View Full Version : Kohler oil filter cross ref.

Does anyone know some numbers of some oil filters for Kohler 25 motors? I have the Kohler # of 205-2005, and would like to know the ref. # for AC Delco and/or Fram. I would prefer the larger (longer) filter. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I believe Frahm ph3614 also works, that might be the long version.

Here's what I have, these are Advance Auto Parts storebrand filters:

AA3614 - Kohler 15hp Command and Pro (notice it's the same last as Frahm ph3614)
AA4967 - Kawasaki 25hp V-twin 4-cycler (dunno for sure, but would Frahm ph4967 work?)
AA16 - All or most Dodge 318 and 360 cid engines, and yes ph16 works but aa's cheaper lol.

Don't think this applies here, but I'll throw it in:
AA2870A - All or most classic series bmw 325i's (perhaps e's), that is the square model, mid-80's to early 90's.

Nice red filters, with that grippy surface.

The best way to do it, this is how I do things, is if you're a regular (well known) customer at some parts store, simply take the old filter with you and go where they're located and start comparing. You might can do it at most any store, but I prefer not to be a complete stranger just in case somebody starts asking questions, as a rule you'll have to pull 3-4 filters off the shelf, maybe more or less, depends. Please do make sure you do this one filter at a time, and leave things neat and orderly as you found them lol.

A visual comparison of the seal diameter is good, for me so far visual for the thread (coarse vs. fine) has been ok for that, but the diameter of the thread I usually use physical comparison (actually, I stick one of my larger fingers slowly down in it and remember where it stops, then do it to the next one and see if it's the same size hole, by the way don't get your finger caught lol).

Takes a bit of doing the first time around, once you've found the right one do make sure to keep the flap from the box with the part number OR write it down someplace before you forget, this is a once-done forever smart procedure if done correctly.

I guess actually going to the filter mfgr. website and looking up a filter isn't the best way?:laugh:

Has an excellent cross ref function. It may not give you the exact specs of their competitors filters, but you can get other details such as gasket dia., thread size & pitch, filter height & dia. They also give you the NAPA Gold number by subtracting the leading "5". from the Wix number.

20mmx1.5 (.787" x .059")
3/4"x16 (.750"x.0625")
13/16x16" (.8125"x.0625")

I wouldn't trust my accuracy with the "finger test", when I can simply look up the info. If I'm a "well known customer at a store, I'd expect them to be willing to look up info in their book.

Don't care, I run synthetic oil and do what I want, basically.
For the most part I change it when it starts to turn color, whether that's at 3000 miles or once a year, when it starts to turn color.
The filter becomes a formality at that point, I replace it mostly because it has to be replaced, if the engine has one.
My 10hp Briggs doesn't, neither does my 5hp Honda, and the 8hp Kohler doesn't either.
But the 15hp Kohlers and the 25hp Kawasakis do.
