View Full Version : Is driving mbox to mbox hard on the car?

I know I'm asking a lot of q's here, but I'm anxious to do all this right. Is driving from mailbox to mailbox for like an hour or two a day really bad for you car? I'm a really great driver, but know next to nothing about auto mechanics. I have a nice car and don't want to mess it up stopping too much. Of course I don't put it in park, but, it's still slow moving and a lot on the breaks isn't it? Yet it's much faster than walking to each box, especially when the insert boxes are space 2-3 houses apart; cause not everyone has a newspaper or flyer box.

You cannot put flyers in a mialbox or attached to them in any way.

I think your car will survive.
But only drive to the mailboxes that have the newspaper 'box' attached to them. Don't put the flyer directly into the mailbox, but rather the newspaper holder.

Traffic is the only thing to worry about when delivering that way.

how do so many people not realize it's illegal to touch anyones mailbox.

Lol! THanks guys, but what I meant wasn't meaning to put it in the mailbox but in the newspaper/flyer slot of course. I should have worded it differnt.
But does anyone know what this actually does to your cars engine, breaks, ect? I mean if u did this for 2 hours a day ( at like 600 stops ) would that be too many? What would be an ok amount of time to do this without putting serious stress on your vehicle? Or is this only hard on the breaks?

Does every single person have one of these?

7 outta 10 subdivisions down here do... at least the higher end subs.
Every house gets the same mailbox/post with a newspaper box under the mailbox. Makes delivering flyers a snap.

Is this law for real? In Canada there are no such restrictions.

I for one hate so many laws... the govt has us by the b#lls. Too many laws is worse than communism is some ways.

Sorry, just thought I'd vent. :)

Ya isn't that funny? When I read this:

I almost fell out of my chair laughing. No offence or anything but calling the police over a flyer?  :dizzy: :canadaflag:

Cheers

opening someones mailbox is a FEDERAL OFFENCE guys...i know it seems like its no big deal but like it or not thats the law...NATIONWIDE. i dont know about canada but here its definantly illegal. It is considered invasion of privacy. I know i sure wouldnt want someone going thru my mailbox. If they dont have a paper tube then just dont leave a flyer...simple as that. If you put your flyer in a mailbox then they have all your information they need to get your A$$ in trouble if they wanted to...Its just not worth the risk. I passed out about 2500 flyers this year and they were all in paper tubes.

YES! What don't you guys understand it can't be in or on the mailbox OR the post. If you don't believe us call the post office on Monday when they open. There are NO newspaper boxes in this area so all my flyers/doorhangers go on the front door.

I'm sorry to say that your wrong, but i put flyers out on mailboxes all the time as long as you don't go into the mailbox because thats illegal and as long as you don't put them in the mailmans way they usually don't say anything every now and then the postmaster will call you and warn you and as long as you stay away from that area a couple months your fine.

and for the question at hand, yeah going box to box can be pretty ruff on your car but unless your planning on using a beater or doing all day everyday you'll be fine. Just make sure you keep the maintainence up on it.

the law is that the post office owns the inside of the mailbox not the outside. I know there is a statute that clearly states it although i am not sure what it is right off hand i have it wrote down some where as soon as i find it i will post it for everyone
i tape flyers to mailboxes all the time and as i posted earlier you'll be fine as long as you STAY OUT OF THE MAILMANS AWAY, this means no taping to the door or flag.

I am a delivery manager with the Post Office. I stand by my word. If you don't believe me call them.

Would someone please post what the actual verbiage is regarding placing things on the mailbox or post......or a link to the actual law would be even better....

I've read alot of these threads...and even did a little searching last night...but was unable to find hard written proof saying it was illegal to place something on the mailbox post...

Lots of wording about placing something inside the mailbox without postage..but I could not find anything else....

I'm not saying it isn't there...I just couldnt find it....

ENOUGH of the hearsay...

ATVracer...Have you actually read somewhere that this was illegal...or were you just told this information and took it as Gospel...Calling really does not prove anything...

Alot of these new mailboxes are combo units...meaning they have a spot for the mail and a spot just below it for the paper...if the post office owns all of it then the newspaper delivery guys are in deep crap...

But I could definitely see why the post office needs to take this stance...I just want to see it from a legit source in writing....

Thanks

Putting a flier in or on a mailbox is illegal. This is from the USPS website:

"No part of a mail receptacle may be used to deliver any matter not bearing postage, including items or matter placed upon, supported by, attached to, hung from, or inserted into a mail receptacle. Any mailable matter not bearing postage and found as described above is subject to the same postage as would be paid if it were carried by mail." D041 Customer Mail Receptacles - 1.3Use for Mail"

It IS illegal to put anything on the mailbox, however from my experience it really depends on the carrier for that route, as to whether or not they report it. Not many do. The biggest issue they have is if you put them on the flag or jam them in the handle.

It's sort of like speeding, you know it's wrong, it's your call whether you want to do it or not.

A retired rural route mailman told me that he replaced brake pads every three weeks. He had his own postal Jeep and the USPS had allowances for maint.

I never touch anyone's mailbox.

Like was said, many subdivisions have a newspaper box below the mailbox, and that's where I put the flyers. If there's no newspaper box, I put them on the front door step.

The houses are on small lots, and it's stop-n-go quite a bit. The little saturn's brakes were smoking slightly due to all the heat build up from that.

I don't know how bad it hurts your vehicle but it could do your legs and heart nothing but good by just hoofin' it. :)

The Federal law governing this is called "Private Express Statues". What WheelZ51 posted is right on the money.

Wheelz, Thank you for posting that. Also, thanks to ATV for your input. I don't know how some people can go on arguing about something they know nothing about. I don't care WHAT they do...it doesn't make it anymore not illegal. This has been discussed before to great length, as there was someone on here that was related to an actual postmaster that posted this before, as well.

my mailman drives a jeep liberty or a s10 i guess they ordered it with the "mail delivey option" ,lol
seriously dude as long as you put a lead in your foot when your done you should be fine this will help get rid of any excess deposites in your injecotors or catalytic converter. as for your brakes as long as your going slow and not ridding them your fine. If i was to do something like this i would drop down to d1 and just put along but im going to use a mountain bike and go to the front door and hopefully take the time to meet people and give them an on the spot quote with my flyer. understanding your situation and your "shock and awe" mass paper box lawn mower campain dont worry about it just try not to knock off to many mirrors.

To answer the question, yes, it is.

Take it nice and easy, and keep an eye on your gauges, especially the temp.

No doubt, that's what I been doing! Save the car, and build up the body!
