Husky riding mower blowing gas into breather

I have a Husky Riding mower and it had trouble starting. After several cranks I noticed gas was dripping from the Breather. I removed the breather and cranked it again, this time it started right up but gas/(and something darker than gas) came blowing out of a rubber hose that is connected to the engine. WHat possible could be wrong? ANy help would be appreciated.

what could be possible is you let it sit up with gas in it, poured new gas in and it leaked all by the carburetor into the crankcase, mixed/diluted your oil and is no blowing out of the crankcase vent.
