Truth be told, I dont know much about Kohler.

But I just made a deal on a bobcat WB belt driven... 12.5 hp kohler, and the motor is fire engine red...so are the hubs of the wheels. Says it has 400 hrs of residential use...he mowed 1.5 acres with it...and now got a 48 which he showed me

What year did bobcat stop doing this (red motor, wheels)? Old guy claims its 7 yrs old

Ive never seen a red kohler engine, but then again i dont pay attention....

Now that I am thinking about it...the belts seemed really skinny...does that mean its a bobcat classic...ie homeowner edition? If so...how do they hold up? Im looking at using it about 10 hrs/week

I think they stopped the red thing more than seven years ago...I'd be careful, I smell snake oil on that seven year old thing.:gunsfirin ;)

Replacement Kohlor's are usually black, I have bought a few crate motors straight from the factory. On NEW machines Kohlors painted them any color that was asked. Money talks!!!Have a 1961 Kohlor in an IH garden tractor that was yellow in color. Still the same motor--- still in use. Starts and runs every time needed. Old K-seres Kohlors wer the BEST of the old engines around and Kohlor STILL supports them!!!!

At the time I started shopping for commercial mowers in 1997, the Kohler engines I saw were black. I do remember seeing some of those green/red bobcats/ransomes in the used mower sections, and they looked old as dirt even by the late nineties. There was one in particular I saw in 1998 that had an 18hp Kohler, one of the red ones, that was missing a starter or something like that, and when I asked how much they wanted for the machine, the guy said, "Its not for sale. The engine needs a part, but since its so old, we don't know if we can even get the part to fix it." 400 hours... does it have an hour meter?

EDIT: I had literature specifically on the 1997 model year Ransomes walk-behind mowers and the Kohler engines on those were definitely black.

I agree that something smells fishy, I have a Troybilt tiller made either late 80's / early 90's and that's the latest red Kohler I know of, my '98 proline had a black 15hp one before I swapped it... Yeah, I think 20 odd years, you could call Kohler and ask, but it sure isn't 7, I don't think they made red ones in 2000 unless the guy paid to have a red one?

Could've been he repainted the whole machine, kinda what I suspect but now there's no telling for sure and if you don't know, better off safe than sorry.
