Please help. I refuse to take it back to my dealer. It runs and cuts great for about 15 minutes or so and then just quits and won't crank back up. It can sit there for several hours and then crank and do the same thing all over again. I just replaced the fuel pump and it was serviced at the end of last season. What could it be? Thanks.

Sounds like a coil problem. Post model #s ,engine ID #'s . Does it have spark when it shuts down ? And welcome to LAWNSITE !

It won't crank or it won't start?

After it quits, it will turn over but won't start. It is a model 2135. Don't have the engine numbers but it is a 12.5 hp Kohler.

My 149 would do that.
No spark.
Filed the points and reset gap.... no problem since.

Kohler has online info even for the classic engines.

I'm leaning toward the coil also. Have you tried loosening the fuel cap when it does that? Might be a bad tank ven????

Thanks for the replies. It does not get spark trying to restart after it quits but after it sits up a while, it does get spark and cranks right up. Does this mean it's definitely the coil? Or could it be some other ignition problem?

if it has points--could be just a bad condensor--if its electronic--could be bad elec box--if its magneto--as others said--coil---

Engine numbers:
Model CH12.5S
Spec #: 1920
Serial #: 2334504114

Thanks again for the replies. Don't mind ordering a coil if I'm confident that's what it is. How do I check?

Assuming you have a 12.5 Command disconnect the white wire at the ignition module. If you still have no spark you've got either a bad flywheel or a bad ignition module. Since a bad flywheel is unlikely I would lean toward the module. Simply check the flywheel magnet. If you do replace the module be careful how you install it. You can put that module on upside down and if you do it won't fire.

Command engines all have electronic ignition. The only two 12.5 HP engines Kohler made are the Command 12.5 (horizontal or vertical, early 90s) or the K331, horizontal, old engine that is rare.

Replace the ignition module, Kohler part 12 584 04-S
