Nice looking machine ! With the tall lift towers at the rear ,kind of reminds you of a fighter jet and check out the cockpit.
Should make the dirt fly.Have fun and good luck.

I have about 20 hours on a 5640 as of this week. I've been working at my parent's new house doing some landscaping and the builder that built the house rented us his 5640 for basically nothing. Parent's new house is 160 miles from where my parents live and about 50 miles from my college location, so on my days off I've been working for my old man. He brought over our mini ex, but not our skid steer. Big mistake, long story short we ended up renting the 5640. I really liked the machine, my dad didn't like it, but I did. Their machine had the hand controls where you twist to control steering and bucket controls, not too different from pilots but I can imagine that machine with pilots would be so much more accurate. After about 5-6 hours I was getting pretty good with the Gehl hand controls, but I'm still not as smooth or accurate as I am with pilots. Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but you'll love the machine, I'd buy one in a minute. They're incredibly beefy, we were lifting 2700 pound pallets of pavers no sweat, love the lift capacity and that super burly 82 horses.

You were lifting 2,700 pound pallets? With forks? (insert bug-eyed smiley face)

That's what I was told the pallets weighed, they were pretty heavy.

Tiger, just went to Gehl's website and apparently the machine I was running had the additional counterweight. I wasn't sure looking at the machine if the weight was standard or not, but I've found out it is. The pallets we were lifting were easily 2500 pounds and we could get them 2 feet off the ground, maybe could have gone higher but I didn't try.

The 5640 the counter weight is optional but all the dealers I have talked to include them. This machine will lift over 3,000lbs without breaking a sweat. Will lift sod pallets, and stone pallets, tetsted it out when I demoed it and is one of the reasons I chose it.

That is a sharp looking machine. When I went to the Farm Show in KY I looked at all the brands of skids/CTL's out there and in my opinion Gehl made one of the toughest looking machines there. I would own one.

Thanks, Gehl defintely makes their machines to work. Very beefy and I look forward to many years of putting it through it's paces. They even said this is not a machine you baby, no break it period.

Nice machine, neuswede. I came very close to buying that machine, I really liked it. I see alot of them around, most of the asphalt paving companies around here use them. Good luck with it.

I ended up going with a Cat. It was just a deal I couldn't pass. It was a leftover 2003 model with the steel tracks and cab and heat. Only a few more $ than the Gehl, so I went with it.

Just wanted to show off my newest addition to the company. Have a few jobs lined up for her, just waiting for the frost to get out of the ground. I ordered it with the pilots and counterweight.

Nice, I know you got the power tach right? How do you like that? Also did you get a radio? I didn't get one with mine but after using it the other night sweeping for 3 hours I wish I had got it.
Now I know who to ask if I have any problems and need a second opinion.

I love the power tach, I know it will be a time saver. I didn't get the radio, we need to be aware at all times of our surroundings. My foreman wouldn't use it anyway. The sad thing about it is I won't even be the one using the machine. My place is on the excavator.

nice machine,
why you donīt get the bigger tires ? 14-17.5 ?
it increase the traction better, but there are also expensiver
we add a counter-wight kit too, it cost much, but is a good spent money
do you also get the 2 speed ?
have you try the joystick steering ? - maybe I will get a new 5640 with joystick steering, because we had now about 2000 Hours in 2 years on it, without troubles, only problem was 1 driving engine was broken in warranty time,
but we move with this unit lot of material,
you can handle about 300m3 per day !
we often dig basements with a Liebherr 900 with a 1m3 bucket and use the Gehl to move the material away instead a big loader, and it works fine !

The wheel and tires are perfect, If I went bigger it would be more of a pain working on tar surfaces. I am going to buy over the tire tracks this summer. The joysticks are the best, I have ran joysticks in the past and foot and hand controls and I like the joysticks so much better. I did get the 2 speed mainly for it to work in the snow and for sweeping so once I fill the hopper I can get back to the truck faster.

I am still around and have had it about a year I have 180 hours on it. I have the pilot control and 2 speed. I went with just heat don't really need the AC. Great machine it is the best saved a bunch of money. I have over the wheel rubber padded tracks and it works great.
No complaints about the machine, very comfortable cab and the view out of it is great. Not much I can't see.
Only complaint is I wish the hydros were a bit faster with rolling the bucket. Seem a bit slow but it has great break out force.

No cup holder in those spartan like cabs. Get the extended warranty. There have been problems with the power-tach. I know, I own a 5640 Turbo type unit with all the bells and whistles with a VTS track system to boot.

So what are you doing drinking a coffee while working? Cup holders suck, I have them on my excavators and all they do is spill crap everywhere. What problems are you encountering with the power-tach?

Are these gehl SS still really touchy? I remember 3 years ago while operating them they were very touchy, quite annoying when doing work next to something you don't want hit.

Too much coffee can be a bad thing! Yes they are still touchy, it took me a while to get used to that.

lordy lordy.......give me "touchy" any day if that's what you want to call it. It's all about feel no matter what machine you are on, the lighter the touch the better for me......you get used to it........cup holders are awesome, except you have to have one of those mugs with a lid on it or you end up wearing instead of drinking. power tach is in an exposed area and takes some abuse - after awhile one side will power down all the way while the other will not. you have to lift the bucket and tilt the bucket and the weak side will seat in. mine is going in for warranty repair for that little item.....will know further when they diagnose/fix it.....

As for the power tach, mine does that too but after a quick spray of 10w40 its good to go.

I bought a 4300 international instead, I went used and saved about 25k, should have it in 3 weeks, just waiting for the box to be installed. We backed out of the Kenworth for a couple of reasons, most notably payload, then service which turns out has a tarnished reputation in this city. I hear they have since changed most of their employees but I wasn't willing to take any chances.
