I was wounder if yours is at shops or did it out of your garage. Are the enclosed trailers good or bad maybe for security but what about accesiblity.I was storing mine in a shop until I sold it in December,I plan to build a 40x60 morton type this summer. One guy in town leaves everything in his yard and just about blocks the street w/ all of his junk, out of 4 trucks he has two are presentable and his trailers, he uses cups for his dust caps if they come off.Would just like to know where your equipment is at.
----------
T.J. My new Lazer Z is in driveway with a tarp over it. Snowed on it today. Everything else is on unfinished additon(happens to have roof but no walls). At least I live on a secluded 5 acres in woods so no one can see. Wish I had a shop. But just moved here in October. So the driveway will have to do for now.

If your a small company, and you don't have a shop, I rented a one car garage at an apartment complex. Very stupid now that I look back on it. It was barely big enough, but I was able to back my trailer, leaving equipment on it, into the garage, and all my misc. equipment I didn't carry on the trailer everyday squeezed in the back. The way I see it now, I would probobly be better off buying an enclosed trailer. (the difference in trailer price is made up from the savings of garage rent. You still need somewhere to park the trailer though. Where I lived, all the old italian nags would have called the cops if it was parked in the street or driveway more than an hour or so, and I lived on a sucluded dead end. I'm jealous of you guys that live out in "the woods" because of this. Has anyone lloked into those "instant garage" things, basically a metal frame and a tarp material? The look pretty nice, but you need to build a floor or everything will sit on the ground. I'm babelling now so I'm going to sleep!
----------
"guido"
David M. Famiglietti

Guido,
You ought to see my "shop" :) Just moved here in October. Living in wife's uncle's trailer in woods, he had started an addition looks like a deck right now. Anyways I have my rollaway tool box on the deck, my torch, air compressor, chop saw, you name it it's out on the "deck" "addition" whatever you want to call it. I really miss my shop back home on my farm in North Dakota. We have discussed building a shop here, I wouldn't be paying for it. My wife's uncle would be. He's the landlord and a gearhead like myself. His reasoning would be to increase the value of the property. I really hope he decides to, but even if he does probably won't do me much good. The area I hope to service in the lawn care business is 40 miles away and I plan to move there within the next year. So for now, I'll be laying on my back in the driveway to work on stuff. :)

we live near downtown, where lots of 'opportunist theives' lurk.So when an opening came up, I got into a lock-n-store it. There's basically only one in town that has room for a comm. trailer. 13' x 30' foot with entry door on one end, & garage door at other for $100 a month. Not bad, but would rather put that towards a better garage.
It wasn't until I had it locked up that stuff got stolen, but pretty sure it was someone I know.
Kept stuff at the house for the first few yrs., but had to move on when 20 ft. trailer wouldn't hardly fit up the shared driveway (ugh).
this will do for now.
----------
Smitty ô¿ô
At one point we have tryed it all. Down part here its to expensive to have a nice shop. Plus the towns are real picky. We have stored in the you store it units. Out side and had 2 10x20 inside units. Had outside storage and rented a overseas container. Rented a old barn with added on shop in back of it plus had parking space for up to 20 trucks plus an area for mulch and soil. That was the best spot we have had. The other guy who rented the rest of the land decided to buy the land and build a new set up for himself. IT IS NICE. Now we have outside and a trailer and a shed we work out of. Hopefull soon a freind will buy the land and put up a building. Then we will have about 1500 sf. of inside space. But the price for that little space would cost me $ 1800 a month. We paid $ 600 for the barn set up. O yea I forgot 1 we rented out a old horse stable and walking range. It was always cold wet and muddy but it was cheap.

I must be lucky, started out with a 10x20 garage with a basement under it, then a 20x20 garage, now the house we bought has a 16x24 garage with 9 foot door so I can store my plow in the back and back the trailer in at night. Town and assessor dont care if they dont see it.
A friend has his equipment in an abandoned oil storage tank, they cut a hole in the side and put in an overhead door, only problem is its hard to heat with that 100 foot ceiling! There are 16 other abandoned tanks available to rent, central connecticut right on the river if anyones interested.
Bill

I own a condominium apartment and my partner rents in an apartment building. So, we store our equipment at a local U-Store. We've got 3 10'x20' garages and that costs us $465/month. This season we'll need another so we'll be up over $600/month. Storage is expensive here. Someday I'll be in a house and we'll build a large storage shed for everything but that's years away. Covered trailers would be nice but there's still nowhere for us to park them.
----------
Dave in S.Ontario
I guess rent is HIGH, I can rent a 10x30 for $75.00 a month. But i can't get my 20' trailer in them because the doors are too small and i know my new 24' gooseneck thats should be in Friday will for sure not fit. I even know a guy in town that has built 2 new 30x50 10'tall shops he rents for $200.00 a month, both of course are full, he plans to build more and I'm on the list.
----------
T.J. If all goes well I will be moving in a few weeks to a house with 2450 sq ft, on over an acre of flat land, screened in back porch overlooking a pasture, only neighbors are 1/2 mile down road, and heres the best part, it already has a 40 x 60 shop right in the back yard!!!!! We have been looking and looking here lately and were finally blessed with this house.. The couple wants to sell the whole shootin' match for 85 but will rent it for now for $500.00 a month. We too live in town right now and the trailer stays under the carport. I feel like I'm being watched everytime I drag everything off to work on it, even change blades. Don't want to make too much noise! Oh well, our prayers have finally been answered and with any luck we'll be on our way out soon. No neighbors watching over me will be great.
Homer

