Are you talking at the end of a contract period? Then generally I just send them a letter stating I will not be renewing their contract at it's end. Always be nice though, as you may not know how burning one bridge can ignite another one down the road.:)

a swift kick to the shin works too! But really just say something to the effect of in the course of reviewing my business this winter we are no longer going to be able to provide you with our services.

i have dropped a few in the past that were to far out of my way. I sent a letter and tried to catch them in person. I also called a few other guys in the area to try to replace myself. Really only took a few minutes, and the customer appreciates it. You will also build some good will with the other contractors, even if they don't get the lawn.

Dear Customer,

I can no longer offer lawn services to you because:

The voices in my head said not to
Grass is a living thing - I dont have the heart to cut anymore
It takes away from my beach time
If you were a few blocks closer it would be a different story
My probation officer has a problem with it
I lost the keys to my truck
I'm on the witness protection program - need to stay out of sight.
Couldnt stand to see your husband by the pool in a speedo anymore
