes over to the counter. A Wal-Mart associate is standing there
wearing
> dark shades. She says, "Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything
about
> this rod and reel?"
>
> He says, "Ma'am, I'm completely blind; but if you'll drop it on the
> counter, I can tell you everything you need to know about it from
the
> sound it makes.
>
> She doesn't believe him, but drops it on the counter anyway.
>
> He says, "That's a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco
404
> reel and 10-LB. te st line. It's a good all around combination; and
it's
> on sale this week for only $20.00."
>
> She says, "It's amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound
of
> it dropping on the counter. I'll take it!"
>
> As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. "Oh,
that
> sounds like a Master Card," he says.
>
> She bends down to pick it up and accidentally breaks wind. At first
she
> is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind
clerk
> could tell it was she who farted. Being blind, he wouldn't know that
> she was the only person around.
>
> The man rings up the sale and says, "That'll be $34.50 please."
>
> The woman is totally confused by this and asks, "Didn't you tell me
it
> was on sale for $20.00? How did you get $34.50?"
>
> He replies, "Yes, Ma'am. The rod and reel are $20.00, but the Duck
Call
> is $11.00 and the Catfish Bait is $3.50".