Hey Homer where are you at??? A 2500 sq. ft. house on a acre for $ 85000? Or rent it for $ 500.00 dam. One you cant buy a acre lot for 85000 in this area. Or even rent a house for close to $ 500 per month. Looks like most of the guys here have it lucky. Rent seems to be cheap for most of you guys. A friend has just signed the papers on a deal for 2 1/2 acres with a 40x50 shop for $ 450000 hopefully we will be able to build on to the building to give us a set up in back of his. Only problem is the village is starting problems with him already. They dont want a landscaper in this area. The property was a JUNK yard for last 25 years but a landscaper will bring down the area so they say. See what happens.

Alabama the beautiful!!!!!!!!! I have heard the horror stories of high prices around the country..................We may live in redneck land but hey, when you got it flaunt it!!!!
On a more serious note, I really don't know how some of you guys make it in your locations. The land around here sells for 25-3500 an acre, houses average 90-130,000 for a nice, new 3br 2 bath on a 1/2 acre lot. The going rate for mowing is roughly the same as everywhere else in the country, plus we get to mow year round......no snow! It gets hotter than h---e double eck in the summer though, and stays hot into the fall, but that just helps out the bottom line and the ability to market your year round plans.
We're not in the house yet but when we get the word I'll let you know. I'm just excited knowing there is an enclosed shop with a slab already there!!!!!YIPEE I'll get to sit on the back porch and look at cows, and them bitches could care less what you do in your back yard!!!!!!!!!!!!
Homer

Here is an idea. Do you mow any commercial places that you could swap maintenance for rent? I mow a industrial/commercial/office park and swap the maintenance fee for rent. We have about 1500 square feet with elec. and water for the equivalent of 7 months of $190 a month mowing. Has worked well for us.

Just read one of the posts about 5 back. $75 for a 10 x 30????? You should be kissing the concrete floor of that storage unit! I pay $195 for that same unit EVERY MONTH! I would have 2 if they were only $75 each. Instead I will continue to stack all my crap up to the ceiling and only buy fertilizer on the day that I apply it.

I to am blessed. I have a 30x20 garage that I rent for 100 per month. I installed 10 windows last week for the owner and now have 13 months free rent. There is also another 30x30 area of this shop and I use that side when mine gets full. I can leave the trailer and extra trucks there also if i need to. Plus the guy has hundreds of yards of loom at my beck and call for 10 a yard screened. He has a 10 wheeler to deliver with, and gives me all the 3-4 yrd deliveries.
I was lucky today. I found a 10X20 for $57 per month. I can do landscape work for them in trade. The have already bid out the mowing, but the owner was paging the guy he has in charge to find all this out. I'm used to having to light a fire under someone to get any response at all.
Anyway, I'm sure they will keep me busy for a while and I'm more than happy to build up any credit against an already reasonable storage rate.
I forgot to mention, when the place closes at 8:30, shortly thereafter a guy for hire comes and releases trained dogs. No problem with security with K-9.
John

If so, I have to wait until 6:30 am the next day or bring the rig home and store it at a friend's place. Hopefully I won't need to do that, but I can if need be.
Also, theft is my number one concern. Equipment of all kinds seems to disappear really quick in my area.
John
Its funny how 200 mile makes a big diff. in prices. Iam about 200 miles from retro I just called a local you store it place need some space for winter tools and plows salters. I have one for personal stuff about 30 minutes from where Iam at and it costs about $ 160 a month for a 10 by 20. The last one I had we had cost about $ 200 a month. Prices I got ranged from $ 200 to 260 per month. Most you store its around here will offer you 1 spot inside but most want you to cut all of them with in a 80 mile range. We bid last 2 years on Public storage they send a packet with properties in areas that I would not send my worst eneimes. When we send the bid back in with out those they always call and say we need bids for all or none. So we bid those at a price so high that if we get it it will pay for the extra insurance to work thier. But same thing every year prices to high for thses 4 or 6 properties if you lower them you can have the deal. Every year same story no thanks. 1 other guy I know does Shur gaurds he has like 4 for year round and each year they tell him he has to bid on a whole lot of other ones way out in no mans land. He doesnot he loss the bid BUT the manager always get pissed with company that won the total bid so they fire them for that area and he gets the same ones back. Bin like that for 4 yeas now that yets old real quick.

Wow, that seems pretty high. I guess there are more people, less space. I'm sure it would be a little cheaper out in the burbs, just like everything else. Those prices are high, though. I'd bet the only others paying that would be in metropolitan areas as well.
John
