View Full Version : Cub Cadet 2185 PTO problem?

I have a Cub Cadet 2185 with a 18HP Kohler. Yesterday while I was mowing I began to disengage the blades, however the blades didn't shut off. I opened the hood and the PTO switch is working because the PTO clutch was coming on and off the clutch plate, but it's like the clutch won't disengage.
My question is this. Is the PTO clutch bad, or could it be something else causing the PTO not to disengage? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I suspect that if you remove the clutch you will find a bearing that has seized up, has to be the outer bearing.

I spoke with a mechanic the other day, and he was talking about the clutch inside will probably be welded together almost making it unable to come apart. Is there any truth to this statement. I know nothing about PTO clutches.
Any more advise would be great.

Never seen one weld it's self together, All bearing failures causing them to lock up as stated above.

Ok thanks for the info guy's. However, will I have to buy a whole new PTO clutch or will I have to just buy the bearing that has failed? That is what the guy is trying to get me to do. A new PTO is around 300 dollars. I am trying to get out as least as possible.

Sorry, gotta buy the whole clutch. Almost impossible to get the bearings out of those. They're manufactured so they are not supposed to come apart. At least that style of clutch.

Hey thanks guys for all the help. Yes it does appear that I am goning to have to bite the bullet and buy a whole PTO clutch. I guess now the hunt starts to find a clutch. Again thanks a lot.
